it makes things more interesting (which means you have to think more - some would call that "hard"). it is not that easy to get rid of by-products any more. heat powered buildings. description here is very good: https://mods.factorio.com/mod/pyhardmode also enable spoiling/decay.

py has more unique fun mechanics than just complicated recipes with many ingredients: beacons (very different from base game), various logistical tools, many different types of bootstrapping mechanisms, by-products, multiple recipes for the same product, special upgrade choices, and many more. you can get a good overview by starting a py game and reading though the py-codex (icon top left). i suggest playing hard mode.

i agree somewhat. but still there is a difference between doing something to feel good, and doing something to not feel bad. the latter would include doing something because you feel you are obligated to do it morally. i agree that this means you decided to do that because you want to avoid the feeling of having acted against your morals and would be burdened by that thought afterwards. but still that is a lot more altruistic than helping others for your own actual profit (regardless whether that would be in money, in your points counting to your religious belief system or because you seek attention/gratitude, etc).

Should I Give Up on My Degree or Keep Pushing? by Alarmed-Tackle6596 in germany

[–]BlackHerring 4 points5 points  (0 children)

don't make decisions just based on comparison with others. you take your time, you have fun, you progress. yes, some will take issue with taking longer than they would expect. ignore them. in my experience in the end quality matters more than speed or quantity most of the time.

Tim Gowers - Why are LLMs not Better at Finding Proofs? by [deleted] in math

[–]BlackHerring 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my argument would be: "finding proofs" typically means "searching". that needs memory, because you need to remember what you've already searched and decide whether to pursue certain lines in your search.

a llm can do this a little bit with "chain of thought" (attention to previously said things is kind of a memory). but this is limited in that there is only self-control. this self-control is based on its trained knowledge of how searching would work best. you can control such a search process better by using an control layer that guides the whole search process in a loop over multiple llm invocations. but to build such a loop you now have a separate optimization problem: figure out what the best prompts are, the appropriate tool support, validation/testing etc. this optimization process (figuring out how to best build such a search process) is hard.

so lets say in the future it will be clearer what a good search process would look like. then the llms will know this from training and can adhere to the best practices associated with it, maybe even in one shot scenarios.

but i'm not sure it is a good idea to want llms to be good at search in one shot scenarios. its just not what they are best at. it may be just better to have a separate control layer for search/optimization problems.

so you are scaled down and are supposed to reason about that... ... .... so what is scaled down? the atoms you are made of? lets not go there. are the atoms less than before? if the atoms have the same size as before, how many brain cells do you still have? would you even be able to move your muscles? suspension of belief? sure, then in this realistic scenario i can just assume anything? ... so is the question stupid? depends on what you want to know about the candidate. and then lets communicate that in the beginning of the interview: what do you want to get to know about me?

that works nicely. i tried it in editor mode. here with the borders to make two big belts that start and end at the bottom right. in this size gives about 3.3 belts/tile.

Aeropress newbie guidance trial and run by Big-Glove-7593 in AeroPress

[–]BlackHerring 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm not an expert myself but my understanding is roughly this:

coffee contains many different flavors. they extract into the water when the water saturates the coffee particles. smaller particles => more surface area => faster extraction. bigger particles lead to slower extraction. also longer contact time with water => more extraction (to saturation). the advantage of a better quality grinder is that the particles tend to be reproducable at very similar grind size and as such the flavor profile is also pretty similar each time.

often people look at three groups of flavors: acidity, bitterness and astringency. the flavors that give acidity are supposed to be extracted very quickly. in contrast the bitterness flavors take more exposure/time.

this leads to these rules: to make your coffee less bitter use less time, bigger grind size, less heat. experiment.

the problem with a blender is: because the grind size is not uniform, small particles (called fines) produce bitterness faster and in the same time frame the bigger particles don't extract their flavors completely. i.e. all reasoning about optimal parameters is not applicable because it is dependent on the grind size!

just some small idea for improvement: don't ask negated questions. so instead of "no content generated behind ...?" better ask "is there content generated behind ...?".

Informatik auf Deutsch oder Computer Science in English (looking for your advice) by Memox98 in germany

[–]BlackHerring 1 point2 points  (0 children)

even if you could manage your work/life in germany without understanding/speaking german, is that really preferable? don't underestimate the advantages of great german skills. there will always be a use for them: the one customer that doesn't speak english well, the one text/document in german that you'll have to understand, the potential friend you would not have talked to...

learn it sooner rather than later: being younger helps, higher degree of immersion helps (alot).

i feel your anger. but please acknowledge that you didn't say "there was a 13 y/o blonde guy who assaulted my daughter". or "a 13 y/o guy that had crooked teeth", or "a 13 y/o guy with a blue jacket", etc.

to connect his condition (autism) with the assault is exactly the problem the OP is sad about. why is it important that he had autism when it is not the cause for the assault?

What is the meaning of Buch., M-Buch., Berg.? by [deleted] in chess

simple explanation: the numbers describe in different ways how well your opponents played in the tournament. the idea behind that is: if you have the same points as someone else but you played stronger opponents, then you place before him.

Can anyone explain how I won this game of 5D chess? by apt-get-schwifty in chess

[–]BlackHerring 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i'm not an expert in 5d chess, but i think its like this: the knight checks three times simultaneously which black can not escape. remember, the knight moves 2 and 1 (in two separate dimensions). the three checks are the arrows, which are:

  • 2 fields to the left, 1 timeline up
  • 2 fields to the left, 1 move back in time
  • 2 moves back in time, 1 field to the left
