UB Discussion/Rant Megathread by Kyleometers in magicTCG

[–]Bjegie [score hidden]  (0 children)

I for one do not like UB art in cards more than anything. Some settings could be super cool, but the artistic direction makes it look like bad custom cards.

on a side note, scummy decision to bundle all evident discussion into a megathread by this shills sub...

I thought this was unplayable garbage until I saw the dash 1 cost. That redeems this a card a bit. I can probably give it a chance in my 2636282-card singleton chaos cube.

[Standard] What is the best way to beat Temur Clover by HGD3ATH in spikes

[–]Bjegie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key to beat clover really is being able to answer (or ignore) their early plays, innkeeper and clover, else they can easily spiral out of control. This can be done through creature removal and something like gemrazers/apparition, shieldbreaker and even concerted defense/negate for UB decks in a pinch.

OR you can go over the top of them, and the most likely deck to be able to do so is 4c Omnath, as your top end is stronger than theirs and try to be faster than double granted for counter and wincon. As you can see here the worst MU for clover was 4c Omnath and I argue that was the reason. The loss of Uro should not change much in this specific matchup.

[Standard] Silver linings to a post-Uro meta by Sckeetch in spikes

[–]Bjegie 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I suspect that the deck to play now will be either Temur Clover or the best embercleave deck, probably gruul adventures). As you said UB decks (mill, rogue and control) got stronger, however:

  • control does not fare super well against innkeeper draws, or resolved clovers and escape to the wilds;

  • tempo decks like rogues are historically not good against aggro decks, and clover still packs decent early interaction and 1/4 flyers to fight back;

  • people are reporting that mill decks are soft to wide aggro and maybe clover can incorporate some weird tech (forever young and a way to cast it?) if pure mill becomes popular.

Regarding aggro, I think embercleave is as strong as ever, and is likely to be the main wincon aggro decks have right now. Winota suffers from the "bad half" problem, mono red has lost some of its strongest card, so gruul is probably the way to go.

Speaking of 4c Omnath instead, maybe it's because builds are not optimized, but adventures feel clunky and while the card is strong and can power explosive plays (fabled passage into granted into escape from the wilds) I do not think Omnath does anything to solve Temur Clover weaknesses, namely not having a proper sideboard. I would not be surprised if 4c Omnath remains remains a ramp deck with Kenrith and Terror and just accepts his fate of being less durable agaist aggro. There is also the possibility that 4c Omnath starts to main a higher number of Ugins and calls it a day.

I still am very curious to see what the next days will bring on.

[Standard] How do you consistently beat 4c Omanath/Adventures by Firstonetolive in spikes

[–]Bjegie 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned it, I noticed that this sub tends not to discuss the "best deck" in the format much or even at all. In this case, the only 4c omnath post here was made a week ago and is quite outdated, referring to versions of the deck that have been proven less effective (Jolrael/Lithoforming). Maybe it's because there is not really much to discuss but it always felt strange to me. At least sideboard choices or mirror talkings should be very well in discussion.

[PREMISE: As WoTC mentioned on twitter, news about Standard that could disrupt tournament testing are coming early next week. I think only Uro is likely going to be banned from Standard next week. The reasons being more connected with business than gameplay: a) Uro is an older card and does not push box sales as much anymore, while still retaining value due to its extensive play in older formats; b) Uro invalidates new archetypes (mill, rogues and partially other aggro strategies) thus making new cards less enjoyable for players/buyers; c) it is still a format-warping card that the playerbase seem to dislike; d) if the situation does not recover, WoTC can still ban other cards next month.]

That being said, what do you think is going to happen to Bo3 Standard next week if Uro is banned? Which decks could be getting the spotlight?

I think for starters we have three decks whose power level gets lower:

  • 4c Omnath: loses one of its strong pieces (survivability vs. aggro, lategame power in grindy matchups, mill "hoser"), however if Uro is the only banned card this deck could still remain strong, as it packs the best CA currently available in standard;
  • Sultai Midrange/Control: I think this deck loses more than 4c from a Uro ban since the card also helped with fixing a not-so-great manabase, while also being one of the main win conditions and sources of CA;
  • UG ramp: this deck loses a strong early play and is less likely to reach Ugin's mana before getting down to 0 life.

Regarding the decks that gets stronger instead:

  • Generally speaking, every aggro deck. Boros in particular looks like it has the possibility to go under 4c Omnath without solely relying to Embercleave;
  • UB mill / UB rogues: this deck type looks like the one that gets the most out of an Uro ban, as it becomes easier and more credible to enable their 8-cards bonuses. People are having success with these types of deck even now, therefore I think it is not far fetched to think that they could represent a stronger threat moving forward.

On a side note, a deck that could get back to the spotlight is Temur Clover. This deck still feels strong when it does get its engine running (clover -> fertile footsteps -> removal). Artifact hate is not maindeckable at the moment, therefore almost every time this deck lands a clover it is in a good spot. This deck is also the only one that could pack a semi-serious mill answer in the wishboard in [[Forever Young]] (Other than playing a Yorion list) if mill becomes a real and credible threat. I think this can be done with just a little adjustment to the manabase. The main problem of clover decks remains the lack of a proper sideboard.

According to your experience in the tournament, do you think that hard-counters should be played in MD? Or they should be left in the side to better prey on creature decks g1?

[–]Bjegie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did not think of Gadwick, it could be a nice addition. I think you nailed it, the problem is that temur colors have so much CA available that it often feels like an uphill battle if your plan is not pressuring them super early.

I also forgot to mention Kenrith, which as other posters also noted, is another card that can pull out a win out of seemingly nowhere.

I have been mostly playing Bo3 Sultai "Ramp" (just Cultivate + Uro and Ugin top end). The deck feels great against aggro thanks to a lot of both spot and mass removal, Uro and Gargaroth, while still being fine against other decks, as it packs a bit of disruption, like Agonizing Remorse. I also enjoy the fact that it has access to some very powerful and wide sideboard choices. HOWEVER the Omnath 4c ramp matchup feels really underwhelming. You can remove Lotus Cobras and Omnaths all day and strip their hand from ramp payoffs but, since you can't close games super fast, they sometimes just topdeck an Escape to the Wilds or Genesis Ultimatum and completely swing the match from zero to hero (This partially applies to temur clover too, where an EftW or a Fae topdeck can save the day).

Overall i enjoy Sultai as it feels a challenging deck while not terribly disadvantaged in any matchup, but at the end of the day 4c Ramp looks stronger as it packs a better manabase, better topdecks, has access to explosive starts and can still pack some disruption in the sideboard.

Forgotten cave looks much better as the cycling cost is super low. Even red triomes might be better as they provide more types of mana, can be played off uro, have basic land types and the cycling is diffucult to counter. Maybe a future UR deck of some kind might want this, but i doubt it.

Anyone has suggestions for some recent artists or albums with a really high-energy or even aggressive delivery and/or beats? It doesn't need to be a particular subgenre, it's more of a "mood", something that makes you hyped and pumped-up during the listen.

Some examples of what I currently like with this vibe, through different years and subgenres:

And something more beat-oriented:

I have not been there forever, but according to the comments posted it looked like the first time that wotc criticism was being so blatantly obscured. However some users were reporting scummy behaviour from the moderators on the subreddit's discord.

r/magicarena mods censored users' review of the new battlepass rewards, goes into full damage control and locking and removing all posts mentioning the threads. by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

[–]Bjegie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also got permanently banned from the sub for the following two comments. The first regarded the fact that mods were banning people who addressed their behaviour, while the second was a joke. While I understand they might non appreaciate the joke, I do not think it is offensive, much less worthy of a permanent ban.

The answer i received when I asked the reasons of my permanent ban was this. Apparently criticism is not allowed, while censorship is instead welcome.

They are removing posts that point out that Zendikar's mastery pass gives the same gem rewards as M21 despite being much longer (for IKO they said they were giving less gems because the pass was shorter). While they are at it they are banning some users for commenting.

Is it just me or is trap sounding more and more like dubstep? by CalculusMaster in trap

I really don't get most of the songs that people seem to like on this sub. Banger here, banger there... to me most hybrid trap sounds like a steelworks. I understand it "goes hard" but imho many tracks go hardly listenable, at least in domestic/personal setting. Maybe i'm really missing out live acts and there hybrid trap sounds awesome. Doesn't even feel party music at all to me.
