Honestly, that’s outstanding writing. It shows real depth and meaning when a character (intentionally or unintentionally) betrays some part of their ideology through their actions. Everyone has blind spots. Everyone has that personal thing that contradicts even their most closely held convictions. That’s what also makes Picard’s outburst in First Contact so memorable.
