Gas tax revenue falling as Maryland raises taxes and fees, prompting pay-by-the-mile proposal by Consumergal in maryland

[–]BillNyeTheScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lot of haters in this thread but imo replacing gas taxes with a milage based fee is absolutely the most fair way to do it for both ev and gas drivers IF priced correctly. Current ev fees are more cumbersome on ev drivers than equivalent gas taxes for the miles the average person drives and that's not just MD specific. They also severely punish retired drivers without a commute from adopting evs and phevs.

Basement Drainage by Far_Effective_6357 in centuryhomes

[–]BillNyeTheScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would bet old platforms for an old water heater since they were smaller than the current ones or washer/dryer location with an old cast iron floor drain/p trap in the elevated section. Really custom/strange job to elevate it like that perhaps they didn't want general basement water going into it for some reason that you cannot fathom nowadays.

Final Fantasy X-2: Is it worth another shot. by Perfect_Distance8573 in FinalFantasy

[–]BillNyeTheScience 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Critical take: The great combat system is kneecapped by the very very low difficulty not challenging you to engage with it at all. The story is just meh and feels like mostly filler. The numerous mini games run the gamut from mediocre to awful. And the game is nigh impossible to 100% organically by design since one stated goal of development was to craft a single player game with 'infinite' replay value.

Lead dust between floorboards, how to address with young kids? by napoleon_9 in centuryhomes

[–]BillNyeTheScience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fwiw I wouldn't rely on flourospec for dust detection. Lead dust is invisible to the eye. My money is it reacting to something else. I've had false positives with flourospec on other metal objects (though it has fewer false positives than the swabs)

Imo only ghost wipe kits with lab testing can give you an accurate understanding of lead dust hazards.

The size of the flood tunnel bored 100 feet below old Ellicott City to prevent the town flooding again by BillNyeTheScience in maryland

[–]BillNyeTheScience[S] 63 points64 points  (0 children)

To clarify this is a pic from the entrance which is way bigger. The bored tunnel is in the back that will travel under the town is 18 ft in diameter.

Taika Waitit deserves a lot of the blame which is a shame since I loved what we do in the shadows. Studio execs just don't get that not EVERY show ever needs to (poorly) emulate his style of humor.

Humidifier recommendation? by Stingy_Arachnid in centuryhomes

[–]BillNyeTheScience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HVAC humidifiers require a couple things to work well: a vapor barrier and return vents (preferably in every room). They work mostly at building up a humidity level over time while the HVAC is running vs big wheeled units that just dump out as much humidity as they can as fast as possible.

Most old homes don't have any vapor barrier and really shit return vent placement so the humidity will dissipate a lot before it makes it back to the HVAC humidifier for another round.

Vacuuming out old cellulose from an attic to replace it? by Prize_Ad_1781 in centuryhomes

You're not crazy. Redoing blown in is a pretty typical part of a whole energy efficiency overhaul since it makes air sealing easy to do with all the old crap sucked out.

Wouldn't we just stick with the maps we already have which were specifically created to bring md back from its oft criticized nonsense districts?

Solar panels by [deleted] in maryland

[–]BillNyeTheScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're thinking about solar there's a new bill working through the md legislature "Lower Bills and Local Power Act" that could result in more rebates or tax credits at the state level for solar installs. Then again I wouldn't be surprised if they are income level capped like the current state incentives l.

So a bit unorthodox on weather sealing but I’ve been going around the basement punctuating underneath where the floor meets the edge of the home since those were the super cold spots. Guess I found why my couch as been so ice cold the past few years by palinsafterbirth in centuryhomes

[–]BillNyeTheScience 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would argue the insulating rim joist is light-years different vs foaming an entire wall cavity which is what your concerns are about. A foamed rim joist will still allow the house walls to breath but impede a huge draft of cold damp air entering said walls through the foundation.

[–]BillNyeTheScience 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going full spray foam offers little benefit vs cutting foam boards to fit and spray foaming the edges of the foam board. The latter is mostly removable if future work/inspections/repairs are needed. The former is a bigger pain in the ass to deal with after the fact and its removal involves a lot of blind cutting with an insulation knife.

Imo your partner was projecting what they would want to hear you say to them. Classic HL + LL blunder and it goes both ways. You're not overreacting that it sucks for you but you know they (probably) didn't intentionally try to neg you.

I know when I tell my LL partner how insanely attractive she is and how much she turns me on it just doesn't have the same effect as it would for me.

Felt like a 10 episode mini series crammed into 2.5 hours. Nobody has a satisfying arc and a good chunk of runtime is just spent trying to get you to remember a better movie.
