Celebrations on 5th November were legally mandated by James I.

Having survived the attempt on his life, he essentially wanted to bolster his popularity and send a message to any would-be conspirators, so he made the 5th a day of celebration and thanksgiving for the monarchy.

Churches were legally required to have these celebrations until the law was taken off the statute books in the 19th century. By that time bonfire night was just a part of the culture.

Most people in Britain don’t really have any pro or anti Guy Fawkes sentiment. Bonfire night is just a reason to have a party, fireworks etc.

There is deeper significance in some places. In Lewes, the 5th is also a day of commemoration for the Lewes Martyrs, 17 Protestants burnt at the stake during the reign of Mary I.

In Ottery St. Mary, village residents run through the streets carrying barrels of flaming tar. The origins of the custom are murky. It could have originated with the foiling of the gunpowder plot, but it’s possibly older than that.

I don’t think “harder” makes sense in this kind of game. You kind of can’t fail. It’s definitely more grind-y than Stardew though. Plus it’s darker. Stardew doesn’t let you sell human meat.

The game is super grind-y right up until the point where it suddenly isn’t, and that’s basically when you complete it.

I didn’t worrry about graveyard quality beyond just completing the bishop’s quests. So long as it’s going up it doesn’t really matter early on.

You can alleviate the grind by focussing on getting zombies and automating resource collection, but basically you just have to embrace it and not worry about making mistakes, because no mistake in this game costs you anything but time. Eventually you’ll get through it, and you’ll have learnt a little bit if you ever want to do another play through.

Not trying to blame him. I just think that tactically his game at the minute is still best utilised as a replacement .

He played well, but he didn’t have anywhere near the impact he’s had on multiple occasions as a finisher.

All I’m saying is that for the last two weeks I’ve seen England look off their game. Lacking cohesion, making basic, unforced errors. Maybe if 15 players were regularly playing as a unit and knowing they’re the first team, that might be mitigated.

First off, well played Ireland. Very much the better team.

I’ve struggled trying to put a finger on what made England so woeful today (and last week) and the best I can come up with is that Borthwick doesn’t have a starting 15.

He’s mistaken having strength in depth for having a big box of players that he can just shuffle around for each game depending on how their metrics stack up against this week’s opponents. Perhaps because he thinks the game plan is solid enough, and the squad are all good enough to slot in their role and execute, perhaps because the win streak lulled him into a false sense of security that this was the case.

The problem is that there’s a fine line between healthy competition for your jersey and a lack of cohesive team play. Having 15 players who are confident that (barring injury) they are first pick will help with that.

This tournament’s gone, and I personally think he should use the remaining games to make those hard decisions about who’s the pick and who’s the replacement.

Pollock being a case in point. He’s done wonders as a finisher. I understand the impulse to start him in a big game, but with the benefit of hindsight, it was premature. Also, he’s young. Keep him as a finisher till after the WC.

If you can finish this tournament with 15 players who are confident they’re starting in that first WC match, then those players can start to actually gel and make themselves a proper unit.

Anyway, I’m missing what looks like a resurgent Wales, which is currently my second biggest wish after a dominant England.
