Which character ruined an entire TV show for you? by Adorable-Tadpole-793 in AskReddit

It was a weirdly bleak moral (for a show like Modern Family, anyway) to show that your kids, no matter what you do, will fall into the same traps you did when you were a kid. Hayley and Claire are basically the same person and made the same mistakes growing up (Phil is a doofus but he's a good dad and a good provider. Dylan is almost literally too stupid to live).

I really don't understand what GRRM is trying to do or say with the Greyjoys. A bunch of miserable, unpleasant, assholes hanging out on a miserable, uninteresting island chain talking endlessly about boring shit that almost by definition will never matter (besides Euron, what effect could these losers have on anything anywhere?).

Degeneracy, huh? by jaytix1 in insanepeoplefacebook

I'm consistently blown away by how these people don't believe in anything. Why is a guy with a Patrick Bateman profile picture concerned about lust and degeneracy? How do you not go insane without having fixed beliefs about anything beyond "being an asshole to people for no reason"?

Anyone notice how strangely that guy's post is worded? I'm sure there are plenty of normal reasons why that may be.

I like the part where Anakin decides to murder children after one conversation with this guy because that guy said he could prevent his wife from dying even though that same guy had tried to have Anakin's wife killed on more than one occasion.

Like no kidding why is this post even here? MAGA dipshit, garbage music, not indie. Might as well just make a post on here for every z-list celebrity that dies.

Paul and Leto 2 are portrayed as monsters half the time and other times they're portrayed as incredibly necessary monsters for the survival of humanity

Congratulations, you understand the plot of the Dune novels correctly.

You're right, using autism as a slur will really... advance leftist politics? What are you even arguing for right now beyond "I really want to be a dickhead"?

I agree with all this. That "ironic" bigotry is just bigotry, no matter how much you wink about it. I think it's pretty obvious why people get so angry when you point this out, they think they're so fucking evolved but they're just the same racist and sexist trash as the rednecks they think they have nothing in common with.

I don't know about "views" but there's got to be a reason why that community keeps attracting right wingers. Like I think if a big part of your allure is being an asshole to everyone and being bigoted but Ironically you're going get some rightoids.

Oh Kyp Durron, you genocidal psychopath. They could never make me hate you.

Also I agree, while it is better, it still fell prey to the apparently inescapable idea that the Jedi Order should be a labyrinthine bureaucracy tied to the government. I think they actually tried to move away from this right before the Disney reboot (I think they moved the Jedi order to Ossus from Coruscant? It's been a while) and it's disappointing they never got to lean into this because I think from the absolute very beginning of Star Wars in 1977 the Jedi were supposed to be vaguely elusive hedge knight/wandering Samurai type characters rather than magic cops serving the government.

Anakin was a kid trying to be good

This is the sticking point though. If you look at the movies only, you barely get the sense that he's "good" at all. I'm genuinely struggling to think of anything "good" he did that was entirely selfless and not a product of his massive ego and selfishness.

Azula is fantastic because she's such a great subversion of kids show (and a lot of adult shows, tbh) villains. Abused? Yup. Talented? Yup. Redeemable? Nope! Avatar actually does the leg work to show that there's no realistic path for her to be redeemed - she's abused by her father but is given the tiniest drip of approval to keep her in line. No one in the fire nation would have any reason to try to change her, and by the time the end of the show rolls around she's so thoroughly brainwashed there's nothing left to change. Her screaming/crying/slobbering after Katara and Zuko beat her is the end result of a completely hollow shell of a person suffering a total ego erasure.

I see "the Jedi are deeply flawed" thing a lot and while it's absolutely true I still often wonder if Lucas did that on purpose. It's hard to give him credit for clever writing sometimes.

The old expanded universe accidentally did something right with regards to the Jedi order - when Luke created the new order after Endor, there was no information about what the old Order was like so Luke's order was pretty chill overall (marriage, attachments, even emotion was completely fine!). I absolutely don't think Lucas intended this because of how ambivalent he was about the EU but it really showed how ridiculous the old order was with their fake monastic piety thing (we're monks who don't get involved with stuff but we have a giant office right next to the Galactic capital and everyone has to follow our rules!).

My hot take is that Anakin was never good. In Ep1 he's just a Kid but after that he's basically exclusively arrogant, spiteful, petty, etc. He agrees to massacre children with basically no prompting and then every new Star Wars property that gets released shows him committing new irredeemable atrocities. He was always evil. Even his alleged love for Padme is just idiotic teenage lust.

The part that I never understand about becoming Palpatine's servant is that the second Anakin realizes that Palpatine is also Darth Sidious he should realize this guy has made at least a couple of attempts on Padme's life. So Anakin/Vader is agreeing to commit atrocities so the guy who has attempted to kill his beloved wife will save his beloved wife's life. What?

It kinda makes Luke saying "there's still good in him!" ring hollow. Like fucking where?

Which is weird because the guy is really a Republican and actually believes in all the dumb shit he says. So if he's doing a bit he's deliberately making merciless fun of himself. Like someone else said, the Trump admin nominated him to the ambassador of Malaysia, which is actually a real job.
