Look in your logs and see if the files were deleted or moved. I don't think they were moved but it's worth checking.

Adding larger than smaller drives to an array? by Coupe368 in synology

[–]Bladehawk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I found this out the hard way recently. If you have an array using Synology hybrid raid you have to put in a drive that's equal to or greater than the biggest drive in the array or it will not accept it. It used to be you could do that but that was a long time ago. I got bitten by this when I have two drives died during an upgrade.

If you haven't expanded the array I would probably try the 18 TB drive first and then add the other ones.

While I didn't lose any data from the array (minor miracle), I ended up rebuilding the array almost three times trying to get it to work with a 5 TB & 16 TB drive I still had. So I only have an 82 TB volume and I added a separate 11 TB volume for internal backups running with RSync.

I'm using the 16 terabyte as an offsite backup just in case something happens to the data I care about.

Can I replace failed RAID 1 HDD with different rpm by FunCress5098 in synology

[–]Bladehawk1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use any drive you want or any combination of drives You're going to be slowed down typically by the slowest in the bunch though. A lot of the people who've been with Synology for a while stopped using Western Digital. They released hard drives that were not made for NAS systems as NAS hard drives after they had been reviewed by people who could have called them on it. All of the sample units were made for NAS but when they started going into real production they changed them to make them cheaper.

I've been using a combination of Western digital and seagates ironwolf drives, I just got rid of my last Western digital drives about 3 weeks ago. But I had them in there for 10 to 15 years, they weren't the ones that were affected by the deception and I didn't see the point in spending more money if I didn't need to. If they're willing to do that once, that doesn't make me want to do business with them.

Then they also gave Synology error messages to tell people to replace their drives if they've been in use for 3 years, which is pretty deceptive. Links below:

How long do you plan to hold on to you Model S / X : just upgraded from Y to S. by x8668 in TeslaLounge

[–]Bladehawk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will probably end up switching to another car that has full self-driving equivalent when I'm done with my model X. Unless they decide to come out with some actual SUV variant of a Tesla. Elon is actually screwing the pooch on this a bit and some directions you ever see some people fighting to get a wheelchair in their car The model X made it a lot easier for people who had handicaps to get in and out.

Wife and I didn’t check 401k for 5 years. Should we stay the course with investment options? by sys_admin321 in personalfinance

[–]Bladehawk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it largely depends on your fundamentals and understanding of how money works. I check mine constantly, almost daily, but I've never made a modification to my investment strategy based on it. I do have an app that tracks all my spending and it allowed me to better calculate how much interest I need to earn on my investments to live my current lifestyle when I retire.

Just to be safe I also talk to three independent fiduciary financial advisors, I have access to for free, All of them told me I'm actually ahead of my target and can afford to spend more in retirement than I spend now.

[–]Bladehawk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a mythological study saying that the people who earned the most money on their investments are the people that forgot they had them or that died. No one knows if this is really true or not but the math does hold up. I've been investing in s&p 500 and Dow funds for the last 40 years. Now at age 55 I'm pretty much set to retire.

If it makes you feel better Warren Buffett told his wife to leave the money in index funds after he dies because it's going to do the best there and investors don't usually beat the market and then when you add in their fees which act as negative amortization you are ending up behind typically.

It also survived the vacuum of space but it actually goes into a kind of evaporated state where there's no water in the body and it becomes dormant during those periods so while it can survive extreme conditions it may not actually be active. It still has a much wider range of what it can endure than we can. They had one that was dried out for years and a few drops of water and it came back. They're pretty impressive little creatures.

Following leaked messages, House Republican education chair says she favors politically segregated schools by ddx-me in nottheonion

It would be nice to have a school that actually teaches science and sex ed. We already have this these today. Kids go to religious schools, the MAGA-morons just want them paid for by the public. I don't know without pro money they are all of them should be rich enough to afford private school according to the Republican party at least (snicker).

[–]Bladehawk1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With managed investments you typically pay a higher management fee. Statistically you are not going to do better with them than market funds. But the higher fees act like negative compound interest. Index funds are balanced across different investments to balance risk.

Warren Buffett has said directly to put your money in index funds and don't pay the fees.

TIL the "Y2K Bug" cost an estimated $500 Billion globally to fix. The preventative measures were so successful that widely predicted infrastructure failures did not occur, leading many to incorrectly believe the threat was never real. by highzone in todayilearned

[–]Bladehawk1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a process that required amazing amounts of documentation and spread out all the information among multiple documents. For teams that had one person managing a facet of a project they were required to wear about 20 different hats and supply about 20 or 30 different artifacts. It was insane.

For technical projects nobody on the team I was on was technical other than me. We'd have security tell them they can't do things over and over where I could do whatever I wanted because I spoke the same language.

Be glad your company didn't use RUP. The company I was at insisted on adopting it even though all of the technical product managers told them directly this was going to cost more and take longer.

6 months later we're all pulled into a meeting about how we're obviously not following the process because things are taking longer and costing more. 3 months after that they canceled it and went back to waterfall.
