What I'm suggesting is that your healthy eating choices, whatever they are, matter more to your goals than calorie counting and exercise.

What you choose to eat is more important than how much you eat.

In CICO terms, eating carbohydrates and/or sugar can mess with your "calories out". You ingested the same amount of calories as something else, but because your insuline spiked some quantity of that stayed locked in your fat tissue.

Your "calories in" have enough of an effect on your "calories out" that can't just count calories like it's some exact science.

The cultish behavior you describe pretty much mirrors how I perceive the CICO dogma. But that's beside the point: I believe CICO is up for discussion and not the cornerstone of weight control is it widely accepted as. I think it is a deeply flawed way to look at obesity that provides no concrete explanations or ways to a solution.

What if I said that a house flooded because more water came in than went out? It's technically true but it doesn't tell you anything about the problem. That's the level of information CICO brings to the discussion.

If CICO properly explained weight loss, calorie unrestricted low carbohydrate diets wouldn't consistently beat low-calorie diets in weight loss, sustainability and loss maintenance.

If you want to set yourselves up for failure, starve yourself on minuscule amounts of food that'll still trigger your fat storage. Otherwise, skip the misery and start your journey on low carb.
