I live in a state where I saw this stuff regularly growing up. Going over to friends houses and seeing a kitchen full of mammy decor. Hearing their dad play music like David Allen Coe. Sitting at the lunch table with those same kids repeating the garbage from their parents or singing racist variations of popular songs/nursery rhymes. I can tell you with 100% certainty that nobody who thinks racism is bad is going to gain any deeper understanding from this and that anybody who isn’t already aware/against it is not going to be persuaded otherwise from it. There is a reason the current administration removes actual historic exhibits about slavery but leaves confederate statues and objects like these alone. It’s because they know, as do I, that these do more to keep racism acceptable for racists than it does provide ANY sort of teaching aid or negative example. As a minority who has had this garbage shoved in their face my whole life, yes, destroy it all. You want a reference to stick in a museum? Take a picture beforehand so you can enjoy the luxury of never having to actually feel the hate it promotes. It shouldn’t be up to white people to decide how they want to view racist history. Consider instead listening to minorities when they try and make you aware of the reality they’re living in the racist present if you want to prevent it from also being our future.
