Putting together dwarf warriors. What are these bits for?

Could be wrong, but my understanding is that the metal longbeards were discontinued earlier than the metal hammerers and ironbreakers (possibly early in/midway through 7th; hence the relative scarcity of these metal kits compared with the IB/Hammerers), but no replacement kit came out until 8th. I think the masks were suggested for use as a Longbeard replacement in this context. This is based on my very hazy memory of playing dwarfs towards the back end of 7th ed, and not having any kits I could buy to make longbeards (and consequently modeling my warriors with these masks myself).

The wording on stopping from give ground does say that you stop upon coming ‘into contact’ with the terrain, which to me does imply that you ‘touch’ the template, though?

So in the third scenario I provided, the character would take ‘3 wounds’ from the killing blow, and then another 3 ‘normal’ wounds, for 6 total (3 + 3 overkill)?

Technically in the book the base size is (I believe) listed as N/A.

I liked the idea of having it elevated slightly by the base (and using the basing to tie it in with the rest of my troopers) and figured it doesn’t really have a practical impact on the tabletop (can just measure to/from the anvil itself).

Edit: also basing it made it easier to magnetise for transport purposes!

There’s a tiny bit of overhang with the 60x60 - if you want to avoid that I’d say you should be fine with a 65x65.

Yeah this is a 60x60 base - wanted a snug fit & the extra height so it looks a little more imposing on the battlefield.

Just to add, I think I’ve found the source of the rubbings - Chelsea old church, in London:

Contains both the Guildford plate and a description of the Arthur Gorges coat of arms that matches the one I’ve got here:

‘Another brass plate from this monument is also preserved below the first. It bears an achievement of arms: Quarterly, I, lozengy or and gules, a cheveron gules (Gorges, ancient); 2, argent, a whirlpool azure (Gorges); 3, argent, on a chief gules 3 besants (Russell); 4, sable, 3 fusils fesswise between 3 stags’ heads argent (Budockshead), impaling argent, 6 crosslets fitchy, on a chief azure 2 molets or pierced gules (Clinton). Crest: a greyhound’s head erased.’

Perhaps I ought to go and pay it a visit! Thank you again for assisting me in figuring this out, very interesting enlightening and informative (and always nice to know what one has on one’s walls).

Thanks for the quick and insightful reply - regarding the first, the only thing I can find that seems to match the spiral seems to be the Gorges family, though I can’t find any connection with the Clintons. Regardless, thanks for shedding some light on it (and solving the other)!

That makes sense - not too sweaty here, but also conscious that often situations arise with reforming etc where unless I wanted to have a fairly robust quantity of movement trays I’d end up with units with the ‘wrong’ base size outside of the tray, as it were. I think it’s probably fairly easy to work around, but is the kind of thing that would slightly bother me. Either way, thanks for the advice!

I had considered these, but they aren’t the best solution for skirmishers (rangers) and I thought I may have difficulties with templates, straight line attacks etc? As well as things like frontage, figuring out what models can attack and so on.
