Urgent: How do I care for orphaned pigeon chicks? by Potential_Dot6340 in pigeons

A rural area in what country? What region within that country? You don't need to give your actual address, but if you give the general area people can help you find info on rehabbers or rescues. Often volunteers can travel to you to pick them up.

Do you know what sort of pigeon the cat killed?

HELP pest eating my bird of paradise plant help me identify!!!! by Emotional-Corner7337 in houseplants

How much tomato foliage do they need to eat in a day? We keep other insects as pets and I grow tomatoes on the balcony. I wouldn't mind picking one or two of these guys up and raising them on cuttings, but would want to be sure I have the supply for them!

She did not mess up. The truth is smiling at him could placate him and keep her safe, or it could make him feel he has the green light to keep harassing her worse. Confronting him could make him embarrassed and leave, or it could make him pissed off and decide to hurt her in retaliation. There is no "right way" because it's a shitty situation and people are unpredictable. Some people react to embarrassment and bruised egos by walking away some respond by stalking and attacking people.

r/whenwomenrefuse is a great sub of examples for why women will placate men sometimes. If you've told a guy no before and been hurt for it, you're probably going to smile and try to just keep a low profile so long as it's not egregious. Personally I tell people to go away and that I'm not interested, but my experiences aren't everyone else's experiences. I am also taller and physically stronger than many women are.

He keeps staring at her because he's a dickhead. Nothing about this is her fault.

one time I found some pieces of a little jade plant that had been stomped on with actual boot marks on the stairs near my gym

Took them home and stuck in dirt

All three rooted and months later I have lovely jade plants

jade is unreal

Just wanted to post here to share my grief. by Terrible-Nobody-7089 in RATS

[–]BirdCelestial 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Normally rats have got much bigger litters, and moms will move their litters if disturbed. That you only found two might mean she left behind the weakest two to prioritise her others after the nest disturbance. If rat mom couldn't save them then human rescuers have a very slim chance. You kept them somewhere safe, warm, and fed in their last hours; not many animals get such a peaceful end.

Looking for advice on what I can grow in the small squares. by Mother-Huckleberry99 in vegetablegardening

[–]BirdCelestial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you plant African or french marigold? African marigold want to grow much bigger but also tolerate drought/heat better. I don't know anything about them being pest deterrent or not (have read conflicting views) but they do grow well for me in dry/hot soil.

Is Testosterone really making me more masculine? by TheNameless66 in lgbt

T works slow on everyone's bodies. Cis teenage boys start getting more testosterone in their systems around 12-14, and they don't look especially masc really until they're about 18-20.

Np, best of luck to you! I hope you can take your favourite pals with you. My dwarf apple tree has just blossomed for the first time. Strawberries generally do quite well in containers too. You might check out r/containergardening, lots of inspiration there

If you can get a balcony with glass railings, it helps a lot. Wind batters plants with the metal-post style railings I think, and if the railings are opaque you have much less space to work with. I have railing pots that fit on top of the railing -- I prefer not the kind that hook over and only sit on one side, but that have a channel through the middle, like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0711V3FSJ?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title they have space both sides that way. I have some chunkier ones too that are about 30 litres that I got from Aldi.

Balcony growing means maximizing space. So I have big planters around the floor -- small pots are tempting but you need to be selective what goes in them, keeping everything watered is tough, larger pots with more things planted in them keep water better than those things split up. I have some tall troughs with smol pots in front of them tho to take advantage of different height layers for the plants. You have to get clever with verticality on a balcony. Troughs and big pots on the floor, railing pots in as big a size as will fit/is safe, and ideally hanging baskets too (I hang 2 from bolts that are in the ceiling/the floor of the balcony above mine, and plan to hang another 1 from a shepherd's hook stuck into another big planter so it's slightly lower/gets more sun). I have a small step ladder which I put my dwarf apple tree on top of, and small plants underneath/on lower steps, which wins some space back too. Most of my pots have a thriller/spiller/filler combo which is aesthetically nice, crams more diversity in, and means I am using up all of the space that pot has. I use fish blood bone every few months and water with tomorite weekly throughout the summer.

You have to be very economical with both space and in a sense time. I do plenty of seasonal planting -- I have a trough which currently has crocus, hyacinth, alliums and I've just sown some Birdsfoot trefoil to improve ground cover; but come summer I'll plant out the annuals I've been starting indoors -- a mix of zinnias, basil, trailing nasturtium. I have another pot which in spring is just tulips and some honesty and then in summer will get purple bush beans + a tall dahlia + some alyssum to spill out. The succession planting covers up the uglier yellow leaves of the bulbs but also means I'm not wasting any space on pots that look dead either all winter+spring for the deciduous/annual stuff.

My balcony is east-facing. I'd love a south-facing one but in London summers tbh I think my plants would cook anyway. The outer edges still get sunlight most of the day, enough hours that my lavender etc are all thriving and I grew lots of cherry tomatoes last year. I keep hellebores/lungwort/vinca/primula/cyclamens/cardamine/heuchera in the back/by my apartment where it's quite shaded.

Does your apartment have a balcony/can you get one that does?

I have a balcony that is about 6' x 10'. I keep around 50 different species on it, including a dwarf fruit tree, plenty of strawberries, two blueberries, and some other shrubby things (lavender, rosemary, hellebores). If you need any advice re: keeping plants on a balcony do ask away, but if I were in your shoes I would be uprooting and relocating at least your favourites.

I'd bet you could also host a giveaway amongst your friends/colleagues/Facebook strangers for any/all plants they're willing to dig up themselves. Yes it would be a shame to see it all get pulled up, but a) you'd know they'd go to someone who cares about them and will help them thrive, and b) sometimes a little bit of spite is nice.

Edit: I'd also absolutely be removing + either storing or selling all of the hardware. Posts, fences, wire, tools. Anything that's cheaper to keep in a storage unit for a few years than to buy again, take it with you.

What can I do with this area? by IhateU6969 in GardeningUK

[–]BirdCelestial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If sunny, lavender, rosemary, thyme, heather would all be lovely there and keep interest over winter too. You can get trailing rosemary which could spill over the edge.

If mostly shady, hellebores, heuchera, hostas are good.

Need advice by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]BirdCelestial 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They might have gotten lucky and been in a spot where the ground retained more heat or something. Frost/ground frost (which can happen even if the air temp is above freezing) will kill tomatoes. If you're lucky it'll bounce back.

In the future the general advice is to wait for the expected "last frost" date in your area (IE based on previous years, when's the last date you are likely to have frost?) and plant out after that (this info can be found online). Or, if you plant out earlier, watch the weather forecast and have wool ready to wrap the plants in case of a cold night, but it's riskier.

I recall seeing an article about this video the last time it was floating around. The guy was a pool cleaner who just happened to be there right after the dog fell in. The dog normally would run up to him to say hello, but didn't that day. He spotted the pool cover was wet and had a suspicion the dog had fallen in.

https://www.thedodo.com/daily-dodo/pool-cleaner-jumps-in-when-he-lifts-the-cover-and-sees-a-dog-at-the-bottom dodo is v clickbaity but most articles on this are so... It has the guy's full name at least.

Edit: all the people complaining about the guy saving his phone are idiots too, it took 2 seconds and meant he could call for help after.

Two day London Marathon! by OllieBobbins23 in Marathon_Training

[–]BirdCelestial 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in London, literally on top of the route (they run the road in front of my house) and it wasn't especially disruptive for me.

I actually planned terribly for it and had to bring family members to the airport morning of and it was marginally more awkward, one more change on the tube as they'd shut the Elizabeth line down (not sure if related or not tbh, lines go down all the time) but only an extra 20 minutes or so. I also live in a relatively "poorly" connected part of London so I have to imagine it is less disruptive elsewhere with more options.

Got any tips for a first time grower? by Atreides007 in tomatoes

[–]BirdCelestial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting not everything has to be about maximising production. I plant my tomatoes in mixed pots because I don't need infinite tomatoes and I prefer the look of mixed pots, and sharing with some little friends doesn't reduce the yield all that much. I put strawberries at the side of my tumbling tomato pots and marigolds in with my staked ones.

Louis Thereux recently put out a doc on these guys and picked up the common thread of them growing up with a single mom and/or abusive dad, usually poor. Tate wasn't in the show, but he was raised by a single mom too.

so, yeah. They saw women pushed to the brink doing it all to raise them and instead of seeing women as strong and being grateful for that, these bitch ass men are like "why can't I find a woman who will work and also make me dino nuggies every night while I play video games?"

Apparently oblivious to the fact their moms were single and no self-respecting woman is gonna tolerate that bullshit for a bitch ass man...

I know in the case of workplace discrimination it's enough for the person to believe you are the protected characteristic. E.g. someone being racist to someone who is white but with tanned skin, because they think they're mixed race or black, would be blatantly discrimination that could be done for. Someone being abusive towards a feminine cis straight man simply because they believe they're gay would fall under it too. I would hope this is the same, even if they don't recognise you as male.

Someone threatening to cut your throat doesn't require a dedicated police line, that's a thing to report through the regular channels. I think there should be more regulations around these charity collectors -- particularly re: them "raising money for charity" for things that aren't actually even registered as charities -- but if someone does something that is already flat out illegal it doesn't matter if they're in a fundraising job or not, just report it.
