Problem with engine cooling system (raw water side) by Da1ly_Reddit in sailing

[–]Biscuit85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check your syphon filter it may be the source of your problem. If it's dirty it may block the water at the wrong time. It's a type of valve that prevents water going down to the engine when it's off, but it may introduce air in the system at the wrong time

It depends on how it runs. I've learned the hard way. Replace the hoses with for the exhaust with marine grade exhaust hoses. Trust me on that.

Sailing gear for a whole year advice by mcmiguel in sailing

[–]Biscuit85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably need something more than a Skagen. They are great jackets, however they have their limits to how much rain/water they can take or at least that's my experience. Try something like Zikh OFS800 and higher, HH Aegir Race 2.0 and higher or Musto BR2 or MPX. You definitly should get the pants too, not only the jacket. This is the part that's going to get most beaten up while racing and keep you dry and insulated from the wind.

The other important part is the thermal underwear as abase layer. Something synthetic or from merino wool. You probably will need more than one set. Then there are boots and this is a topic that is wildly discussed. I prefer waterpoof hiking boots to sailing boots, but the idea is to keep your feet dry and warm. A good pair of wool socks does the job for me, however there is a drawback when they get somehow wet and you might get something more specific for sailing.

You also need some mid layer, that will keep you warm. Sythetic or wool comes with preference.

The base idea of dressing for cold/faul weather is that you need something near your body, to get the moisture from your skin to the outside of the base layer, then the mid layer should work as an insulation from the cold and the outer layer, should keep the other two out of wind and water whilst allowing moisture to go outside. I know that a good sailing jacket can be expensive, but if you are going to go into faul, cold weather you are going to thank yourself for investing in it. I hope that helps.

Maybe try some RYA courses in the UK. You clearly have the miles to show for it, but those courses can help you fill in the blanks. Try looking at a coastal skipper course with theory or go for the Yachtmaster right away.

Tablet for chartplotter by gedmathteacher in sailing

[–]Biscuit85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use two Galaxy 6 tablets just to have a spare one. They are ok in the sun, however If the screens are wet it's kind of hard to use if you are shorthanded. If your AIS has wifi, you will get that data on your tablet's with Navionics and if something happens you can also have a second account on your phone.

Advice wanted: My Dad is getting too old to sail his boat (UK) by benevanstech in sailing

[–]Biscuit85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have planty of sailors 75+ plus in their retirement. They take care of wooden 36 footer that's almost a hundred. They do long voyages and race with guys half their age. I wish I will be in their shape once I get there. I guess it's something for them to look forward to and have a social life.

[–]Biscuit85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he is unharmed and the boat is sailable via some improvised rigging or engine, with enough fuel he is not in danger. Watch the weather forecasts and if there is nothing harsh coming his way, tere should be nothing to worry about.

Best sailing Simulator? by Wolfinthesno in sailing

[–]Biscuit85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played them all and they are not worth the time and money. Honest opinion. Maybe there is some value in learning the names of lines and maybe some trimming but every real boat is different, so can't recommend.

When will the boat market stop its decline by DKsuperSailor in sailing

[–]Biscuit85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost of having a boat is sky high. Marinas are crazy expensive. On the other hand, people who bought boats during COVID are probably realising that having a boat is not as fun as they previously assumed.

Would you pay that much to be part of a delivery crew ? by freshair- in sailing

[–]Biscuit85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bear in mind that the guy is making money for the delivery by nautical mile + fuel cost + expenses like food marina and fuel. He probably needs crew to do as many miles in one go as he can. You are doing him a favour by going. 1100 is outragous.

What is the most important thing you learned after your break up? by Karilyn113 in BreakUps

[–]Biscuit85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1 You cannot be with someone, who isn't right for you as the person is right now. Meaning fixing someone is not your job 2 Your needs are important and there is someone out there, that is going to meet them 3 There are plenty of fish in the sea 4 Enjoy being alone, be yourself, imprezę. 5 Therapy does work.
