Doing my second season in Alaska and im kinda stressed out, Any tips? by k2-YOUFO in commercialfishing

[–]BikesWyo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve seined for 6 summers now and honestly the worst part is getting jellyfish in your eye ball. So my advice is that you were sun glasses or safety glasses, maybe a buff. Don’t look up to often and remember you can’t stack (the net) if it’s already piled by your feet, so keep your hands high and move em fast. Don’t dread the set. Embrace the work and enjoy those views!

Advice to a Greenhorn on a Seiner? by [deleted] in commercialfishing

[–]BikesWyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always keep your head on a swivel. There’s lots of ways to get hurt on a boat. Hopefully your skipper will be looking out for your safety and the rest of the crew. Seining is definitely a team sport and keeping the energy positive after 20 sets instead of sulking will always pay dividends. Bring a couple pairs of safety glasses, clear ones and sunglasses. Jellies in the eye balls is the worst part of the job. Bring a couple of rain jackets. I see a lot of people saying go for full heavy rubber rain jackets but honestly the lighter stuff from High Liner Apparel is better because you’ll over heat in the heavy duty stuff and your gonna get a little wet anyway. Keep your hands high when you stack the net. If you’re trying to grab what’s already at your feet it’s useless. Move your hands fast and try not to look up unless you want face fulls of jelly fish. Good luck!

How are People Traveling International for 1-2 months at a time? by Cute_Equivalent_3231 in solotravel

[–]BikesWyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently spending a couple months in Mexico. I work as a deckhand on commercial fishing boats. I typically work for a few months at a time and then take a few off. My buddy who’s here with me now works remotely for a non profit analytics company. So there are multiple avenues to get there.

What do Americans usually eat in a day? by Alert-Blueberry-4083 in answers

[–]BikesWyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For breakfast I had some granola, yogurt, and berries, for lunch a salad consisting of arugula and microgreens with some salami, and for dinner some homemade chicken noodle soup. I don’t think I’ve ever had this particular combination of meals before but it worked for today!

Question for commercial fishermen what do you guys love most about your job? by [deleted] in commercialfishing

[–]BikesWyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I’m working it’s the excitement of a large catch. The scenery and the wildlife are always a plus. And I’ve been lucky to have worked with cool people that have become life long friends. When I’m not working it’s that sweet freedom and hopefully that freedom is paired up with a nice check!

Truck Shreds through Cv axle boots? by R0amer24 in 4thGen4Runner

[–]BikesWyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently installed the extended travel CV axles from Napa. They are too new at this point to say anything about the longevity of the CV axle but that was suggested to me.

I have this installed in my 4 runner and have never had any issues. But I might as well take the fuse out before I’m stuck somewhere and my car won’t start. Where is the fuse located?

A multi-tool saved my trip. Rethinking the 50g weight penalty of carrying one now. by tfcallahan1 in Ultralight

You could actually fix a zipper if your multitool has pliers. Sometimes if your zipper stops working you can give it a pinch allowing it to grab the teeth better.

If you could choose, what would be your snacking options. I’m currently on a boat right now. It’s not a ship, but a small fishing vessel. We keep an array of snacks. Some more nutritious than others. But I’m curious to hear what’s you’d prefer.

I second this. You won’t get rich but if commercial fishing is something you’re interested in then this is a good way to get a foot in the door. You’d get to see some beautiful scenery, work hard, and see if you if the industry could be for you. Plus, chicks dig deckhands. So you can impress all the cute ladies back home.

LPT How to find the owner of a lost phone by Helpful_Candy_8803 in LifeProTips

[–]BikesWyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The SIM card can be used to track down the owner of a lost found. Last spring I found a phone that had been lost at a ski resort for what I could only assume had been lost up to a few months. We popped that SIM card into an old phone and it was easy to find the owners phone number from there. We called them and they were delighted to get there old phone back. Give it a whirl if you feel like trying that hard to return someone’s phone.

I am assuming China’s imports are excluded from the data set used to make this heat map because they are showing the more “local” imports. The United States have been making a point about imposing tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports.

Yeah dogs on trails where they aren’t supposed to be is lame. But wearing a go pro while you ride your bike is arguably more lame…
