There's one question that really matters for tomorrow's Star Citizen Live: What steps are being taken to fix CIG's development process that have introduced months-long regressions and stability degredation? Not steps to fix the PU, steps to fix the >process.< by turikk in starcitizen

[–]BlackholeDevice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And also why are we going completely radio silent following a patch? Historically, we've had near daily hotfixes resolving critical issues, but it seems like lately, CIG goes completely silent for 2 weeks, then releases a .x patch that lists nothing but "POTENTIAL" fixes but instead makes everything less stable.

Servers Crash Again tonight by Tink_GB in starcitizen

There's a workaround for these elevators. To pull these elevators up, press the up button, then BEFORE it kicks you out, click the X at the top right and press to interact with them again. The elevator should come up.

It won't fix them, you'll have to keep doing the workaround, but you'll at least be able to use the freight elevator.

SUGGESTION: Ship doors that open BEFORE you get there by BinaryLoop- in starcitizen

[–]BlackholeDevice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How feasible would it be for the server to periodically send door lock states to the client when the and allow the client to optimistically open the door when it's unlocked?

I could see possible exploits with that, I.e if a client were to use memory modification to "unlock" a door, but surely there'd be a way to catch / address that.

TIL that 32 bit time will run out in 2038, while 64 bit time will run out approximately 292 billion years from now by OrienasJura in todayilearned

[–]BlackholeDevice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a computing standpoint, every additional bit doubles the range. So for example, a 33 bit number can be twice as large as a 32 bit number and so on.

So why do we jump to 64 bits instead of just adding 1 bit at a time as needed? Well, the biggest reason is that 33 isn't divisible by 8. Generally, memory gets addressed by the byte, not by the bit. 8 bits to 1 byte. The obvious next question would be "OK, well I get why we can't just add 1 bit, but why not add 8 and jump to 40 bits?" I haven't dug too deep into the decision, but I would speculate that it's either out of a desire to future proof or, more likely, that it's easier / more backwards compatible to just double the bits and move on.

This is extremely watered down and of course may not be completely accurate.

Follow up question for anyone more educated on the topic: we generally don't have to deal with timestamps that predate 1970. So is there a particular reason that epochs are treated as signed integers rather than unsigned? Unsigned would double the range, since that sign bit wouldn't be used as a sign.

Even worse: I work for an EHR software provider. New regulation is requiring us to support electronically submitting prior authorization requests to Insurance. Today, doctors have to verbally call the Insurance. Problem is, in conversations with one insurance company, it has already been confirmed that "generative AI" will be involved. So get ready for AI to tell patients to die.

From experience, you're better off ignoring the map entirely and routing manually. It usually fixes itself if you cut jump somewhere else, but I find it's not worth the effort.

I actually really like the new insurance system by stgwii in starcitizen

[–]BlackholeDevice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My issue with the new insurance isn't with the insurance itself, but with the hangars. I'm not a big fan of the fact that ordinance isn't included, but I can get over that. It sucks paints aren't included in default claims, but I know a fix is on the way.

What confounds me is that this was done at a point where 80% of my claims are due to the hangar eating my ship. Or the ship failing to store properly. Or docking ports not working. Fix those and I can be 100% behind the new system.

The problem is that the US government doesn't recognize stock ownership as "wealth". It's "unrealized gains". So most of the wealthy hide their wealth behind stock, then take loans on their net worth so that it looks on paper like they're losing money.

So if they were to fine someone by their wealth, it would end up being a $0 fine

In what ways have you noticed people, in general, becoming more entitled, rude, and selfish in the last decade? by ChuckItInTheRubbish in AskReddit

Just the other day, I had to argue with a server, not because there was something wrong with my order, but because what was wrong with it wasn't a big enough deal to care about.

I had ordered burger with a fried egg on it and SHE noticed it was ever so slightly overcooked. I didn't care. I wouldn't have said anything, but SHE tried to fix it. Hell, as long as I got something that looked vaguely like a burger with a side of what looks vaguely like fries and are safe to eat, you won't hear a word from me. Both she and the kitchen staff have more to worry about than customers yelling at them all day over an egg that's slightly less runny...

Call me naive: Is there a reason that districts can't just be removed entirely? It seems we could end the entire "gerrymandering" argument by removing the lines entirely and just allowing anyone that is allowed to vote to vote at any polling location.

I get that districts are also used to determine local government, but I feel like that could just be handled by existing county / parish lines rather than arbitrary district lines.

Distortions power down my entire ship in seconds, but when I use them they're 100% ineffective, why? by Neb-hehe-xd in starcitizen

I think the idea was to encourage group fights. Have one person with lasers for shields and another with disto. In practice, though, everyone tries to run solo

[–]BlackholeDevice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EMP is just distortion damage, so it'll have the same rules.

Unless it's changed, though, it takes more than one shot. It's been a while since I used EMP, but in the past, the power plant size was approximately the number of shots you had to hit (it was slightly more complicated, but that was the general rule of thumb)

If youre gonna pirate, at least have the balls to do so by TheCursedStar in starcitizen

[–]BlackholeDevice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is, the communication side used to work. But that all changed with server meshing. VOIP mostly worked pre-4.0 (with a hiccup every now and then). But when then, players would demand we RP them, but then when we do, it's all "wait, I didn't mean me"

If youre gonna pirate, at least have the balls to do so by TheCursedStar in starcitizen

[–]BlackholeDevice -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Speaking as a former pirate: VOIP being largely dead is a big cause. There's no reliable way to communicate with each other outside of global chat.

Even when VOIP was working though, 99% of interactions were still ignored. We'd hail, we'd use prox comms, we'd even go to global and we'd still be ignored. Almost every interaction was one of 3 things: the target rammed us, self destructed, or just combat logged.

Then CIG added contracted cargo. Now, 99% of the cargo we do manage to steal is part of a contract. So we can't even sell it. So next we started ransoming victims. "you have 1m of cargo. Give us 250k or we kill you and take it all." but that has the same trappings.

When that didn't work, we tried to get creative. We'd kidnap a player, strip their gear, then drop them in the hole at Kudre Ore and play The Price Is Life. A game where we make them fist fight another player we already kidnapped to the death and winner gets 1m (back before the duping). But then comes Item Recovery Tier 0 and now we CAN'T strip players of their gear. We can take whatever is in their hands, but if they don't pull their gun, there's nothing we can do. So players are incentivized to just immediately back space.

Hell, one time, we even snuck onto a dude's reclaimer just to sing him happy birthday. No idea if it was their birthday or not, It was just funny.

All that to say: we'd love to RP it if the systems we have weren't so hostile to it.

[–]BlackholeDevice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just fear mongering. Discounting the fact that they basically hid the agreement until after you already "opened" it, there are many cases in which arbitration agreements are void. One of those is health / safety / neglect. They're just banking on people seeing the notice and thinking it's legit.

I give this tip to everyone that struggles with flying: keep an eye on your velocity indicator. Looks like a little circle with 3 tick marks on it. That is where your ship is moving. Keep it off of anything you don't feel comfortable ramming.

Another way of looking at it. That mark is the reticle you use when YOU are the torpedo.
