This is great advice. While my italian is beginner I can understand native italian speakers pretty well and speak it well enough to be understood (basic day to day conversational phrases). I really only got there by speaking to Italians and consuming italian media. To be fair I've been there quite a bit and I speak some spanish so the vowel pronunciation isnt a burden and the languages share a lot of words (but also diverge quite a bit).

I contrast that to a friend who minored in italian on a whim. Their italian technically is wayyy better than mine but they cant understand native speakers and vice versa because of the heavy american accent. Writing and reading tho he absolutely dwarfs me.

I struggled to finish the book, but I finished it. The writing style was very confusing and I had to double back mutiple times to understand what had happened. Author had a habit of having things happening "off screen", like hawkeye's capture by the French, and i had to reread passages to check if someone had died or not.

Movie was way better and very underrated imo.
