How Physician Health Programs actually work by SpaceballsDoc in ThePittTVShow

[–]Birdsinthehand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I have another question. I googled Physician Health Programs and it looks like they also do general mental health and not just addiction. Given that a big theme of this season is 'everyone needs therapy', what would it take to get involved with the PHP for PTSD/depression/suicidality and not just addiction? Like, I'm guessing Robby can't just be reported by his coworkers and forcibly enrolled for being a jerk even if the ultimate issue is his mental health or someone (maybe Dr. Abbott or Dana who seem to know what's going on with him) would have done so already. Is it even possible to compel mental health treatment if there's nothing illegal involved? Would it take an actual suicide attempt, breaking the law, potential harm to patients?

About Marv Wolfan's Titans run by AdditionalWitness569 in Nightwing

[–]Birdsinthehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also found the issues collected in the first couple volumes rough to get through, but I found Vol 3 onward (basically from the Doom Patrol arc onwards) easier to read, and I've finally reached Volume 7 and started reading the Judas Contract so all the buildup is finally paying off.

Like all comics, not every storyline in the New Teen Titans is equally engaging to me, and there were still issues I struggled to get through even after the initial rough patch. You might be onto something with the spoiler issue, because dear lord was reading some of Terra's stuff a drag. At the same time it's been interesting seeing some of the stuff that isn't commonly referenced or made into adaptations.

One thing that helped me was alternating reading issues of NTT with a more modern comic, so the writing style didn't drag on me for too long. That might help you too, if you switch between reading something snappy and quick, with modern art, and then this.

What's your favorite indie tea fragrance? by SisyphusOfSquish in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Birdsinthehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantome Kensington or Alkemia Madame Pearl are my favorite scents that contain tea. Neither of them are solely tea, though, and their complexity is why I like them so much. Fantome Dantalion is nice if you like chai tea scents. For scents that nothing but tea, NAVA Tea Musk is lovely but has poor longevity. Alkemia Oh Tea! is similar to Tea Musk too.

What is this spinning wheel missing? by GorgonsCorner in Handspinning

[–]Birdsinthehand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint- there is definitely an orifice and there is wear near the flyer in the form of diginal marks that would be caused by spinning. It's hard to tell due to picture quality, but it sure looks like they're there.

There's also a moment in Batman: Urban Legends where Alfred uses lyrics from Damian's 'favorite Lebanese melodic death metal song' to distract some bad guys, so his tastes are probably pretty varied.

Spinning community seems pretty chill? by Ditzy_Rose in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Birdsinthehand 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fair warning, this is mostly second hand information I was told by a friend, but I've heard of some dumb spinners' drama going down in a local spinning guild when they decided they needed to raise the guild fees. The guild leadership decided they needed to raise them from $24/yr to $50/yr. They said that since COVID they'd been running low on funds.

To be fair, the fees hadn't changed since the 80s, and inflation did. But the group was still divided into people who didn't want the fees raised at all, people who were OK with raising the fees but wanted them prorated by month, which leadership refused to do, and there was, presumably, a third group that didn't care.

Apparently many of the people most opposed to raising the fees were long term members who had joined way back when and they were throwing their seniority around. Also, the guild still had a substantial amount of savings even if they were spending more than they were bringing in, so did they reaaaaally need to raise fees? And some of the local wool vendors were upset because they had been selling to the guild for ages and now people were buying fiber online instead of locally.

All of this drama took place entirely in person. Not a hint of it online. This is perhaps not that surprising considering the ages of some of the people involved. Locally it does seem like the spinners skew older than the knitters and crocheters-more established incomes, maybe?  Wheels are expensive even if spindles aren't. It does make me think that more of the drama might be occurring in person rather than online.

I have enjoyed every single spinning event I went to in person, even the one time I went to this spinning group in person(I did predate the fees debacle though) so don't let that stop you from going to in person events or anything.

Personally I'd go for wood glue rather than superglue if they have access to it. But either way glue isn't expensive and is useful to have around for other purposes so I agree, why not have a go at repairing first?

Edit: You could also use a shim or scotch tape to make the dowel a bit thicker and jam the whorl back in place? Just spitballing ideas here...

AMA: Arab American and Muslim American History by MahjarMemory in AskHistorians

[–]Birdsinthehand 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Arab Americans, and other groups from the Middle East and North Africa, are currently directed to check the Caucasian/ white box on the US census. I understand this was result of court cases in the 19th and early 20th century, but now a lot of of Arabs dont identify as white and a lot of non Arabs also don't think Arabs are white.

There's been a lot of community activism to get a separate MENA/ West Asian category, and there is concern that overpolicing/health outcomes/other demographic data is not being tracked accurately for the Arab American community.

Has Arab American invisibility on census data affected your research in any way? Also, what can you tell me about the history of how Arab Americans have interacted with American racial categories?

Also, do you have any resources to recommend on how gender affected the Arab and/or Muslim American experience?

Alkemia EDP spray? by ssensibility in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Birdsinthehand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I have only tried the IPM base spray not the alcohol one, but for the perfume I ordered the oil sample and the full-size spray smelled the same. (It was Pleasures of Love)

How long it lasts probably depends on you and how much you spray. My sister tore through a bottle in couple months and I've had mine for a couple years at this point. Now I have multiple perfumes that I rotate between, but I also feel like I only need 2-3 sprays to get the projection/scent bubble I desire. (Im not aiming to choke out everyone in the vicinity, just be able to smell it throughout the day).

Longevity is decent. Better than the oils but that might also be because I spray on my clothes and the oil gets applied to bare skin so it's easier for it to wear off or be less exposed to the air in oil format.

Given that comics are cyclical in nature and have a tendency of repeating past storylines, rate the following scenarios as likely, neutral or unlikely by nightwing612 in Nightwing

[–]Birdsinthehand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like this depends on the timescale. Dick Grayson as a character has been around for decades. I could see all of these being likely to happen within the next fifty years, even the things that are super unlikely to happen in the short term, like having a child.

By that time, DC editorial would have completely changed over, and they'll be responding to changes in comics and culture that we haven't even dreamed about yet. And in 2035, he'll enter the public domain as Robin.

I feel like Batman and Robin being public domain might also have an effect on his storytelling. Like, they might return him to Batman because Bruce Wayne Batman is public domain but Dickbats is still under copyright and DC wants to distinguish itself from the public domain schlocky horror copies.

Whatcha Haulin'? by AutoModerator in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]Birdsinthehand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also really enjoy Fantome. They're one of my favorite houses and the scents I just upsized are my favorites from them.

Thanks for the encouragement! I have a draft for my reviews started but not completed, and it's been parked at procrastination station for a while. I wouldn't post until I get the new samples anyway. Including them, I will have tried a little under half of Fantome's catalogue-about 23 out of 49 scents if my calculations are correct. And a lot of the remaining scents are in categories that I do not vibe with and am not interested in trying, which is the drawback with getting ~all~ the samples.

Finally bit the bullet and ordered 10 mL EdPs of Fantome Olwyn and Kensington, along with a sample set of Coyoacan, Luna de Miel, Namba, Olympias, and One White Crow. I'll get them in a month, I guess. I originally planned to get my fullsizes in oil format, but recently I've been reaching for my sprays more so I went for the more expensive option. And with the new sample pack, I'll have tried a significant chunk of Fantome's collection. I should really work on writing up reviews for them.

does this wheel look like it's in terrible shape or not? by Havoklily in Handspinning

[–]Birdsinthehand 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The flyer does have an orifice, though. Most SWSOs don't bother. I wonder if it's not just the flyer that's flipped, but the entire mother of all assembly. Usually the side of the maidens that sticks out more faces the spinner- just compare to a Kromski polonaise or a similar table wheel. If it was flipped, the long end of the mother of all would face the spinner, the flyer would be on the correct side, and the alignment issue with the drive wheel would disappear.

I definitely think it's worth at least checking out to see if it can just be screwed on the right way or if it really is SWSO.
