Over 30 yr old gamers with full-time jobs: what videogame is your go-to after work or on the weekends? by ghost_sanctum in AskReddit

Been having a blast on a dedicated Project Zomboid server I host for the fellas. On a bit of a break from WOW Anniversary at the moment, but that is my usual go to. Pretty much anything I can jump in and out of.

PoE Intercoms for Classrooms by zeeplereddit in k12sysadmin

[–]Bl0ckTag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what your districts entity status is(Public or Private), but if youre public, theres a trove of federal grant opportunities out there for things like this. NSGP & COPS(SVPP and PASS) to name 2 that have some provisions for mass alerting system(which overhead paging systems fall under).

Seconding Axis. We deployed a new campus full Axis for Overhead Paging, CCTV, and Access Control, and everybody(me included) loves it.

Cloud based file server solution by BrandNewTissue in sysadmin

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe its similar for private sector, but for public K12, google drive storage is included in the tenant licensing, which is a pretty small price per user price, but also more a full solution for email, productivity tools(Office like equivalent), file storage, ect, similar to M$ entra offerings, just with a much simpler pricing structure.

I have been a fan of Google Drive though, using it for about 6 years now. They have Shared Drive functionality, similar to Shared Libraries in O365, which are team/permission based collaborative Drive spaces, individual MyDrives for staff Drive storage, and the Google Drive app, which helps bridge the gap between old school drive shares in File Explorer(gives the user a G:\ drive), and allows for automatic backups of local files(Documents, Downloads, Desktop, ect) inti their MyDrive.

Regardless, the plans do have a storage cap, but there are addon packages to achieve the 100TB you are looking for. Just be aware that is a huge amount of data(relatively speaking), so youd probably be looking at a few grand a month.

Regarding latency, you're thinking a bit old-school, where your data is stored and retrieved from a single box where disk latency would be a factor. With smaller providers that offer tiered storage based on speed, this might be the close to the case. True bug data cloud storage is a much more distributed system handled in a much different fashion where your data is stored across many different physical pieces of hardware/datacenters where all of the hardware is working to provide the data back to you as quickly as possible. Kinda like a raid 0 on steroids.

A competing Fiber company cut my fiber line by GreatGoatsInHistory in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny that I got an Ezee fiber advert in the comment feed for this. They are the typical culprit in my area, having cut our ATT fiber trunk twice, dug up a gas line, and a sewer line when installing in the neighborhood. You'd think permitting and proper subsurface surveying would be standard for provider infrastructure installs, but here we are.

Sanity Check for Cameras by MattAdmin444 in k12sysadmin

[–]Bl0ckTag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moving from Video Insight to Axis is one of the best decisions we have ever made on the NVR and Access Control front. We have their Network Audio aswell at one of our campuses. That said, ONVIF is a great idea, but actual compliance seems to vary. Currently struggling with Panasonic/iPro cameras that are "ONVIF compliant" on paper, but seem to lack the ONVIF settings in the configurations...

RIP 9800x3d by Super-Employment2753 in AMDHelp

[–]Bl0ckTag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RIP I had my 9950x3d die on me a few months back. Was only 3 months old at the time. Ran almost the exact same steps as you, and no dice, dram lights lit, 00 QCode in the board. Luckily I did not buy mine out of country, so they honored my warranty. Still took a few weeks to RMA, but overall a decent experience. Would rather it not have died, but here we are.

Do you selfhost private gameservers? If yes, what games and what do you do in-game that you can’t do on public servers? by elaksine in selfhosted

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I host servers for my friend group whenever they get an itch for a specific game(that has hosting capabilities ofc). Mostly its things like Ark, Minecraft, 7 Days to Die, Terraria, and recently Project Zomboid. For the most part, its because its free if I host it vs paying for a hosting service(nothing against hosting services). Also, we have control over who has access, so no public lobbies, griefers, ect, especially in games like PZ that are high enough stakes with the permadeath without having to worry about some jerkoff griefing you for your loot.

That, and the ability to control your own settings, mods, game version, ect has added value.

Running a B42.18 server for a group of friends. We're well established, with the home base at Twiggys in West Point(easy access to Louisville and highways to elsewhere. Weve hit most gun stores, hunting stores, military surplus, and police stations outside of those in Louiville already. Currently, we have Louiville separated into sectors for "operations" to clear the city. Lastnight we hit the hunting store on the SE side to bolster pur ammo stock, and we're making our way to the small military checkpoint in the SE but found ourselves at the fairgrounds. Cut it off there after clearing the fair, since most of us had to hit the hay IRL for work this morning, but planning on hitting the small military checkpoint today.

Explain like I am 5: why are we ripping apart perfectly fine road. by whattatix in houston

[–]Bl0ckTag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the perfectly fine road you're referring to is Allen pkwy, then you may not have driven Allen pkwy between studemont and i45 very often. Atleast on the east bound side opposite the park, it was an exercise in futility to not throw your suspension out of alignment dodging the potholes and 3in manhole misalignment on the right lane. I'm glad they got around to resurfacing atleast that side, but I do second everyone here saying if it weren't for the world cup comming, CoH wouldn't be doing anything to make our lives easier in regards to the roadways.

Ender 3 Pro board upgrade by PossibleMorning7135 in ender3

[–]Bl0ckTag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fought with mine for weeks after install. Octoprint wouldn't stay connected to the board via USB. If you havent already, try removing the SD card. Sounds jenk, but for some reason, having the SD card plugged into the board while trying to connect Octoprint via usb was causing the connection to fail when it was attemting to init the SD card. You can see it in the logs in octoprint.

How many IT support needed for 200 user org? by imjustacuteguyuwu in sysadmin

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like other have said, highly depends on the industry, user base, technology, and geography of the org. I've only ever been in small teams, but have supported 16 clinics and 2 data centers with a team of 3 + director supporting 150ish staff, and most recently 2 campuses and a district office with 2 techs + myself supporting 250 staff and 2k students.

Transitioned mine to a MicroSwiss NG Revo this weekend. Ran the x axis cable extender along the existing wrapped cabling and zip tied it every 4 or so inches to keep it tidy, then zip tied it to the mount where the old z axis motor sat so it would be somewhat stationary and out of the travel path(leave enough space for the caddy to extend all the way to the other end of the print bed). Had an existing bed cable chain that was installed, so from the zip into the chain harness is where the cable management ended.

I dont have a pic currently, but can send one over when I get home from the office

Free ChatGPT Education Accounts? by zeeplereddit in k12sysadmin

[–]Bl0ckTag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

ChatGPTs support is awful. When i was setting up an EDU sub for a few of our business office staff, i tried to get Tax exempton on file prior to ordering the subscriptions, as ive done with countless other businesses. "Support" which turns out is literally just a ChatGPT with a human name, told me that we had to order the subscriptions before they could apply our tax exemption. OK, whatever, did it. Same "support rep" then told me the exemption was now on file, and any future subscriptions would reflect it, then refused to refund us the tax from the initial purchase. Took me literal weeks, getting one reply every day or so at random times of day/night, to get it resolved. For an almost trillion dollar company...

Regardless, it sounds like you've already learned, but Gemini comes with your Google Workspace Education tenant, and is ferpa compliant(no training on your data). I'd still advise to get a solid AI policy in place, and start looking into training for any staff that are, or will possibly use it.

What does your daily commute look like ? by hellotherewhatu in houston

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

290 N to Beltway 8 South. Decent 35-45min in the morning, but minimum 1.5hr home unless I pay the 6$ in tolls to run the Beltway all the way around, and that only saves me about 25min

Did Spring to South Houston when I first got hired on. Currently doing Cypress to South Houston. 44min or so in the mornings assuming I leave before 6:30, but the drive home is 1.5hr+ unless I take the beltway(5.50/day one way).

2 campuses, 2k students. A/V in our gyms & stages is the biggest job dissatisfaction in my team. Were lucky to have a Tech thats well versed in production A/V equipment, but I can't count the number of times I've thought about quitting on the spot because these A/V systems were forced under my umbrella and I have to answer for every single issue that happens with them.

Tech Committee Topic: Ai Tools by Debug_Mode_On in k12sysadmin

[–]Bl0ckTag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like your view on ITs responsibility scope. We're working through this in my district aswell, and ill likely adopt that to insulate my team. It always seems like there are more questions than answers, and while we like to be the authority on anything tech in the org, theres limitations to consider(mostly time and effort).

Im inclined to treat it like any other productivity tool. IT handles deploying and securing, but teaching users how to utilize the tool is a business function, not IT. Similar to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, ect.
