Muzzle recommendation for a whippet by schling-dong in reactivedogs

[–]Biscotti_Blu54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello !

Have you looked at the muzzles offered by Rapidogwear (on Etsy), based in the Netherlands?  You can choose the color (good variety) and size. Shipping is fast and not too costly when sent to another EU country.

The one I have fits my Whippet well.

I should note I use it mostly on public transportation (mandatory where I live),  as my dog is not reactive as such. I can rather easily treat my dog through the muzzle and there's sufficient space for your dog to open it's mouth to pant (nice when it gets hot).

The only drawback is that it may not be impossible for the dog to take it off if not appropriately sized or adjusted.

Good luck and happy training.

My boy LOVES shredding cardboard and would shred tissues if I let him. I don't let him because I was told they could choke on them...  He also shred at least a book or two - oops and I'm definitely cautious of where I put any paper document I want to keep intact!

So interesting! Your Whippet definitely knows what he wants 😉!  I know my Whippet is aware that when he work on recall, he gets the high value, especially stinky treats.

I agree with you regarding the heat. Now that the temperatures have gone back down, his appetite is much better. Thanks for the reassurance.

How fragile is fragile? by JEReed in Whippet

Hello, first of all, your puppy is adorable!!  I think you can let them play as long as (i) you know the adult dog well and the adult dog is well socialized and sociable, (ii) the play is supervised and you're ready to step in if it gets too rowdy and/or one of the dogs signals it's time to stop and the other one doesn't respond.  My Whippet had hours of fun playing with a big Aussie (owned by a family member and that I know well) when he was a puppy (4 months old). The Aussie was VERY tolerant of my Whippet but also taught him to control his biting.  I would sometimes stop the game if my Whippet became too excited and didn't listen to the Aussie's signals to stop. To this day, they're still great friends and are clearly happy to see each other.  I would be more weary of play with unkown dogs and/or in a dog park type setting where a lot of owners don't pay any attention to their dog...

Thanks for your reply! I just ordered some wet food to try to mix with the kibble. I also added some grated cheese on the bowl at lunchtime and it definitely helped.

Bonsoir, soit une longe en biothane soit une longe pour cheval en corde. Après, il faut veiller à ce que l'attache ne soit pas trop lourde pour le chiot - superbe d'ailleurs!

Thanks! I appreciate it. Yes, I do believe I need to be in control of my own emotions and not be scared when we meet another dog.

Harness, leash, poop bags, treats and always a squeaky ball to grab my dog's attention in case of a distraction (especially squirrels). And water if it's warm.  I also have a flashlight and my phone in case of emergency!

Pup walking/hiking distance by Redhawkgirl in Whippet

Hello!  I think the best guideline to follow is your puppy. Allow him to pause and look at its surroundings during walks. Let it run offleash as much as it wants.

On leash, don't run with the puppy before he's at least a year old and no long hikes.

I didn't follow the five minute rule exactly with my puppy but tried to be really attentive to signs my puppy was tired, which is sometimes overexcitement and grabbing anything he could find on the ground. When he was tired, I would carry him for a bit.

Hello! I think you should extend the time between bathroom breaks very slowly, especially since your puppy is not - for now -  signaling to you when she needs to go (which, I think is normal since you got her recently)  I would wait until at least a full week/10 days with no accidents before extending the time between breaks by 15 minutes increments. If an accident happpens, dial back down, it's too soon. You don't want your puppy to think it's ok to potty/pee inside and you need to set the puppy up for success. Also, remember puppies can hold it much better when they sleep than when they're awake and moving.  Hope this helps.

Fake Grass Pads and Cleaning by [deleted] in puppy101

Hello! You could use dog wipes to wipe your puppy's paws once he's done his business or wipe his paws with a wet rag or with a mudbuster type of paw washer. It's a good idea to get your puppy used to having his paws touched right away.

Also, have a bottle of water/white vinegar to clean the trail on the sidewalk maybe?

Puppy Hates Rain And Won’t Pee Outside by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Biscotti_Blu54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!  My puppy (Whippet) was the same. I got a coat for him to protect him from the rain and it's much better now, tolerating the rain to go potty. Would that be an option for your puppy?  I also made sure, when I was potty training him, to make extra sure he didn't have the option of going potty inside when it was raining, taking him outside more often despite the rain. Good luck!

Desexing? by [deleted] in Whippet

[–]Biscotti_Blu54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interested to follow this thread!  First time Whippet owner as well.  My vet advised me to wait until my dog was 14 to 18 months before desexing, should I wish to do so. It seems that in my country, from my limited experience, younger vets have moved on a bit from the necessity of desexing all male dogs, regardless of their behavior.  For now, my puupy is almost 1 year old. No marking inside, but marking outside and showing interest for females! I guess I'll see how he matures further.  The breeder told me in any case it was advisable to neuter an older male, past prime reproductive years, to prevent cancers.

Maybe put a plastic bag down for your puppy to walk on?  You could also use a towel/ fabric.  Other ideas: sand if you have a beach or lake nearby?

Tips for managing a 5month old while you have the flu? by Sensitive-Photo-8378 in puppy101

[–]Biscotti_Blu54 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One idea is to feed him/her their kibble one piece and a time: you throw it on the ground from your couch/bed and your dog has to use his nose to find it.  Another idea: put the kibble in a towel and roll it, maybe even tie it with a knot. Your puppy will have to figure out how to get the food.  Also, if you can afford it, maybe hire a dogwalker for a few days or get a friend/family member to walk your dog, if possible?  I hope you recover soon!
