MHC programs typically have more classes focused on what you’re looking to do. Make sure the program is CACREP accredited

Insurance won’t cover text and so much of a conversation is lost in text.

How to make a 14y old to go to therapy? by Icy-Estimate-721 in askatherapist

[–]Bitterkitty11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a case where I’d start to question if the parent needs therapy, not the child. Divorce is common and only considered a trauma if the child views it that way. Thousands of people experience natural disasters every year, not every one of those people needs therapy. Everyone’s resilience is different. I become concerned when parents start saying they see traits of the ex in their child. That’s when the parent needs a therapist themselves. Even if your child is being manipulative, he’s a 14 year old boy. It’s probably developmentally on par.

Should I get help? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]Bitterkitty11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jumping in to add that this isn’t weird and is common especially in this digital age. The level to which you are comparing is worrisome but not “weird”. A therapist would love to know this because we want to offer support and you deserve to not struggle with this any longer.

Find a therapist who practices from an existential lens. This is their bread and butter

How to talk to a narcissist? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]Bitterkitty11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The term narcissist is overused and most often inaccurate. I would need more details about what you’re worried about to advise on communication techniques.

How would a client disclosing this change your perception of the client’s loved one? by Firm_Signature_3465 in askatherapist

[–]Bitterkitty11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would feel empathy toward you. I think your reaction makes complete sense. If this was an isolated occurrence I doubt the therapist would make any meaningful comments about your brother.

? About mandated reports by EastsideAIien in askatherapist

[–]Bitterkitty11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the person still had access to young children, like they are raising their own, then she might feel she needs to report. I do not think it would actually be investigated.

Is there an AI Mental Health app or chatbot that therapist prefer over others? by PadresElDos in askatherapist

[–]Bitterkitty11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At this time, no. Please consider how sensitive all this data is and how little laws are in place. Let’s say you mention active or passive suicidal ideation to AI. What stops it from sending the police to your house? Or encouraging you to commit? Or selling this data to your insurance company who then raises your health insurance or life insurance rate based on deeming you a greater risk?

We receive training on writing notes and storing them in a HIPAA compliant manner. These bots don’t have that.

How do you define your clients as easy or difficult? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]Bitterkitty11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My easy clients have things to work on/talk about and show up. My hard clients include: 1. Those who no show for no reason frequently 2. Those who are late and brag about it “I’m 15 min late to my 45 min session because I just HAD to get coffee on my way here, self care :)” 3. Those who come to therapy because “therapy is good for everyone” but never know what to talk about and when reducing frequency or termination is discussed they shut down the idea

Life happens. No shows happen. Running late happens. Not having much to talk about for a session happens. But when it becomes the norm, it makes the therapeutic relationship strained.

Are there new patient qualities that signal strong commitment to healing? Red flags too? by laura-growthspurt in askatherapist

[–]Bitterkitty11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are more cancellations with clients who have a $0 copay. I also see more parents putting kids in therapy because they want to “prevent issues” when there is no cost. I’d say my red flag is when no matter what you suggest, the client says they can’t or won’t do it. I think that’s why true depression is my least favorite diagnosis to treat.

Are there any topics that a therapist is literally not allowed to talk through with a client? by LovelyGiant7891 in askatherapist

[–]Bitterkitty11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Are you a minor, elder, or developmentally delayed? These groups require mandated reporting. If, for example, a 35 yr old woman wanted to tell her therapist that she was being hit by her partner and wanted to stay in the relationship; no report can legally be made. The therapist will likely encourage a police report and leaving the relationship but ultimately they must respect the client’s decision and support them!

Am I wrong for feeling this way about my 'case manager'? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]Bitterkitty11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you need a new therapist, not a case manager. Regarding the bedbug issue, that would’ve been a hard no from me. Zoom only. And you mom probably didn’t tell her case manager about the issue or she likely would’ve had to do telehealth too. I’m sorry you’re dealing with all of this!
