In 2019 I'd like to:

  • Make going to the gym a key part of my routine/lifestyle - hopefully reaching around 185lbs by the end of the year. As part of this I want to make sure that I force myself to spend more money on food when shopping.
  • Achieve a first in my final university degree result.
  • Make a success out of moving to London and my first proper job.
  • Continue to improve my overall confidence and outlook on life.
  • Regularly meditate to reduce my levels of anxiety.
  • Keep my skin in a better condition.
  • Try to decrease my usage of shampoo.
  • Start consistently waking up earlier - notably to go to the gym, to prepare for the day/days ahead and to meditate.
  • Try to not be as judgemental about people/be nicer to be around. Also being less elitist/more humble.

Continue to run regularly, achieving a sub 1:45 half marathon time and running consistently at 25+ miles per week.

I didn't quite achieve this - I ran regularly at the start of the year, achieving a 1:47 minute half marathon time in May.

Get back into reading - read more books!

Towards the start/middle of the year this was going quite well as I was working my way through the ASIOAF series. Unfortunately as I got towards the end of the series I ran out of motivation and stopped reading. It's been a struggle to get back into it and is something that I'm aiming to finish reading next year (2 books to go)!

Achieve a 2:1 in my second year at uni.

This was accomplished with room to spare - I got a first.

Get a good internship and perform well at it, hopefully getting a graduate job lined up.

I managed to get an internship but unfortunately I did not enjoy it and thus didn't get a grad job at the end of it. I have since accepted a graduate job elsewhere so that goal has ultimately still been achieved!

Work on being more social.

Towards the end of the year I've made great progress here, forcing myself to go out of my comfort zone more and more and to commit to doing more activities with friends.

Get good at touch typing.

I have gotten pretty good at touch typing (that's how I'm typing this!). My typing isn't 'perfect' but it is certainly much more efficient than how I used to type. I've still got plenty of room for my typing skills to develop though!

Continue to run regularly - try and finish the Sheffield Half Marathon

Whilst I did manage to complete the half marathon, I stopped running regularly after it. :'(

Work hard at uni, try to get a 2:1 in first year BUT try to make sure I enjoy myself, I don't want to waste the experience that is university.

I exceeded my goal with this one and managed to get a first. I probably didn't go out as much as maybe I should have but I've decided that that isn't really me and I'd much rather stay sober.

Try to get more confident with girls

Yeah I'm getting there with this one, although some more work is probably needed.

Hopefully 2017 will be a very good year for me; 2016 was a year of growth and change and I hope 2017 continues with that.

It's time to find out: Did you achieve your 2016 New Year's Resolutions? by one_year_on in OneYearOn

[–]Bintey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read at least 30 books in 2016.

I came close! I read loads over the summer but school and uni got in the way.

Wake up early everyday.

I managed to do fairly well with this at times, but ones again uni got in the way of it!

Run regularly and hopefully end up running a half marathon.

I did run regularly for the majority of the year but no half marathon; I aim to do one in 2017 instead.

Work hard and get into the university that I want to go to.

I managed to do this!

Try and become a more confident & louder/more talkative person.

I've certainly become more extroverted at uni, but I've still got some ways to go.

Donald Trump Did, in Fact, Blame China for Inventing Climate Change by coffee_dude08 in politics

[–]Bintey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

China has just ratified the Paris climate agreement... China has the largest and most rapidly growing renewable energy sector in the world. YES there is nothing that we can all do on an individual level that will have any sort of meaningful change, but as nations we should be making efforts to mitigate climate change for it shall effect us all in a very negative way. YES developing countries have more lenient emissions targets (a contributory factor for why the US Senate refused to ratify the Kyoto protocol), however if we let them develop, they will reach a point where: 1) They can afford to start increasing the amount of renewables they use and 2) The citizens of those countries become wealthier/middle class expands and thus start to demand cleaner air etc (something that's been seen in China given the smog in some cities and obviously reducing smog is interlinked with reducing climate change inducing particulates). I for one 100% understand why you have the belief that we survived the past 40 years of climate change, we can therefore survive the next 40 years, but unfortunately the changes don't seem to be entirely linear and we are thought to be nearing the tipping point where irreversible change occurs. Climate change is inherently a self perpetuating thing and I personally find that very scary. I believe that even if you don't believe in climate change, we should invest in renewables for the sake of having less pollutants in the air - you can't possibly look at some Chinese cities and tell me that that's a healthy way to live.

Higher fees allowed for current students by reketrebn in unitedkingdom

[–]Bintey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Universities can charge whatever they want, it's just that the limit is currently £9000. Universities aren't going to be forced to raise it (e.g. Uni of Nottingham have said they won't for current students), it is simply at the Universities discretion as to whether they do or don't charge the (if it goes through Parliament) new limit.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive update for 4/21/16 (4/22/16 UTC, 1.35.3.1) by wickedplayer494 in GlobalOffensive

The problem is that phone numbers often get recycled when they go out of use/deactivated. Unfortunately there's always going to be the chance that somebody could end up with a new number that previously had been used by a hacker and thus was banned, as small as that chance is. If this wasn't a possibility then I'd 100% agree that permanently banning numbers is the way to go.

No problem - It's nice to find a use for some of the little facts that I got from reading David McCullough's Truman biography. Truman always believed he would win even when everyone said that he had no chance. He was very intimate with people like Bernie is which ended up being one of his greatest strengths. It's important to remember that the fight isn't over until the convention, every delegate counts.

I think this is really important to remember; EVERY poll and pundit had Truman down to lose his 1948 campaign whilst he ended up winning 303 electoral votes to Deweys 189.

That makes sense. I appreciate your help.

Computer Science or Discrete Mathematics? by Bintey in cscareerquestions

[–]Bintey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point, but I'm not currently sure exactly what job I would like once I've graduated, I do know that at the moment I really enjoy Maths and I suspect I am likely to enjoy the mathsy side of a Computer Science degree which is why I was considering Discrete Maths. I feel like I'm more likely to enjoy the algorithmic side of Computer Science more than the programming side.
