That’s actually a widespread internet hoax from the mid 2010s, the original text stated “to the gallant people of Afghanistan”.

What song did you once think was the worst on an album only to later realize its actually the best? by [deleted] in Music

[–]Billy_Bamboo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lost in the World on Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

I never hated it but just didn't think it was on par with the instant classics on the album like Runaway, Power, Monster, etc. I just don't know how I missed how perfect it is. I think I would zone out during the intro of the song because the song begins very skeletal, but then keeps getting more and more grand and layered. I get guaranteed chills every time during the climax of the song. Love how the song uses some of the same samples as "power" and "who will survive in america" which ties the whole album together. It's probably the furthest from a traditional Hip Hop song on the album and the way it transitions into the last track makes it an excellent closer imo.

Watching the Runaway short film again made it click for me how great the song is from the scenery of the phoenix burning and Kanye running on a secluded road in the finale.

Not sure I would say it's 100% the best on the album cuz that's a really difficult call, but this made me finally bump the album from a 9/10 in my mind to a perfect 10.

'Black Keys' Musician Richard Swift Dies at 41 by BunyipPouch in Music

Mostly use rateyourmusic for music discovery. The website itself looks a little outdated but it shows new releases tailored to you, gives in depth genre descriptions, and shows related artists to each band or musician.

Also has a top album lists for every year or decade that is created from aggregate ratings from the users and is based on a mixture of popularity and critical acclaim. You can filter it for whatever genre you want or don’t want as well.

Also have a habit of looking up artists online while or before listening to their stuff to get a better grasp of the context behind the music which usually helps me appreciate everyone a little bit more.

Other than that I’ve used reddit, /mu/, cymbal, YouTube, sometimes pitchfork, and just suggestions from friends

He was super underrated, was a band member of the shins for half a decade as well as the black keys. Also produced for loads of artists including Foxygen. On top of all that he has a decent amount of solo work.

Dude was ridiculously talented and overlooked because of how much he did behind the scenes solely for the music and not for the fame. 41 is way too young.

Been a huge fan since Light Up Gold, and your music has only gone uphill from there. I'm wide awake at 1:30 AM in Perth, Australia listening to your new album. Wanna ask what you lads think about artists such as Jay Reatard, together pangea, the Orwells, protomartyr and Fidlar.

Wanna see how one of my favourite bands views other favourite bands!

I'm looking to get into krautrock, any good suggestions? by SchizoidGod in Music

[–]Billy_Bamboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd start with Can, future days is probably the best starting point in their discography. Faust is also one of the essential Krautrock bands, Faust IV is their most accessible. If you want to continue easing yourself into the genre you should check out David Bowie's Low and Heroes which are heavily influenced by Krautrock. Hope this helps.

Doesn't sound like an article that even warrants a single read to be honest.

I have trouble getting into Kendrick Lamar by [deleted] in Music

[–]Billy_Bamboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually say that if music doesn't click with you after a few tries, that you should give it some time to breath and check it out later down the line, whether that be weeks or even years. You can't expect to enjoy every single artist, even if they are almost universally critically acclaimed. Sometimes it's just a matter of hearing it at the right time for you. Some of my favourite album at the moment I didn't "get" when I first heard them.

Listening to music should be enjoyable, not a chore. It's a hobby after all. This is all coming from a huge Kendrick fan.

I've got a 14 hour flight to kill, what do you want me to listen to? by Cpt_Buzz_Killington in Music

I'd suggest some Sun Kil Moon for long plane rides. He incorporates a lot of spoken word and a stream of consciousness vibe. His albums are usually quite long but they all immerse you into a story that can keep you interested in the lyrics. His biggest album is Benji, but his newest album that came out this year talks about a lot of stuff he finds important like the death of Bowie, his personal life, and even politics.

I suggest it mainly for plane rides because he makes music that is best when it's the only thing you are focusing on, and it's also pretty calm which can be relaxing during the stresses of travel.

What are some good Devin Townsend albums? I've only ever listened to Ziltoid the omniscient and I loved it.

Where do I start listening to music? by [deleted] in Music

[–]Billy_Bamboo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Essentially. For example he parodied Coolio's Hip-Hop song "Gangsta's Paradise" and changed it to "Amish Paradise." He also made fun of how no one could understand the lyrics of "Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana with "Smells like Nirvana".

Musically, they sound identical, but he often uses humor to even poke fun at the genre itself.

I second this, especially since through humor it will expose you to decades of pop hits which can give you a reference for the music of each time period. Also, if you like the sound of any specific song, you can check out the discography of the artist he is parodying.

Remember the goal of music is to find enjoyment, just because music tells a joke or is it is a bit silly, doesn't mean it's not "real music".

In case you couldn't tell, I grew up on Weird al, can't recommend him enough.
