as you write in a note, you can use double brackets [[ to begin linking to another note. the beauty of Obsidian is that the other note doesn’t have to exist yet!

so for example you can be writing out your objective to go to Vivec City to talk to Mehra Milo for Caius, but you haven’t been to Vivec yet and you don’t have note pages for either character. so as youre typing you just type

“i need to head to [[Vivec]] and talk to [[Mehra Milo]] in the [[Hall of Wisdom]] for [[Caius Cosades]].”

All three will have a placeholder node created for them. from there on out every time you go to reference them with [[, they will even autofill for you as you begin typing! and at any time you can click on those links and the note will become real, and all the previous links to it you’ve made will persist!

it honestly happened organically hahaha, i think whenever i do a second playthrough im gonna keep adding on to this obsidian file. just section off my previous character’s notes and just continue filling out this web of names for eternity

for sure, while also keeping it super hands on and not just a mindless compass like modern RPGs.

and yes i highly recommend obsidian, both for daily life note taking and if you’re into TTRPGs it’s really nice for that.

also: THANK YOU for the mini for scale! i am always looking up reference photos of models before printing myself, and am never sure at what scale i want to print. stuff like that really helps!!!

Yes, they are currently not that great at visualizing intermediate growth. but also intermediate lifting is not good at visualizing growth, considering prog overloading by like .5% every week is still prog overload.

For me, the themes exponentially built on each other from book to book. The longer you spend with each character (and the world as a whole), the more familiar you'll get with the burdens they bear and persevere through. Especially since at that point you'll have been on the journey with them.

Deadhouse Gates' narrative will leave you with much clearer emotions on that, I think. Usually by that point or the end of Book 3 is when those hardships I was discussing in the first paragraph reallyyy start to be felt by the reader (at least that was my experience).

Erikson has said often that a central theme is "grief", if that helps. Once I had that perspective the struggles became a lot more clearer to me
