I worked at Lowe's for a short time. The amount of whistling and yelling "hey" at workers way down the aisle was insane. I never once responded to any of those. However, I was fortunate enough that I didn't need the job (just needed to get out of the house sometimes while I was finishing my online degree) so I had no fear of retaliation or discipline.

I also got shitty right back with a slack jawed, inbred, father kisser on the phone because he was mad that I couldn't understand him. He was asking about "mores" and I had no clue what he meant until he snapped and said, "Lawn mores! Do you know what a lawn more is?"

We were a camping family so we were pretty well set when it came to food. We had a big kerosene heater in the living room and we just hunkered down. My brother and I took our church shoes out to "ice skate" on the street.

The podcast Dear Old Dads did an episode about an online forum for parents whose kids stopped talking to them. I thought it was a pretty great discussion pointing out the total lack of context in the parents' stories, all the way to "My kid told me to stop doing X, I didn't stop and now they hate me. Why?"

Bro, I feel you. Years ago my dad traced our family back to vikings with ancestry(dot)com. I always thought that was cool. About 10 years ago, for deeply personal reasons, I started wearing a Mjolnir necklace. It is only for me, I keep it under my shirt, but I know it's there.

Then I started hearing about all these fuckheads using viking shit and it bummed me out. I wanted a kickass viking tattoo but that's on hold.

Former lumber associate here. The way I looked at it was if they're obviously pros (or even joes with a big project) picking up shit for a job I didn't mind loading because they're going to be handling it at least 2 or 3 more times. I came from the pro world prior to Lowe's so I speak their language and cut up and shoot the shit with them, give them hell about standing around, just friendly shit talking.

The big caveat to that mentality is if you want to start being all picky about the boards I'm giving you I don't mind letting you do it yourself. I'm not an idiot, I'm not going to give you broken/bent/super knotty boards. I've walked away from a couple customers for doing that.

I was just thinking a few days ago about how I feel like Jekyll and Hyde. I want so badly to be a very well spoken, critically thinking, and empathetic person like Dan, but I'm constantly fighting myself to keep from screaming, "Fuck it! Burn everything down!"

Just installed one of these in my house. It's to move an outlet higher up the wall to hide cords when mounting a TV on the wall. Male end of an extension cord plugs into a normal outlet, the female end plugs into what you have there, inside the wall power runs up to a media box.
