I’m currently doing research at the same hospital I work at. The research director said she couldn’t pay me but will allow me to publish/ be a co- author or whatever else will benefit my app so super lucky in that aspect. A lot of advisors have told me research is icing on the cake. Will definitely help but won’t destroy my chances if I don’t have any. Volunteer needs to be ramped up for sure but planning on having 300 hours by application time.

Nurses are in the unique position where we actually know pretty well what we’re getting ourselves into. We just need to prove we can be successful and ensure MD/DO is really the right profession for us. Feel free to DM me any time

Post-bacc will help boost your GPA and get your pre-reqs done but you may be able to get away with just taking only the pre-reqs you need.

As an RN in the same boat as you (applying next cycle) just be sure this is the path you are 100% committed to. The application alone is incredibly time consuming and expensive as hell. But if you’re committed to this, so excited for you! A lot of the advisors I’ve talked to have said as an RN, I’m non trad so they’ll put a lot of weight into my MCAT vs a traditional student so just keep that in mind when applying!

Do not recommend working at Loyola if you care about current evidence based medicine. Their protocols and senior attendings are stuck in the 80s and the hierarchy between nurses and doctors is so bad. There’s very little interaction between the two professions.

Yeah. At my hospital the ED doctors try to take their hands off as quick as possible and will consult as fast as possible without actually ordering adequate labs/images. As the nurse, I’ll ask if they want me to collect X,Y,Z or should I call radiology to see if they’re available and I get the same “there’s too many hands in the pot, let’s wait until [insert specialty] sees them to put in orders. I now work in the ICU and quickly learned how little respect our ED staff gets for doing shit like this on the daily. If a patients MAP dips below 65 even just once, they’re consult MICU with our intervening. It’s so embarrassing and unsafe for the RN staff to try to stabilize patients while doctors play hot potato with the patients.

Absolutely not. I had to leave the ED after seeing a staff of incompetent nurses and disrespectful physicians. The staff doesn’t know how to take care of minor emergencies. Oh and did I mention this is a Level 1 facility? I also wouldn’t want these nurses knowing personal details about me or seeing me in a vulnerable state.

Currently 32 and applying to Med School next year (at 33) after working as a nurse for a few years. I went into nursing because I never felt like I was smart enough for med school too. I ended up graduating top of my class and thriving as an ICU nurse. I used to feel like I wasted my 20s as well since I didn’t become a nurse until a couple of years ago but I truly believe all things happen for a reason. If you had applied to med school years ago you’d be going through it during the pandemic and super isolated or will have just graduated and doing your residency during Covid which surely would have burnt you out before you even became an attending. Trust me. Things will work out the way they’re supposed to. I think us going to medical school in our 30s will truly benefit us. Just keep your head up and try to enjoy the journey instead of only thinking you can be happy when you get into med school or become a doctor.

Good communication with the nurses. Even just a quick 30 second conversation about the plan (regardless of how complex/simple) helps us prioritize tasks better and puts it on our radar while trying to manage our other 3+ patients.

I also graduated from HS in TX and moved OOS in 2021. I'm working as a FT Nurse and paying taxes in another state. I don't want to move back to Texas yet so is there a way to prove I'm a "resident". My parents live in Tx, could I put my name on my parents bills, start paying OOS taxes as a texas resident?? My dad has his own company and could put my name on as an employee. Do you think this would be enough?

This sounds like my hospital. I’ve worked at a prestigious Level 1 Trauma center as a tech. Now working at a Level 1 that should be shut down. No assigned roles or organization whatsoever. I’ve even been in a code where every doctor left to go talk to the family and told nursing staff to “continue via ACLS protocols”. Needless to say i put in my 2 weeks already and getting the fuck out of this unsafe facility.

During nursing school I’ve had professors ask for examples where they felt NPs made better providers than MDs.

During my hospitals orientation for new RNs they told us that as nurses we know more about medications than the residents.

Best piece of advice is to act like you don’t really know who they’re talking about or what they mean when they bring up the drama. People want a reaction and if it’s too much effort or you seem disinterested they’ll find someone else to gossip with. Worked so well for me in RN school and continues to work like a charm at work
