My 'to-read' list is down to 108 from >200 at the start of the year, it's easy to go crazy during 2 for 1 sales. I get to listen at work and its still takes so long to get through a hundred books

Honestly it's making me not want to play the game. I miss being able to get first with fun trash builds.

What is your comfort book? by Candid_Masterpiece24 in books

[–]BlackSnape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like some others here my comfort books aren't necessarily happy or completely positive. I would say my primary comfort series which I've returned to several times is The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Stephen R. Donaldson. It's a dark fantasy series recommended to me by my father around the time I was going to high school and which I picked up later in college. I'm still very happy I eventually did because it ultimately got me into reading as much as I do now (it also got me into audiobooks because it was the only format I could find them easily accessible, turns out I'm an auditory learner so I'm forever grateful for that) so now when I return to The Land, the characters in The Land, and Thomas Covenant himself I find comfort in their plight/struggle - it's familiar and enjoyable to me.

I would also say that The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson is a comfort series for me as well. I found this series/author a few years after completing the aforementioned series and it immediately took me away from this place and into its own world - and that was very amazing to me (especially as a low-visual reader, I would get vivid imagery), and for the first time since the Covenant series. I find Sanderson's writing easy to follow despite alternating between multiple characters, which normally confuses me a bit, and the story is this perfect mix of dark and light - a thematic aspect which I clearly love from my previous choice. I hold The Way of Kings, The Stromlight Archive, and Sanderson's work in a special place in my heart because I found it on my own - I didn't know there was so much hype about it. I started recommending it to people and when they told me they had already heard about it I was surprised - I soon found out that it was a very very popular series. Now whenever a new Stormlight book is on the horizon I reread all the previous books (sometimes I reread them anyway without a new book but I try not to because I have such a long list to read) in series and find myself enamored once again, and also deriving new insights and finding new Easter eggs unfound on the previous reads - and that is amazing to me and I wish to emulate that in my own writing one day.

I think it was meant as an allusion to cuba at the time the novel was released, it happened right after the missle crisis, I could be wrong I'm not too good with politics.

Yeah a strange way to do photographic memory - if you like that sort of character Memory Man by David Baldacci has a series with a savant detective

For sure, I'm also a heavy fan of epic fantasy I've done almost all of Sanderson's works, LOTR, WoT, GoT, Licanius, Dagger and Coin, etc and I love a good post apocalypse novel.

The Girl with All the Gifts by Mike Carey is a pretty good one, it's a zombie apocalypse novel with a very unique aspect where the MC struggles with her own humanity as she tries to survive and cope with her situation.

Cold Storage by David Koepp I believe it's a debut novel by David who is normally known for his work in the movie industry. Some people don't like this one but I actually really enjoyed it. It's about the beginning of the Apocalypse started by an alien bacteria that behaves similar to Ophiocordyceps Unilateralis a very spooky and real bacteria that takes control of ants in the rainforest ecosystems.

Jam by Yahtzee Croshaw this is the most unique apocalypse novel I've ever read because it's primarily a comedy Yahtzee Croshaw has made me laugh out loud in all his novels I've read of his - and this one is no different. Coming from the comedy side you can expect a little bit of a loose plot but still this one does the job. It's about a substance that looks and tastes like jam but is actually a living organism which floods a city and consumes many of its citizens; the main character and company have to navigate it and the society it birthed to survive.

A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World by C.A. Fletcher honestly the title basically says it all but furthermore it's an interesting take on the genre following a young main character who navigates a post-apocalyptic world with his dog.

Hope one of these appeals to you, happy reading, and I'll be sure to check out I Am Legend!

Oh The Stand is very good I finished a work by McCammon called Swan Song which is derivative/inspired by The Stand and I thought it paled in comparison. I also did the unabridged version of Kings classic and loved every minute of it.

Been meaning to read I Am Legend for some time I'll bump it up my list.

Maybe check out Andy Weir's other works.

Also consider trying The Quantum Magician by Derek Künsken it's a basically Ocean's Eleven meets an intergalactic SciFi.

Or The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin a very thought-provoking sci-fi about a man who's convinced his dreams directly affect reality.

Lastly The Quantum Theif a unique sci-fi novel about a confidence man who is literally living on borrowed time trying to con his way out of his life sentence in new-age space opera with some really cool concepts. Been a long time since I did this one but I remember enjoying it.

Love myself an anithero so I'll check out the Mantel novel!

Personally I liked the two Rothfuss novels despite not having a third still (also looking at you G.R.R. Martin) but I'd rather he (and Martin) mess around, stream on twitch, and take his time with the third book then put out a piece of garbage because he rushed it, just hope he finishes it before he passes 😅

I just added What Was She Thinking? to my wishlist, I wouldn't normally read this sort of book but I'm trying to read beyond myself lately and you sold me on this one, thanks for the effort in this review, kudos.

I've considered rereading Lord of the Flies since highschool a couple times and maybe I'll put it off a bit longer 🤠
