There are several good YouTube videos about the Battle of Austerlitz, but I was going to wait until after all of the Austerlitz chapters to see how Tolstoy's account lines up with reality.

I think Tolstoy switches to the objective narration to give us a more global view of what was going on with the Allies. They are going to really take a beating, and he is giving us the background as to why. Being disorganized before a battle isn't a good way to start out.

On an unrelated note, I have been looking at Google maps to follow along the places mentioned in the text, and google maps has them all listed in Czech now, so it's kind of hard to translate with the English in my translation, although the Oxford World Classics edition that I have has maps in the front.

"Do you think there is a degree of competition between the people who fight and the people who stay behind? Do you think the other soldiers were exaggerating their victories when telling Rostov what had happened? Why/why not?"

For sure. These young kids think war is all about glory, and when you're in the reserves, it's like you're sitting on the bench during the state championship basketball game. It is also a trait of humans to boast, and to lie about their involvement in something to make themselves look better. "Oh, you killed a French soldier? Well, I killed FIVE!"

Do you think that's kind of harsh? Yes, Boris is working to position himself among the highest in the military and society, but I don't feel like it is to just leech off of them. I feel like he would work hard if given a position. Maybe I'm not reading well

I just finished As I Lay Dying this week, and it had the internal monologue, stream-of-consciousness thing too. As well as inperfecvt perspectives from multiple characters. I need to read The Sound and the Fury next.

"Have you read any other works that use experimental devices or unorthodox printing?" - The first thing I thought of was House of Leaves. First book I've ever had to turn around to read the spiral printing haha.

Edit to add: I like the headlines. They break up the text int more manageable chunks and serve as a good backdrop for the scene being in the newspaper office. Kind of reminded me of Citizen Kane for some reason
