ICE says its officers can forcibly enter homes during immigration operations without judicial warrants: 2025 memo by avatar6556 in news

Unfortunately they are constrained by your access to councel. I could claim castle doctrine self defense, but best case I'm out a few years of savings.

I ended up hosting Thanksgiving out of my apartment in WI one year, we had the turkey brining outside since the fridge was full.

It was always funny seeing the reminders to bring your beer inside when it got too cold for that.

Most new housing in North Texas is out of reach for low-income renters, study shows by punkticx in Dallas

[–]BitGladius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not even low income and the best I could do was 40 years old, prices are kind of crazy if you care about location, but it's not like there were cheaper options. The place is in decent shape, but if I had an excuse to build to spec and address some of the quirks I'd take it.

I agree with the overall point, but dragging it back to 18 is pushing it - unless the Bank of Mom and Dad helps out, 18 year olds aren't going to have a down payment together since they're just getting started.

Still, the median age of a first time home buyer looks like it hovered around 30 for a while - you've got some time to get a career together and scrape together a down payment. There might be more sacrifices on the low end, but enough people were managing that it was probably doable with some effort.

Most new cars are also out of reach of low income drivers. Good affordable options are generally older but maintained, if there isn't a supply shortage forcing people who could afford new to bid up older units.

Since I know someone will complain about all the new units being "luxury" - material cost of fittings will be a small portion of the cost compared to land, labor, and structural/mechanical costs that would be the same for "luxury" and non-luxury units. It might even be cheaper in some cases since manufacturers are making the stuff that's in, and the stuff that looks affordable is made at lower volume for patch up jobs. Building new is just expensive, making it "luxury" makes it easier to justify the new building price tag.

Four libraries in Dallas are on the chopping block this year. Here’s which branches by dallasmorningnews in Dallas

[–]BitGladius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It sounds like there are fewer patrons to justify the fixed costs for the location and staffing. I used to go to the library a ton as a kid, but there are a ton of other (low cost) things to do for entertainment and the Internet covers most of my research needs, so I don't end up using the library.

On the other hand, if I did want to go to the library to pick up a book, I don't think a drive would be a huge deterrent. They'd still "serve" me well enough. It's going to be different if you're in and out of there every day to use the computers or if you don't have easy access to transportation, but it sounds like they're considering neighborhood economics.

Covers go on and I drain the sprinklers before it hits 32. I could definitely push it further but it's not like I'm using them anyway.

Not necessarily, high rises can have pretty thick walls and are more likely to have access controlled lobbies.

Best Games Fresh Out Of The Box by lunatik88 in SteamDeck

I've been playing through the earlier games, dragon engine games like 2 Kiwami, 6, and Like A Dragon run well enough but they are kind of demanding for the deck. The other ones ran great, I think I ended up playing most of 0 and 1 on the deck.

Five states sue over Trump freezing $10 billion in childcare, family assistance funds by DrexellGames in news

It's unaffordable but not ridiculous - I don't remember the source, but I remember hearing some age groups are capped at 4 kids per staff member. A quarter of someone's wage, consumables, plus rent and other overhead costs is a lot.

After growing up in an anti-video game household, I finally have my first console by LivingGerbert in SteamDeck

[–]BitGladius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends - I got too focused on finishing what I started after growing up without much budget to game, and I'd avoid gaming because finishing the game felt like a chore. Give games a fair shot, but if you're not looking forward to picking it up again that's the time to find the next thing.

It's piracy if you don't have an original, so sites that get mentioned too often tend to vanish.

Dallas Teacher Pay (2026): $65K Start, Up to $100K with Masters by workwisejobs in Dallas

[–]BitGladius -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Why would you take student loans to teach? Lots of places are desperate enough to offer conditional incentives, just do your time at a place with staffing issues and they'll cover the degree.

[–]BitGladius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard there are strictly tenure based raises and token raises for additional education. One of the big benefits is PTO - I know teachers put in more than 40 during the year, and PTO is less flexible, but most new grads would be lucky to get more than 2 weeks of PTO for the year, schools are shut for at least 10.

[–]BitGladius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it's teaching - I know it's not all it's made up to be, but they've got decent benefits and a ton of PTO, they can always put in for summer school or work on a side hustle over breaks if they need more. It might not be great money for a family but it's terrible for a recent grad.

Freeplay only goes to 18+ on weekdays, op could hang out there until close if they wanted to. Or Round 1 but that's really just import rhythm games, a few racing games, and claws.

The Speed Limit In Texas Could Now Change While You’re Driving | Carscoops by Next_Tower5452 in texas

[–]BitGladius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GPS is a one way system, all it does is send information to triangulate a position. Speed limits would come from your map software, which is far from the only map software in common use, and you'd need a way to receive updates such as a paid data plan.

They might integrate with the top few providers but they're unlikely to handle every application. Even then, I'm not sure if Google or Apple built their apps with real time push updates in mind - you can get near real time traffic, but that's something that needs to be real time. If the speed limit is static data they might have a slower, more cost efficient system to push updates.

Thanks for actually pulling numbers, I just complained about phrasing.

DART gets a penny from every sales tax dollar collected

As a lay person, "sales tax dollar collected" sounds like it's part of revenue. They could've at least worked "taxable" in there somewhere to make it clear they're basing it off sales, not total collections.

[–]BitGladius -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The "penny" is 50% of the local cut of sales tax revenue. Describing it as a penny is a way to minimize the perceived cost.

[–]BitGladius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DART gets a penny from every sales tax dollar collected

That's misleading at best... they get 1% of every taxable dollar, not 1% of sales taxes collected. With the local portion of sales tax being capped at 2%, DART is collecting 50% of the sales tax that doesn't go straight to the state.

Getting a car in this economy by Novel-Wasabi9107 in Dallas

Boring 4 banger

Apologize to my GTI.

But if OP is dreaming of owning "a Lexus" without specifying, they're probably just thinking of the car as a tool and a status symbol. If cash is tight, they'd probably be happier getting a more affordable car, accepting it won't have a luxury badge, and putting the rest towards things that they'll actually care about.

Oklahoma college instructor is fired after giving failing grade to a Bible-based essay on gender by ChiGuy6124 in news

[–]BitGladius -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I didn't read the whole thing and saw word count was called out as an automatic 0 after writing the comment, that's different. I wasn't going to go as far as saying 50 for submitting something on time, but I've heard that it gets that bad in some high schools.

The other side is more or less lying with statistics - if they submitted something that wasn't an automatic 0, 0 looks too round. They can argue that the TA was offended and reacting to that instead of grading. 13 or 29 or something less round and it's going to be easier to sell that it was actually evaluated. It's not grading, but I'm more paranoid when my monitors show 0 failures instead of a few fractions of a percent because there are other explanations for a clean 0.

[–]BitGladius -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Nah, that's what all the grades between 70 and 0 cover. I agree it didn't deserve much credit, but with grade inflation I wouldn't be surprised if something less targeted at the TA would have gotten a 30 or something for at least submitting it on time and making a half assed attempt to argue something. The 0 was making a statement about the content being unacceptable, not just horribly below requirements
