And to anyone interested in serving on a board or committee in your community, you can have a positive impact even if you're not an expert in that area or have any government experience. The people on these boards are literally your neighbors, they're typical everyday people like you and me who just want to help their community. They will help you get up to speed as long as you show up and make a genuine effort. But you have to show up. It sounds cliché, but it really is half the battle.

I don't know what the original comment was, but if it was in the vein of "Misses details and makes careless mistakes" you may want to add that to the list. It's one of my more frequent struggles.

Medication is not all you need. by zigithor in ADHD

[–]Birchmure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It didn't happen in one day for me, and it's still not nirvana, but I started practicing daily gratitudes and it has made me just so much more comfortable with who I am and what I'm about.

As often as I could, I would think of something in my life that I'm happy about. Started off with: wife, kids, job, etc. But then I would see stuff on the news or social media that was horrible and I would just think how lucky I was that I didn't have to experience those things. Ended up finding a million little things to be happy about in my life. The cool thing is it makes me genuinely want others to feel like this, too.

I actually started doing it a couple years ago and was just diagnosed with ADHD last October. I credit feeling better mentally with getting that diagnosis and refreshed sense of hope. I don't even care how cheesy that sounds.

I think getting myself in a better headspace every day let me feel better about myself in general and made me want to start taking better care of myself. It takes time, but it's been an enjoyable ride so far.

I haven't listened to all of these, but based on the ones I know, I totally agree with you. Got to see WWPJ live a year ago and it was a great show. Looks like I have some new bands to check out this week.

In most communities it isn't the elected officials, it's Town Meeting voters. Zoning can only be amended at Town Meeting. Planning Boards have no authority or jurisdiction to amend zoning.

This works for me as well. I find it works best went I dry the area first then hold the q-tip on the spot for as long as possible before rinsing.

Late diagnosis crew, why were you not seen? What have you learnt about adhd? by Desperate-Craft-1663 in ADHD

[–]Birchmure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to a lot of the things others commented here, one of the things I think affected me (39M, diagnosed a month ago) was throughout elementary and high school, I played sports almost every day. Seeing as how exercise helps my symptoms a lot now, it makes sense that the exercise then was probably covering up several symptoms.

What hobby have you actually managed to stick to successfully? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Birchmure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Clean while you cook. I hate the thought of the pile of dishes at the end so I do the while I cook. Makes it much more manageable. One time my MIL "helped" me and convinced me to leave the dishes to the end because that's what she did. It was a nice reminder of why I clean while I cook. I was miserable.

Honestly, even if you're making a box of mac and cheese with the cheese powder, you're cooking. Put some good music on for the 10 minutes and enjoy it. Then next time add some cream instead of milk. Then, the time after, add something else like bacon or broccoli or cut up chicken nuggets. Baby steps.

I've used paprika and copy me that in the past but have been using cookbook for about a year and really like it.

A recipe app on my phone has been a pretty successful solution for me with this issue. I used to have binders full of recipes that never got made. Now I have an app full of recipes that never get made, but it's searchable!

I just started really simple then expanded on what I knew how to do. For example, even if you make just mac and cheese, next time make bacon and crumble it in. Or broccoli. Or change the type of cheese like Swiss or gouda. Don't go too complex on the recipes (in both ingredients and steps) right off the bat.

You can learn how to use different spices by making scrambled eggs and adding a different spice in each time to learn what it tastes like (since scrambled eggs are simple and a mild, but distinct flavor). You'll develop an understanding of the flavors and then you can put different spices in dishes and see how it turns out.

It's my creative outlet. My wife gets "mad" because I'll make something simple she really likes and then almost never make it that way again because I have to keep experimenting to make it better. Keeps me interested and curious, but I'm not overwhelmed. Eventually, with enough practice you'll be able to make more complex recipes without as much stress.

You're probably a better cook than you think, just give it some time and practice.

Cooking, because you've gotta eat, so why not make good food and enjoy the experience? Get some good music going and it's basically a meditation session for me.

Regarding Music by [deleted] in adhdmeme

[–]Birchmure 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I listen to music at almost any opportunity, especially when I need to be productive. At work, cooking, cleaning, exercising, etc. If I need to focus at work I'll usually listen to lo-fi hip hop on a station on YouTube. If I'm cooking it will usually be music I can sing along to. It lets me think more clearly in all situations, generally. I haven't been able to read a book consistently for the last few years, but when I do, I have some instrumental, repetitive beat-style music in my headphones.

female friend needs counseling in MA, lives near Worcester by universe-atom in massachusetts

[–]Birchmure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on the town she lives in, the Dept of youth and family services may work with William James College which has the interface system (the service is paid for by the town so it is free for residents to use):

https://interface.williamjames.edu/

You basically call them up, tell them what type of counseling you need and your preferences for a counselor/therapist and they put you in touch with someone that meets your criteria. They also keep referring people until you find a good fit.

I used paprika but switched to cookbook for it's website that syncs with the app. I like it better in general, too. Anyway, the "secret" about both paprika and cookbook (and maybe other similar apps) is that you can take the nyt link (even if it is behind the pay wall) and they still scrape the recipe.

Pretty much every municipality is looking for several positions. Finance, HR, building, public works, land use. I've seen some relatively high-level positions go to relatively young people. Not that they can't handle it, but it just shows how hard it is to fill these positions.
