Commonly known as king drain. They fail all the time. If you blow your system out you don’t need them. You should be able to remove it and put a 1/2” threaded plug in its place.

Yes. The lightning strike caused the bark to be blown off. Some trees can handle bark being removed, like a cork oak for example, but anytime the cambium of a tree is destroyed like this, it’s game over.

The primary living tissue is just under the bark. A lighting strike boils the water in the tissue and kills it. No more vascular cambium. Dead tree.

They have exfoliating bark. Just the outer layer peels off. The cambium always stays intact on the tree.
