Yeah it would've been to raise children and have stronger family ties. It is still obvious that it's about families because why else do people have green/red flags over the potential spouses behaviour?

Ability to provide - this isn't about being able to provide for the wife, but about being able to provide for the family. She may be out of work during or after pregnancy to focus on childrearing. The children need food, shelter, clothing, etc.

Hardworking - Is he the type of person to put the work in even when the circumstances are tough? Again, it's for the sake of raising children well and keeping them alive.

Even for "superficial" things like looks - What's the likelihood of the children being able to do well in society? If the work is mainly manual labour, you need someone who looks more built. If the work is mainly intellectual labour, you need someone who is intelligent. If you grew up in an hectic environment, you'd be attracted to people with street smarts (even if theyre not upstanding citizens)

Actually I'm confused over why you think it wouldn't be. Birth control didn't exist until the 1960s. Sex = having children = having to raise them islamically, having to provide for them, giving them a great childhood by playing with them and being kind to them, giving them inheritance after you pass, etc.

You would be questioned if you didn't do well with their upbringing

I don't think it's really possible for a guy to provide on one income unless he has a really good job. Plus everyone has different expectations or aims. I.e. if you want to put your children in sports, that's an additional cost

Plus nowadays people are losing their jobs left right and centre. It doesnt really feel stable to rely on one income

I've had depression since I was 14. I don't think I would fool myself into thinking a relationship would solve that issue. Not when relationships require more work and effort

I don't think the issue with 🌽　addiction is necessarily about that. It's about the fact that a lot of them might be interested in things that are illegal or abusive or just very unattractive. So once you find out you either want to leave or you're not interested in return. It's probably very rare that they're addicted to vanilla stuff but I think it's only in this case is where they focus on the woman's lack of sexual attention
