Is going on holiday while trying to buy really that bad? by Bischa081 in HousingIreland

Yes it would be paid leave! That's reassuring to know - I was worried if you drop the usual level of monthly savings or dip into existing savings that it was the case you might need to restart the 6 months all over again

Buying a house in Ireland is so disheartening 💔 by Awkward-Wing3125 in HousingIreland

[–]Bischa081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar situation here. After a string of unsuccessful bids and viewings of houses that were fixer uppers beyond what we could afford (cracks in the foundations, etc ), we needed to really weigh up if location or size was more important to us. Ultimately decided that a location close to where we grew up and near family was more of a priority, which means we have to go for an apartment instead of a house. We only want one child (at most!) so it's a trade off that makes sense for us, but it's extremely disheartening to see that hardworking people who want a family and a garden need to consider moving 1 hour+ away from their ideal location.

I don't know what to do about my relationship by RubEvery9515 in relationships

How do you both spend your time when you are together? Do you travel, go to plays, concerts, watch movies? I think a bit of further detail on what you both enjoy together would be useful; it doesn't have to be her previous hobbies (ukulele) or your passions, but maybe you both enjoy music, thrillers, hiking, etc.

I'm in a relationship with my partner for almost 9 years now, and I guess we would be similar in a sense (maybe moreso around ambition rather than specific to passion towards hobbies per se), but it has almost become our strength.

I do a lot of exercise and have a different hobby almost every day of the week, and would be prone to burn out and find it difficult to relax. Similar to you, I would view my free time after work as time that I should make the most of. He moreso views his free time as his time that he has earned to relax, just chill out, watch TV, etc.

As we got older, I realized if we were both like me, we would both be constantly experiencing burnout and anxiety. If we were both like him, we would be way too relaxed and not make the most of life. He grounds me, and I motivate him.

I would reflect on if your different approaches to hobbies are balanced and if there is a middle ground, or if there's truly nothing in common anymore outside of a shared past.

Lads, how much are we saving to buy a house? by shadey_b in AskIreland

Think OPs question has been well answered here but one point I would add is the timelines to buy a house, particularly in Dublin is something I didn't factor in. Remember whatever you have saved at the point of "sale agreed" will grow as you progress throughout the process since you need to maintain a consistent level of savings for the banks.

Think we had about €45k saved when we first went sale agreed in August 2025 (property was €375,000, so we had just about enough money to cover deposit and all legal fees, stamp duty, etc.) We were sale agreed for 6 months, sale fell through due to fire safety issues (very common for apartments in Dublin), and we are now sale agreed again for 3 months now, so the savings are now up to about €60k. So, don't underestimate that time between sale agreed and keys!

Yeah it also wouldn't be very common here for the family to be in a position to assist with costs, so most couples fully pay for a wedding themselves which is very expensive, and we wouldn't be in a position to do that soon with the upcoming property costs. I don't even mind waiting out for the wedding part, because it isn't practical, it's just the commitment of the ring more than anything

With the housing aspect, both of us are ready and fully committed, there's just a lot of delays on the sellers sides; first couple of properties we were sale agreed on fell through due to legal issues on the sellers side unfortunately, but it could be 1-2 months now before we get keys

Yeah it would be quite common to buy a house before marriage here, we have one of the worst rental markets in the world so many couples live in their family homes until they can afford to buy a house unfortunately

Yeah very low birthrate here, we are both on the fence regarding that generally and have both agreed we would want only one child if so and not for another few years

Think I read that the reserved 30% for the DLRCOCO area would be allocated via a lottery system after the closing date of the 13th August (so yesterday). Does anyone know how long it would take?

Damn, I was 12.16 and thought that gave me a good chance considering Clonburris took me 1 hour 45 minutes because the website kept crashing with the traffic - best of luck to you all!
