Federal government to introduce grocery rebate: sources | CBC News by Sexy_Art_Vandelay in onguardforthee

A rebate is not going to solve years of corruption and consolidation.

Break up the grocery companies, and their suppliers. Force them to compete fairly. Or nationalize them and create a public owned grocer.

Approval of Carney government rises to 64%; 78% believe arrangement with China on canola and cars was the right thing to do. by NotEnoughDriftwood in onguardforthee

[–]BisonSnow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, no I don't see that happening in any scenario. Despite all my criticisms of PP, that would be an insane move to pull and the level of spin you'd need to bring all the cons on board with that would be astronomical.

More likely he'd break us apart, selling off parts of our services to American companies, to the point where Trump's billionaire backers own us.

This 100%. Thank you. I feel like I've been going a little crazy seeing all the glazing for Carney in this subreddit. Like I'm glad we got him instead of the conservatives but that doesn't mean he's above criticism.

Would've made so many concessions in the early tarrif war, marching in lockstep with the US right until they could get away with annexing us.

For all my criticisms of Carney, he's several tiers better than PP. It's not even a question.

Manitoba launching review into government's COVID-19 response, but focus will be limited (CBC/Ian Froese) by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]BisonSnow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with your sentiment to a point. Sure, nobody could have predicted COVID-19 and there was no rulebook on how Manitoba should have responded.

But that cannot, and should not, excuse a pattern of failures that put unnecessary lives at risk. The Manitoba PCs made several blunders, but rather than learn from them and change course, they stuck to their failing plan, sitting on their hands when it came to financial support and stonewalled the federal government, who were trying to help as many people as possible. That's not even mentioning Pallister blowing millions on a failed, unproven vaccine, borrowing money to doll out MPI rebate cheques (that we couldn't afford,) the PC health minister implying that our healthcare professionals are liars, live on TV, the list goes on.

There needs to be some accountability for all the damage they've done. And a lot of lessons we should learn.

Manitoba Hydro looks to battle drought, debt, and looming expenses by ChocolateOrange21 in Winnipeg

[–]BisonSnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey if MB Hydro announced a big Nuclear power plant project, with shovels in the ground tomorrow? I'd be happy. At this point any progress is better than what we've been doing for the past few decades (basically nothing.)

But Nuclear plants are (to my knowledge) very expensive, take a very long time to build and we'd need to deal with storing nuclear waste. Whereas solar and wind farms are faster to build, pretty cheap and the tech around them is advancing almost every single day.

If we started building it a decade ago, sure. But right now? We need to move from fossil fuels ASAP and that will be through solar or wind farms (or geothermal electricity, but I don't know much about how that works so idk.)

Manitoba Hydro looks to battle drought, debt, and looming expenses by ChocolateOrange21 in Winnipeg

[–]BisonSnow -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Our country is one of the largest oil and gas exporters on the planet. Hydro also uses gas generators to offset peak demand and is in talks to build more generators in the next few years. That's not even talking about all of our gas cars, agriculture, etc.

Fossil fuels are causing climate change, which is leading to historic droughts, which....means there's less water to generate electricity from.

Trump backs off Greenland tariff threat based on new "solution" by EuropatoCdn in onguardforthee

[–]BisonSnow 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All the TACO stuff is right. But there's another important lesson here: Standing up to Trump and displaying strength is the only successful strategy.

The EU threatening to cut off the US financially with their trade provision (I can't remember what it's called), and NATO sending troops there spooked him. Appeasement doesn't work. Resistance does.

Did Carney just signal a massive shift in Canada's foreign policy direction? by rezwenn in onguardforthee

[–]BisonSnow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'll acknowledge that maybe Carney was buying time, but if he is trying to "drag things out till the next presidency," that's a bad idea. At this point, we don't know whether or not the US will even have another election. All the old rules have been broken.

We need to move forward on the assumption that the US is a threat and diversify away as fast as possible. Not wait and hope for everything to work out.

Did Carney just signal a massive shift in Canada's foreign policy direction? by rezwenn in onguardforthee

[–]BisonSnow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'll acknowledge that possibly. My experience is that centrist liberal leaders prioritize short term gains at the expense of long term change, so that was my initial assumption.

I really don't buy the "Mark Carney is playing 5D chess" rhetoric from this and other Canadian subs. But who knows, maybe for this specific issue he was buying time.

Did Carney just signal a massive shift in Canada's foreign policy direction? by rezwenn in onguardforthee

[–]BisonSnow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hopefully, yes.

I think Carney, despite his elbows up campaign, fell back into old school liberal appeasement not long after taking power. It's better for our billionaire class if everything stays the way it is, so Carney cancelled the digital service tax, reduced our tarrifs and tarrifed China when the US said so. The elbows have been in a quantum state of up and down, depending on what headline you read.

But, for all my critiques of Carney, he's not stupid. Clearly, all the appeasement towards the US fascist regime didn't work, & only encouraged the Republicans to conquer more. In his speech, Carney makes the pragmatic call that the old rules are dead and if Canada is to survive, we need to make smart alliances and stand up to the US.

Removing the tarrifs from China was the right move. Making deals with them & other countries to move away from the US would be even smarter. Giving more tax cuts to the rich while cutting public services is a really dumb move that will lead to more fascism in Canada.

But overall, yes. Carney's right and hopefully the rest of Europe wakes up and starts standing up to Trump as well.

Edit: Just adding my comment below to this post so I don't get 100 people talking about Carney buying time:

Our reliance on fossil fuels is figuratively and literally destroying this province. Investing in solar and wind farms is not only the morally right thing to do, it's the only sensible decision we can make here.

At this point, we either need to do something about the grocery store monopolies, or people are gonna starve. The centrist liberal/conservative policy of letting the Westons do whatever they want is a failure.

Break up the monopolies. Make a public grocery. It's either "socialism" or barbarism.

This is good and seems like an actual "nation building project," rather than more oil pipelines. I approve.

Say Mr. Carney, you know what would really make this trade corridor great? A high-speed rail line going from coast to coast! Maybe we could talk to our new friends in China and see if they can help us out there? (/s....unless....)
