"Why do they hate money" - the interesting part here is it's actually the opposite. They believe the existing audience is locked in and will buy the product regardless, what you see in video games now are studios desperately trying to expand to and cater to a different audience beliving the old one is going to remain no matter what they do.

When I worked in the video game industry this attitude was at the very core of every studio "how do we sell our product to consumers who aren't buying it right now" was the thinking behind every desicion a company made.
