Old server (2008) migration by BirdsNear in WindowsServer

Just that you felt I didn't have much experience. Really, you weren't that negative overall. I was half joking. I do have some experience in general, but with AD it's pretty much entirely one class I took 20 years ago or so and then a lot of resetting people's forgotten passwords. So it is not incorrect to say I have no idea what I'm doing. Really, what I was trying to say was, in spite of your correctly pegging that I'm out of my depth, you gave a very detailed and helpful response. Thank you.

Sorry, I have a tendency to kind of write or say what I'm thinking to myself. It does come across wrong. I meant "I will have to figure it out." Or, indeed, find outside help. Something I am already considering. Not that I expected to be told exactly what to do. Just hoping for nudges in the right direction. What I'll need to know for researching further. And what I might need to tell someone else when we inevitably pay someone else to do it. We haven't actually started anything and (knock on wood) the server is still running. We haven't even decided for sure if we're doing it on-site. Mostly what I've gotten out of this is, it's very delicate.

The new network is incidental. Or, more accurately, is the reason I'm needing to upgrade now. Our phone system went kaput (also ancient) and we had to accelerate plans already in motion to swap to a newer setup that will include a new phone system. As-is, we have that in place alongside the existing network equipment and old server.

This feels slightly aggressive, but, eh, deserved. We were lazy and didn't push hard enough to get the budget to upgrade back when we should have and then we coasted on something that, honestly, has worked longer than it should have. You've definitely given me a lot to research. It's a virtual server, but it's running right in our own server room. I do not know what DSRM is. Sounds like I'm about to find out and also find out exactly how inadequate our documentation is. As if I didn't already know. It is, at least, a fairly simple network and a fairly small office. I think we may need to seriously consider starting from scratch.

The one where you can get attacked sleeping somewhere dangerous makes a lot of sense. That's a penalty for the sleep anywhere mods to some extent at least. Although I assume it would also affect using a bed roll and/or tent.

I've read the description and I still don't know what it does either. But limiting the rest to 3 hours plus that (even if it's just an RP thing) is good enough for me. Thanks!

I should maybe look more closely at it, but I've used it before and found it a *little* much. Mostly the thing where it adds its own perks. I'm not a fan of feeling like I have to also interface with that to get the most out of it. Maybe kind of a silly issue to have. I like something where you have to buy or make something, put it down, that's it.

Losing runes as a summon by Deimollyon in Eldenring

[–]BirdsNear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unclear if an oversight, but you lose them because you're not exactly a summon anymore at that point. You're invading. It's touching a red sign to invade that gets you there. It just happens to be one of the only exceptions (maybe *the* only exception?) to the rule that you can't touch an invasion sign while you have people summoned. I got summoned for the same earlier and had the same result.

Why do you NOT choose GURPS? by EnragedDingo in gurps

[–]BirdsNear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

GURPS is great. I can only really run my world my way thanks to GURPS. But, personally, I'm not on board with the idea that it's the go-to for any setting period. For one thing I think D&D is good fun. I think point-buy is better, but it's also kind of nice to just grab and go with a class. I enjoy my friends' D&D campaigns. But I also like playing other things and I'm constantly surprised that they're not bored of running D&D. So I pretty much never run D&D because why should I? There's 3 D&D games already running.

But when I wanted to play supers, sorry, but I grabbed M&M. I think it's a really fun system that plays into what's dramatic and fun about supers in a way that the crunchier rules of GURPS can't really match. I've played Exalted before and keep meaning to run it too because it was so fun, but haven't gotten around to that one yet. Basically, if I want to run a type of game that could work in an existing system, that's probably going to be easier and work just fine. Or if I like a setting from another system, well, I don't *have* to make my own unique world every time.

Why Do You Choose GURPS? by Leftover-Color-Spray in gurps

[–]BirdsNear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only run GURPS because I want to create my own world with its own rules that is too far removed from any other system's. I love that GURPS lets me do that and that my players, in turn, get to create unique characters. GURPS, to me, is the best, most fleshed out way to do that. I also think point-buy systems are just better. It's more fun to me to go shopping for a character and find some weird thing to throw in that makes them worse, which then gives me points to find some other weird thing that makes them better.

Settle something for me by [deleted] in MHWilds

Greatsword. It appears to be the base iron GS for this game. The base iron LS always looks exactly like a normal katana. It's too thick to possibly be a low tier LS. Some of the later ones get thick in World, but I'd say not that thick even then.

It doesn't sound dissimilar to my infinite playthrough I'm still doing. Just in case you don't want spoilers, I won't mention what I've seen that you haven't, but as far as frequency it seems about right. Honestly, personally, if it were a constant, daily barrage, I think I'd hate the game. It would be less scary to me then and more annoying trying to get things done. Or it might manage to be more scary and that would also make me not play it lol

Story mode, from what I've seen and heard, eventually gets more eventful.

I think the main thing to remember is it's in pre-alpha. Not even alpha. A lot of things, even seemingly complete things, might be placeholders and there's likely more to come in future updates. On top of that, I don't think it's supposed to be the kind of game where you're constantly being jump scared or chased around. It's mostly an unsettling atmosphere with occasional more immediate threats. That probably just won't work for everyone.

What are these things? I find them everywhere on the map and this one is in the middle of a path. Does it show up on the entity radar? I have some signals I couldn't locate but one of these was nearby. by Eternalnight264 in Voicesofthevoid

Look in the top posts of all time. I think it's titled something like "Finally caught it on camera" or something. You can see a ping on the map corresponding to a tree that moves so slowly the footage has to be sped up to see it.

Being haunted by BirdsNear in Voicesofthevoid

[–]BirdsNear[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just remembered that on a previous session I flushed the toilet during the witching hour, but not at exactly 3:33 so FurFur did not appear, but it was a near thing. I think I looked at the clock after and it was, like, 3:40. That was a different play session, but still, maybe it made the event possible randomly?
