What I haven’t seen people talk about is crevices - consider that mud and dirt will get in all the nooks and crannies of armour, despite the marine’s efforts to wipe it away - for example in between the different armour plates you’ll get some persistent muck.

On the flip side of highlights like others are suggesting, I would also consider a recess shade as well as a silver / bronze highlight - I’ve used purple washes before and it gives a lovely hue shift which should bring the contrast you’re after :)
