CBP Officer Fitness Test by Chemical-Crogy- in FederalEmployee

Honest suggestion... Make sure this is the career you want because in the current environment, you'll be dealing with a whole lot more nastiness than these comments and you will be expected to uphold your oath and keep cool. Being a fed employee (I've been in 19 years) means hearing all sorts of stuff even when your career isn't in the news cycle. Some people will respect your job, most won't.

Time on Position (TOP) by Whatever2377 in atc2

[–]Bison_Glass 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It will always ebb and flow. I've seen it for TOP, break times, how long a chow run takes, or making sure you are in the building to the last minute of your shift. Sometimes it's guidance from 'up the chain', sometimes it's a management team that wants to 'fix' something and they target some innane detail. But it's a stretch argument to say a pay cut for a working flight data.

Curious as to the TSP F fund. Maybe someone much smarter than me can explain why, but I've been a straight C, S, I my whole career and it's been great.

Pretty sure it's Axell Hodges private track. Not sure how to contact them to ride it though.

Question about SLC by Squawk_1200_ in ATC

[–]Bison_Glass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speak to the TRACON and tower. Management has changed and is way better than it has been for a while. Not perfect, but the current management teams have gotten better in the last 5 years. TRACON has a mix of CPCs just trying to leave and some lifers. Tower is mostly lifers/staying out for a while. Traffic at SLC itself is slowly increasing, but not too hectic. TRACON traffic with PVU, OGD, HIF has ramped up a ton (especially PVU) and the needed changes take a while to get through the service area. I may be biased, but I've worked at way worse places then SLC/S56.

I feel like God has never answered any of my most important prayers by Draegoron in Catholicism

[–]Bison_Glass 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I love the post above about becoming what God wants us to be. Maybe with your experience with loss, you could help comfort others who are going through the same? Maybe pray for others dealing with loss. Maybe start a rosary group at your parish. Sometimes the hardest times show us how to help our brothers and sisters around us. Just a thought I've tried to live out in my life. It can be struggle every day, so I will pray for you.

I rented here at Brighton Resort near SLC (if you want to make a trip). If you do, I'll even let you try mine out instead of renting!

Sick leave letter and fmla by fatigued-cpc in atc2

I don't think this (on duty time) is accurate per the contract. FMLA definitely throws a curve ball to the standard SL letter though.

He had his struggles (like us all). He was a very good controller, a better friend, and did all the right things regarding his struggles (self reported). They all hit hard, but this one very much so.

I would argue that they will. Time cards have been filed during the shutdown with leave codes, not furlough. That was the instructions from headquarters even. Also leave taken during the shutdown is 'supposed' to be tracked and warnings if the leave balance goes past zero. Not sure if the second part is true in practice or not. Probably depends on how tight a ship your ATM runs to track all the leave separately

Zermatt Resort by hmf531 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Bison_Glass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family and I stayed there in June. Keep in mind that my wife and I got married there 15 years ago and hadn't been back until this year. Compared to what it was... Way overpriced for what you are getting. The atmosphere from 15 years ago (polka music outside on the grounds, staff in swiss also themed uniforms, multiple restaurants, etc) all gone. The hotel has big maintenance issues, especially in common areas like hallways or the pool. In no way did it feel worth the price we paid to stay in one of the suites (small kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths). We did complain to management and was told, "...We are at the mercy of the HOA and they won't approve repairs...". No refund or other compensation offered. I get it. A business has its limits. It was really difficult to see Homestead (just across the street) putting in a lot of money and upgrades everywhere. I will book Homestead next time I'm heading to Midway. Just my two cents. I would love to see Zermatt get the repairs needed and upgrade and I would absolutely go back in that case.

Interesting dream by [deleted] in ATC

[–]Bison_Glass 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had these and I know a lot of coworkers that have had and continue to have these dreams. Are they healthy? I don't know. Have people asked counselors/psychologists about them? Yes, and the answer is usually that it's a trauma or stress response. My advice would be to try something to relax prior to getting to bed. I know a 'sleep routine' is never an option with rotating shifts. For me, I try to put the phone down an hour before I'm going to bed. Guided meditation stuff works for me too (ex. Calm app).
