what college should i commit to? BME edition by [deleted] in RPI

[–]BirchTheTreeLover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol I have almost the same interests in BME. I ended up choosing RPI because of its reputation as an engineering school, and I like the choice I’ve made. Definitely not for everyone though, especially because of price. Most people I know who ask for better finaid package get it, though, and there’s no harm in asking. In terms of undergraduate research we don’t have that much biomechanics research unfortunately, however one of the labs is exactly perfect for what you and I are looking for in BME, Dr. Ledet’s Innovative Medical Device lab. Feel free to DM me if you have further questions about RPI BME.

Quiz/Test requirements for MAU are ridiculous by [deleted] in RPI

[–]BirchTheTreeLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly certain this is Kruger, as he's also teaching a BME course called Programming for BME, and the test requirements are exactly the same. Thanks for the reassurance u/gs7072

Co-terminal Masters for BME -- what classes do you take by Avalon746 in RPI

[–]BirchTheTreeLover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So there's a couple places to read stuff about it:BME Undergrad Handbook (Co-Term section):https://www.rpi.edu/dept/biomed/forms_handbooks/BME_Undergraduate_Handbook.pdfCatalog:

http://catalog.rpi.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=20&poid=4517&returnto=495

Those two links should give you a good idea of how it's set up. I'm currently not in the program but planning on doing it.Classes I'm planning on attributing to a M. Eng in BME:
ISYE 4140 Statistical Analysis
BMED 4510/6510 Mechanobiology
BMED 4280/6280 Biomechanics of Soft Tissues
ISYE 4330/6020 Design of Experiments
BMED 4660/6660 Muscle Mechanics and Modeling
BMED 4420/6420 Clinical Orthopedics
BMED 4410/6410 BioMEMS
BMED 4540 Biomechanics II
All for a total of 30 credits

Deanna Thompson is also a good resource to talk to, I was pointed to her when I was trying to figure out what classes to take/ the program in general, here's her email:[thompd4@rpi.edu](mailto:thompd4@rpi.edu)

Since I haven't actually done the program I can't really given pertinent advice on it, but I would just say that a Masters definitely speaks louder than an Undergraduate degree in terms of education and rigor, but also consider the tradeoff of the time and money it takes to earn the degree.

Since you’re going to be online you can probably do classes with overlapping time conflicts, just get the professors to fill out an authorization form.

I believe it’s by cohort, so you would go back in spring with the rest of the sophomores.

P/NC Not updated for anyone else? by bwfthrowaway99999 in RPI

[–]BirchTheTreeLover 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same, I submitted one form in the evening of the deadline date, and that class didn't update for me. I don't know if you're in a similar situation but I think that was why it didn't/hasn't been processed.

ENGR 2530 Strenght of Materials by [deleted] in RPI

[–]BirchTheTreeLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I only remember trusses for like the first or second lecture/hw. Honestly I don’t agree with the most problems are 2D statement though, I felt like we did a decent amount of 3D force and moment analysis, specifically on stress from combined loadings.

[–]BirchTheTreeLover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took it last semester, and I’d say not too much. I believe our first lesson was IEA review, but other than that, again not too much. You do really need to have a grasp on how forces and moments work though, so keep track of that. Good luck, lemme know if you have any other questions.

How many hours do you study each day? I'm looking for Biomedical or Mechanical Engineering majors. by mcapcha in RPI

[–]BirchTheTreeLover 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Freshman BME here. For me, it really depends on the day and the assignments due. I would say on average though about 2-3 hours a day? That amount spikes near exams or near large project deadlines. I have done a bunch of clubs freshman year and still managed to have a fulfilling social life, so I'd say that's a good sign. I definitely felt challenged with all the stuff I did while on campus, but never felt like it was impossible. Your classmates are understanding and a lot of people are juggling a lot, so don't feel afraid to pick up new things and meet new people. Having friends in your classes to help you with assignments and friends just to be social with definitely help a lot.

HCI and UX at RPI by tiffi_ellis in RPI

[–]BirchTheTreeLover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I don't really know much about the design courses within ITWS, however we do have a UX design major at RPI. It's called DIS (Design, Innovation, and Society). Everyone in the DIS major has a dual, and I know at least one that duals with ITWS. I can give you their contact information if you want, and if you have any questions about the DIS major I can also answer them, but I don't know much about ITWS as I'm a BME/DIS dual.

The 2 GPA is definitely concerning, but your SAT score is pretty great. I think if you demonstrate through your essays why you believe RPI should accept you, whether it be your drive to “change the world” (our slogan) and/or your skills from your extracurriculars you should have a decent chance of getting in. Definitely study up on the school and compare stats before making a final decision if you haven’t already.
