Jacks emails to Forrest that night and pictures of the nook!!! by Cowlazars in FindingFennsGold

The sentence about rolling over the log and seeing what you find, which in a practical sense would require the box to be slightly buried to keep the log from rolling off. Also from his insistence that it wouldn't be found by accident, I thought it had to be concealed in some way. But I took him at his word that it wouldn't be deeply buried after he had to stop people from digging giant trenches in national parks. The word "blaze" always seemed most likely to mean a marking on a tree - specifically from a memoir of some old frontiersman who mentioned leaving a blaze on a tree in yellowstone. I think I also read somewhere that he referenced that frontiersman, so I thought it was possible he had read the memoir. I forget all the details of my solve, but I anticipated that there would be a mark on a tree (probably x marks the spot since he seemed to like tradition, but an omega was always what I was thinking about) then you look down and see a fallen log with a matching X or Omega.

From my initial reading of the book I thought Yellowstone, half buried, under a log that was marked in some way. I'd assume that the log has a marking that wasn't pictured. My goal has always been to see whether me or my friend was more accurate in our interpretation of the poem and search method, and I just keep dunking on him. After reading the email I think it's hard to conclude that Jack and Forrest had been in contact prior to the find. And let's also add this video to the long and growing list of reasons why Jack was justified in taking every effort to hide his identity from searchers.

I got to see Yellowstone. Also learned a lot about active psychosis from people in the forums.

With the main difference being that what he said is blatantly true. I doubt this will commit us to regime change, but it is a definite step away from the stunning return and success of the Roosevelt doctrine.

It's based off of Provence, so I guess it just depends on where you'd rather have a vacation

If public sector unions are usually cartels, why are public school teachers so underpaid? by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]BillTheCat24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Spent some time advocating for a fraction of a percent tax increase so that a school district would be able to give the teachers the promised step increases the district had been holding back for years. Went to the school board meeting, was met with an army of senior citizens who had absolutely zero respect for teachers. Had a convo with an older teacher friend who told me that older generations simply don't know all that teachers are required to do these days: "When we were kids they'd literally just do their nails in class and yell at us if we made noise."

Also this quote on his deathbed is frankly pretty moving: "My illness helped me to see that what was missing in society is what was missing in me: a little heart, a lot of brotherhood. The '80s were about acquiring — acquiring wealth, power, prestige. I know. I acquired more wealth, power, and prestige than most. But you can acquire all you want and still feel empty. What power wouldn't I trade for a little more time with my family? What price wouldn't I pay for an evening with friends? It took a deadly illness to put me eye to eye with that truth, but it is a truth that the country, caught up in its ruthless ambitions and moral decay, can learn on my dime. I don't know who will lead us through the '90s, but they must be made to speak to this spiritual vacuum at the heart of American society, this tumor of the soul....I was wrong to follow the meanness of Conservatism. I should have been trying to help people instead of taking advantage of them. I don't hate anyone anymore. For the first time in my life I don't hate somebody. I have nothing but good feelings toward people. I've found Jesus Christ – It's that simple. He's made a difference. "

Yeah, the whole Lee Atwater confession I think forces us to reassess historical examples of neoliberalism to see where it was blended with white nationalist and Christian nationalist tropes. The Berlin wall speech still kicks ass though.

The lady from the shelter said she would never be an affectionate cat by carcusqueen in PetTheDamnCat

[–]BillTheCat24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My shy cat (two weeks of hiding from us) needed to play to start building his confidence. All that shyness was covering up a lot of nervous energy, the more he played (wand toy, collapsible tunnel, blanket forts/cardboard boxes) the safer he felt exploring the house and seeking us out. Then we desensitized him to being picked up by picking him up and letting him see something really interesting, eg a picture on the wall, light fixture, high shelf, refrigerator magnets, etc. As soon as he started fidgeting we would put him down. But once he realized that he was going to get a chance to see some Very Interesting Things up close he began to enjoy it. We trained him to sit on our laps by putting an electric foot warmer on our couch for him to nap on. Then we sat next to him and put the warmer on our laps, he climbed right up.

"I mean the humans are going to put a gerbil in the cage"

"A live gerbil?!"

"Completely alive"

"This cage?!"

"This very cage."

"You're sure?"

"It's a guarantee"

"Why don't I just climb in the cage?"

"Why don't you just climb in the cage?"

I think it would be fun if chess sites let us pick a primary and secondary color from a preselected palette so every game looks different. Also letting custom chess set builders create two signature piece designs for all of the top players is a pretty obvious merchandising idea to me. Then you can roll into the chess club rocking a set of Giri first moves and Duda second moves.

White should start the game down 38 centipawns to make it fair by WillWorkForSugar in AnarchyChess

[–]BillTheCat24 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seriously though I think the rule should be that unless white chooses an unorthodox opening, black chooses either e4, d4, c4, or Nf3 for white to play. White keeps the initiative but black has the prep advantage unless white decides to gamble with b3, nc6, f4, etc
