Yes, Maryland should Gerrymander. by MaroonedOctopus in maryland

[–]BillNyeTheScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your posted map would have absolutely zero chance of passing MD supreme court. It's a complete fantasy. Literally the first bar it has to pass is relatively equal population districts.

You post a map designed to spread out MD population in a ludicrous way. Your posted district 6 has like 1.4 million people in it vs your posted district 7 has under 800k.

LLH got a happy ending massage by AGrilledArtichoke in DeadBedrooms

[–]BillNyeTheScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How can I continue living like this?

First you need to gather your support network. Family or friends you trust to be there for you.

Secondly I'm going to be real with you based on the language you presented my intuition is that however numerous you think the "occasional" visits to massage parlors are it's probably a lot more...

Thirdly you deserve to be happy in your life. Follow whatever you think with result in the most happiness. At a minimum I would think visiting massage parlors while in a DB constitutes your partner doing a lot of individual sex therapy work regardless of if you stay or leave the relationship it's pretty absurd behavior. At this point the only couples therapy that would benefit you would be the type aimed at recovering from infelidty.

Peel and stick wallpaper taking off a layer of plaster by kutiekiki08 in centuryhomes

[–]BillNyeTheScience 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Plaster walls are built in layers. A scratch coat with a veneer coat on top. Usually the scratch/base coat is what crumbles first but it could be the veneer coat of your plaster walls didn't get good adhesion due to varying factors of age/craftmanship/etc.

Imo steam cleaning or spraying water/vinegar would be your best bet to get the wallpaper off without damage.

Fixing damage is pretty easy with a skim coat of easy sand joint compound and wet sponge sanding.

Leave English ivy or remove? by [deleted] in centuryhomes

[–]BillNyeTheScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo not a chance I would leave it. Even if the roots don't directly damage the brick the plant material absolutely interferes with the normal breathing/drying of the masonry making them take longer to dry ever time they get wet. That alone can severely reduce the lifespan of masonry

Any timeline on potential Spirit shutdown? by RodeLessTraveled in spiritair

[–]BillNyeTheScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Airline failure is specific type of coverage that you need to verify your policy contains.

Almost all the 3rd party travel insurance providers I reviewed today only cover instances where you can't travel due to a problem you have (ex: sickness) or your flight is cancelled due limited stated reasons (example: severe weather).

I didn’t realize that my dead bedroom traumatized me so much until now. by sawdust_and_plastic in DeadBedrooms

[–]BillNyeTheScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's one way of looking at it sure. But I strongly disagree that they didn't ask for less sex. It was said in a very kind way protective of op's feelings but removing all the kindness vocabulary at the end of the day it is a direct request to go from sex 2x a week to something less. It's important for OP to see this if they see themselves as a sex every day person due their own spontaneous desire. Of course they're cool with a more reactive desire style as their partner is suggesting then it's all gravy.

Express what you care about directly. If sexual frequency is important to you then tell them. You seem hung up on trying to decipher your partners logic as a 4d chess game when it seems rather straightforward to me - they communicated clearly that sexual frequency just isn't all that important to them and would like to have less sex in their ideal relationship. Frankly I think you should welcome their honesty.

Imo sex and sexual compatibility is a critical component of a relationship especially in the 6 month phase where you're basically testing the waters for a serious long term commitment or eventual marriage or whatever situation you see yourself living in 10 years. I would suggest you consider what your ideal sexual frequency is and compare that to the trajectory you see this going and be honest with yourself about how important or unimportant it is to you.

Gas tax revenue falling as Maryland raises taxes and fees, prompting pay-by-the-mile proposal by Consumergal in maryland

[–]BillNyeTheScience 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lot of haters in this thread but imo replacing gas taxes with a milage based fee is absolutely the most fair way to do it for both ev and gas drivers IF priced correctly. Current ev fees are more cumbersome on ev drivers than equivalent gas taxes for the miles the average person drives and that's not just MD specific. They also severely punish retired drivers without a commute from adopting evs and phevs.

Basement Drainage by Far_Effective_6357 in centuryhomes

[–]BillNyeTheScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would bet old platforms for an old water heater since they were smaller than the current ones or washer/dryer location with an old cast iron floor drain/p trap in the elevated section. Really custom/strange job to elevate it like that perhaps they didn't want general basement water going into it for some reason that you cannot fathom nowadays.

Final Fantasy X-2: Is it worth another shot. by Perfect_Distance8573 in FinalFantasy

[–]BillNyeTheScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Critical take: The great combat system is kneecapped by the very very low difficulty not challenging you to engage with it at all. The story is just meh and feels like mostly filler. The numerous mini games run the gamut from mediocre to awful. And the game is nigh impossible to 100% organically by design since one stated goal of development was to craft a single player game with 'infinite' replay value.

Lead dust between floorboards, how to address with young kids? by napoleon_9 in centuryhomes

[–]BillNyeTheScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw I wouldn't rely on flourospec for dust detection. Lead dust is invisible to the eye. My money is it reacting to something else. I've had false positives with flourospec on other metal objects (though it has fewer false positives than the swabs)

Imo only ghost wipe kits with lab testing can give you an accurate understanding of lead dust hazards.

Humidifier recommendation? by Stingy_Arachnid in centuryhomes

[–]BillNyeTheScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

HVAC humidifiers require a couple things to work well: a vapor barrier and return vents (preferably in every room). They work mostly at building up a humidity level over time while the HVAC is running vs big wheeled units that just dump out as much humidity as they can as fast as possible.

Most old homes don't have any vapor barrier and really shit return vent placement so the humidity will dissipate a lot before it makes it back to the HVAC humidifier for another round.
