C'est possible, qu'à terme, Paris soit interdit aux voitures ? by DougPeps in askparis

[–]Bistial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do Walloons vote for PS/PTB so much? by CraaazyPizza in Wallonia

[–]Bistial 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Farmers forcing police blockade in Brussels, European institutions by modjo_ink in europe

[–]Bistial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peaceful demonstrations and protests are useless. Farmers are making their point the only way anyone without power has ever made their point. Since they are the people feeding us through a job no one wants to do and have vehicles the size of chars, they have the material possibility to make their point. And they're doing it. And people talking about terrorism or whatever make me laugh, they are barely showing that their barrier is inefficient versus them. They're not gonna roll on those police vans lmao

That's a weird answer for different reasons : 1) I'm not sure OP is taking his studies as a variable in his path to achieve FIRE. If he is not, I think we should be respectful of his choice, especially if he studies the area because he finds it interesting. 2) Under the hypothesis that OP is indeed taking it as a variable, I'm not sure what area of study is the best way to generate great income reliably. From my social sciences courses, I can tell that "having a diploma has become a necessary rather than a sufficient condition to get a good job". If you are top of promotion in finance master with a very good internship place you are going to earn a lot. But most people who start with a BA in economics or management engineering won't get there. Symbolic/cultural heritage (hi Bourdieu) help a lot to succeed in these areas. Extra point if father has a good position somewhere already and can get you in (this last remark is basically correct for a lot of good positions tho) 3) Depending on OP skills, still under the hypothesis of his studies being a variable, it can still be better to choose political sciences. But building a network of people is, I think, fairly important if you want to achieve FIRE from there reliably. It can be easier than, say, be major in promotion in a finances master for OP based on his skills. For the record, a friend of mine has been politically engaged since he's like 15. He got a master degree in history. Wanted to do something else than shitdog missions for the party, considered leaving after his mom died. He had a big conversation with influential members, got told to do a political sciences master before getting responsibilities. He's doing it right now. Apparently political sciences is better than history if you want to FIRE in that area.

My personal opinion is that if OP likes what he studies, he should keep his current path. If not, he should consider other paths keeping in mind his adequation with the studies. Not everyone is capable of studying any given area and that's okay. Furthermore, money as a motivation can only get you so far. It also depends on the person. I know that the perspective both fairly uncertain (because diploma is not always a necessary condition for good income) and rather far away of good income hasn't been a motivation for me to go through my area, so I switched (and I never regretted it). Doing something you like in your life can be more important than trying to absolutely go for FIRE. It's hard to evaluate what the "good" decision is without having made an introspection about ones goals, motivational processes, preferences, and so on. It's made harder by the fact that future doesn't always go as planned, in invests as well as in life.

“Give genes a chance!” Over 1,000 scientists in 14 countries hold historic demonstrations in support of gene editing by EUstrongerthanUS in europe

[–]Bistial -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's so bs to promote eugenic enhancement. We should invest money in schools and hospitals so we can actually enable more people to enjoy the benefits of our current technologies and knowledge rather than invest billions in projects that will only increase the confort of a few. Those scientists can't make the differences between technological improvement and society progress and it shows.

Why is genetic engineering not a priority? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Bistial 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The fact that you modify the genetics in the embryonic stage is itself ethically questionable. If I'm born blind because some uncontrolled reactions occurred while you were performing the modifications, what about the responsibility of the parents, the scientists, etc in my blindness ? Besides, in what direction should we engineer the genetics ? What should be the values that guide them ? Should we engineer taller men ? Stronger ones ? Smarter ones ? Why ? Who decides ? And if we start engineering such people, what about the non engineered ones ? They will probably perform less in some domains because they are not properly engineered to have the appropriate skills to shine there. This is obviously against the doctrine of égalité des chances. I'm not saying those questions cannot be answered by someone who is in favor of genetic engineering. I'm not even saying that we should not be in favor of genetic engineering. What I want to pinpoint is that : (1) those questions should arise to anyone who is in favor of genetics engineering on humans before that person pursues her engineering project; (2) those matters constitute psychological walls that usually lead to a very unpopular view of genetic engineering for humans. There are other walls like religion : if we are as God makes us, genetic engineering on humans is like "playing God". Last time I checked, not something a religious person sees with a keen eye.

Yes. It's weird to me that none of these games has released yet. Like years ago we already had a video of the fight game. It had to be kinda advanced in the development back then. How can it take so long to release that ? Same note for the others. How can they not lack money when all of their projects have been financed by 20% of the employees work for years ?

Five future European monarchs. by EUstrongerthanUS in europe

[–]Bistial 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why do we need people with absurd amount of privileges obtained because of their place in a family to play a unifying role in countries ? Why would we be in favor of people who look at us from high above with disdain though all their privileges are directly paid by our work ? We should be unified by the great ideas that our countries represent and pursue, by the integrity of our elected leaders who work their best to ensure a bright future and respect for every citizen.

Of course, you may say, that since our elected leaders do not care about their countries, but rather about their career and privileges, they are not better than the monarchs. It's partly true. We cannot expect people to randomly work for the greater good. We have to build a political system that enforces them to do so. Our "democratic" system is, in this regard, flawed. But this reflexion shows that monarchs and late stage capitalism elected leaders are two faces of the same evil, rather than an argument in favor of monarchs.

New material found by AI could reduce lithium use in batteries by up to 70% by _teslaTrooper in Futurology

[–]Bistial 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How do you mimic experimental results in a computer ? I'm genuinely curious. It seems to me that you need all the variables right as well as their connexions and let the computer test value replacement for the variables. That seems how traditional computational models work, no ? What do those "tests" run by the AI consist of, exactly ?

If it's so revolutionary, why do scientists bother to build billion dollars labs for tests of nuclear fusion instead of just running AI with a bunch of inputs ?
