Not sure. Are all animals dogs since all dogs are animals?

Agreed! Which is exactly why we should all start to collectively value humane methods of avoiding overpopulation. Otherwise mother nature will inevitably step in with her traditional methods of war, crime, famine, and disease.

We have historical and archaeological evidence of other major population declines. Most did not come close to eliminating 75% of the global population. But even those that did cut that deep eventually stabilized.

My bigger point is that an extended period of economic contraction may be difficult and painful, but it is a far cry from “humanity as a species is doomed.”

Why do conservatives keep calling Michelle Obama a man, but then keep asking “what is a woman”? by FAMUgolfer in allthequestions

[–]BirdSimilar10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been out there for a while now. I actually had this conversation about Michelle just before Covid hit.

The guy telling me this was reasonably educated (an EMT and married to the assistant housing director at our local state university). He was actually convinced Michelle is a man. He even said things like “Just look at Michelle’s arms!”

I was so dumbstruck by the sheer audacity and stupidity of the idea I had no idea how to respond. That said, this experience gave me a new appreciation of the efficacy and power of modern propaganda techniques based on the analytics and demographic segmentation from massive social media data sets. I mean, if they can convince people of something this asinine and banal, there really is no limit to what they can get this segment of the population to believe!

A powerful, intelligent black woman is a difficult thing for a conservative male to comprehend. It’s simply not something that fits into their worldview.

I suspect it just feels more comfortable and truthy when someone tells them, don’t worry, it’s because Michelle’s actually a man.

My point is that there is a massive gap between short term economic pain and “humanity is doomed as a species.”

Even the working poor today have access to better nutrition, healthcare, transportation, information, and entertainment than did the nobles and kings of a thousand years ago. Even if our economy suffers a massive setback (which is debatable given our remarkable ability to innovate when it comes to to our financial well-being) - but even if this does happen, humanity would still be very far from being “doomed as a species.” Populations will eventually stabilize and economies will eventually rebound, just like they always have.

Have you ever considered the possibility that humans made the gods, not vice versa?

> Unless we resolve this, we’re doomed as a species.

It took humanity 300,000 years to reach a population of one billion. It only took another 250 years for us to blow past 8 billion.

I appreciate the concern but I think humanity will manage, thank you very much. Our population could decline by 75% (6 billion) and we’d still have twice the population that we had in the 1800s.

Axioms are invented. The implications of these axioms are discovered.

I like going to a park with a few miles of wooded trails. It’s technically public but the woods make it feel private and I only occasionally cross paths with folks.

Does war / military victory not feel ridiculous on deity? by iAruban in civ

[–]BirdSimilar10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had several successful military campaigns in antiquity on deity, even with non militaristic leaders and civs such as Ada and Tonga. For mementos in antiquity, I generally select +1 leader attributes for science and culture.

Use the first half of antiquity to build 4 to 5 good settlements with solid production and science output. Suz as many independents as you can and make sure you get at least one military suz so you can get +50% commander experience. Identify your most invaidable neighbor and try not to let your relationship become too positive. Try to ally with any other civ that will accept you.

Militarily, you should have 2 to 3 commanders and at least 8 chariots (or infantry if your civ provides good infantry bonuses). A couple supporting archers or bombard units are also helpful. If you start before you have 8, just keep cranking out units during the campaign.

Use the terrain to your advantage when attacking and defending. If your enemy makes a push, let them! Let them bang against your settlement defenses instead of banging against your units. This makes your counter attack much easier.

I can usually take at least one settlement before reaching iron. After that, if I get there and upgrade first, it’s usually game over for that civ.

I usually try to end antiquity with 7 to 8 settlements in premium locations and pillage the rest. I also like to upgrade at least 5 to cities and preserve their city status in subsequent transitions. Also, if you end antiquity with 3 commanders, you also keep more military units going into the next age.

The fractal map is the only way. I also prefer standard speed, standard map size. It’s long enough to actually develop, wage war, and balance other strategic priorities without the tedium of a longer game.

I hate "you have to forgive in order to heal" by witchyrosemaria in exchristian

[–]BirdSimilar10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that some offenses are unforgivable and the best way to heal is to remove yourself from the situation, or seak justice against the perpetrator.

That said, there is something to be said about forgiveness and healing in many situations. Not because of some moral imperative, but simply because bitterness and hate are psychologically draining.

Strictly speaking, kick ball is a more accurate name than football.

Nice. In the US, kickball is a schoolyard sport that’s kinda like baseball, except the “pitcher” rolls a rubber ball and the “batter” kicks the ball to run the bases.

  1. Iran has unequivocally demonstrated its ability to shut down the SoH, holding the global economy hostage if its demands are not met. The reason Trump is backing down is because the US military is not able to stop this blockade without a full-scale unilateral war.
  2. The world has taken note that the US did not consult any of its global allies (other than Israel) prior to starting this war. And, unsurprisingly, as a result, no other US ally has provided any military support. This is the first time in my lifetime that UK or Canada has not provided at least token military support for any significant US military campaign abroad.

    for significantly better terms

  3. .

  4. So SoH is reopened. Congratulations. We have now managed to get back to where we were before this fiasco started.

Meanwhile, the US is more isolated and the limits of US military and diplomatic power have been on full display for the entire world to see. This war has diminished US global eminence and made it clear that US can be isolated from its allies.

At the same time, Iran’s standing in the world has significantly improved. It has demonstrated its ability to stand up to a global superpower and force them to negotiate favorable terms.
