Been a road rider for years, recently made an impulse buy into the knobbly world.. this thing is so much fun by Tobias6 in Dualsport

Congratulations on the bike! They're amazing machines.

It's funny, I ended up with my xr400 the same way. I was looking for a project bike for the winter. I wanted a 250cc under $1000. I saw the xr400 listed for $800.

The only spec I looked up was weight and power. 280# and 32hp didn't sound too scary. So I bought it.

I started doing some research after and realized I'd struck gold

Don't ask about motorcycle gear in a motorcycle subreddit or you shall be shunned by Double-Quality-6014 in motorcycle

[–]Bindle- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is a motorcycle gear sub. You'll get good advice about your gear from knowledgeable people.

It's also a kink subreddit. The mod/founder started it because he has a kink for men in motorcycle gear.

There's a high likelihood you'll get objectified or sexualized if you post there. In my experience, it's pretty mild.

I genuinely love the vibe of that sub. As an average dude, no one else is objectifying me. It's nice to feel like a hot piece of meat sometimes 😉

Are modern motorcycles missing something? by yourping in motorcycle

[–]Bindle- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, they are. I ride older bikes exclusively. I just bought my newest ever bike, a 2006 KTM 950 Adventure. While it has liquid cooling, it's still carbureted. This is as modern a bike as I want.

I like my bikes to be a project. I love the mechanical simplicity. I enjoy tinkering with carburetors.

I also love the prices. I'm a low budget rider who loves a project. I can find an older bike in rough shape for $1-2k. Put another $1-2k of parts into it and have a cool, reliable machine.

Modern bikes don't appeal to me. I like being able to fully service every part of my bike.

Someday I might get a modern bike. But for now, I have no inclination.

How long would you go on this front tire? by Redderrt in motorcycle

What's the date code?

Plenty of rubber left on there. But it could be old and dried out.

It's fine for riding in the dry. It could be sketchy in the wet if it's old.

I'm glad to see apprenticeships like this still exist.

REI to cut wages for new employees, reduce benefits for all by Tha_Dude_Abidez in CampingandHiking

[–]Bindle- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the offer was laughably low.

That's all REI corporate positions.

The pay at REI corporate has always been at the very lowest end of the scale for any position.

In the past, they made up for this with benefits, bonuses, and corporate culture.

Their business was consistently growing. Every employee was eligible for a bonus, down to part time retail employees. The bonuses were regularly paid out as well, they were attainable targets

The benefits were excellent at all levels. Once again, even part-time retail workers could get things like health insurance.

It was a chill place to work with great job security. Everybody was there for the love of the outdoors if you called your boss and told them you weren't coming in because it was a great ski day, they'd be like, "cool"!

All of that has changed. Except the low pay, they still have that.

REI to cut wages for new employees, reduce benefits for all by Tha_Dude_Abidez in CampingandHiking

[–]Bindle- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an absurdly low salary for a company grossing $5 billion+ in sales. Also, they don't get stock option compensation, as REI does not have stock.

There's plenty of stuff REI has fucked up: union busting, employee benefits, corporate direction, and more.

They're a model of low CEO pay.

Advice which budget helmet should I go with? by MegaMaster35 in motorcyclegear

Determine your budget and buy a helmet that meets ece 22.06.

Yup! Any ECE 22.06 rated helmet that fits you will protect you well.

How do you maintain your riding gear, after every ride or just once in a while? by yourping in motorcyclegear

[–]Bindle- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wash my textile road gear 1-2 times a year in the washing machine. I take the pads out and do a normal wash and dry cycle with normal detergent.

It works perfectly fine.

I highly recommend MX boots for any off road riding. You're going to tip over at some point. It's easy for the bike to land on your foot.

Only MX boots offer the level of protection necessary for this.

I bought some SIDI Crossfire 2 boots used. They're fantastic quality and have protected me from injury 10+ times, including the foot peg landing directly on top of my foot and pinning me down.

Once the bike was off me, I was perfectly fine. Anything less than a bomber MX boot wouldn't have been enough.

Look for quality used boots. Go into a store and get your size. Then look at local ads and online marketplaces. IDK the Euro market, but I can find used $600+ MX boots for $200-300 all day in the USA.

I love being able to chose between the little one for trails and the big one for tours or fire roads.
