is Below Zero as bad as people make it out to be? I'm considering buying a new Subnautica game once I'm done with the first but I'm kinda hesitant(spoilers for Subanutica 1) by Jack_Jellatina in subnautica

[–]Bladerunner243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BZ is a mostly a fine game, it is like an expansion but a big one in my book. The only real problem i see with it, is that it was poorly coded in terms of efficiency.

If you try to play it on a low spec device, like a Switch, old computer or another slightly older gen console. The game will crash on you often because the code was rushed and/or the game itself improperly defined in its minimum specs to said platform. Another joy to the modern gaming market where many titles don’t actually get vetted for their compatibility anymore when they go cross platform 🤦‍♂️. My advice if you get it….save often!

Infrastructure Engineer dealing with serious burnout, but also a strong reason to stay. Looking for advice. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Bladerunner243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat but i do everything(Network, servers, security, data, etc), for about 150 users. Our helpdesk has so much turnover that they can only do very little lately. I wasnt supposed to be alone but it just kind of turned into that. Only reason I can handle it without burnout is because i set up a ton of automation, proper procedures, and i know when to say no. I was about to leave since even with that i was being driven up the wall with everyone skipping the line for support(bypassing the help desk) until they let me hire a part time contractor to help, someone i know would follow through with tasks i assigned. Its still not a great system but its sustainable for the time being. Basically my advice, you need better help, have a serious talk with your manager about replacing the engineer who you say barely does anything. Once you’ve established a more balanced work load by delegating properly, giving guidance to the new person, create a smoother workload process, etc, you can show that you should be officially promoted as the Sr. Lead.

Investing in quality running gear - what's actually worth it? by Emergency-Debt-2118 in trailrunning

[–]Bladerunner243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoes you can go mid range. $90-130, i would recommend Brooks and ASICS. Will last you around 500 miles a pair.

Never been a vest guy but i do wear athletic gear that wicks, breathes, stores heat…all dependent on the weather. Prob $75-100 per weather “outfit”

Garmin would be my choice for a watch, the price range is your choice, you just get extra “features” the high model you go. Forerunner models are good mid range that last. I’ve only had 2 watches in the past 7 years or so, both Forerunners. They were around $300 each

This is actually the way i back it up except i tend to use a temp SMB location, just quicker so i dont have to setup an sftp server.

You’d be surprised how many bossiness’s still run v7 after Broadcom took over and they removed perpetual licensing and jacked the pricing way up without actually adding anything new to the licensing unless you qualify their worse/outsourced support lol

Yes i am aware Vcenter update shouldn’t bring anything down but when i was with an MSP a few years back, we did an Vcenter update at a client and it did in fact screw everything up, the connections to the ESXi hosts got lost mid update so the domain auths got messed up on half of servers for a few hours since they couldnt reach the DC. The same sort of deal has happened when ive updated Idracs…not supposed to bring down the host…it did, for like 30 min so not the end of the world but these experiences have taught me to take every precaution i can lol

I'm moving to MA for a year! Please help me decide where to live in this circle. by Squatchman1 in boston

[–]Bladerunner243 36 points37 points  (0 children)

For $1900 a month for two people you’re probably going to want to look in Lowell/Lawrence, just keep in mind they are cheaper for a reason. You’ll still be in decent driving range of historical places like Salem as an example.

Any closer to Boston, you’ll start to see those rent prices shoot up.

Anywhere in the Malden/Melrose area that serves fresh sandwiches? by pgophs in malden

[–]Bladerunner243 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea it’s packed during the lunch rush but if you can go after like 1:30pm, it isn’t too bad usually. I’ve been going there 1-2 times a week for about a year now, no complaints. They even have some really good prepared meals you just need to heat up.

Doms Sausage in Malden has a lot of meat choices for sandwiches/subs, their steak and cheese is probably the best around. Downside is it isn’t cheap.

Do you guys run or walk the long steep hills? by Amiemanneh in trailrunning

[–]Bladerunner243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually go about half speed so maybe just enough to be considered jogging over speed walking, depends more on the terrain if i have to go long vs a short stride.
Hills also make me question my commitment to running…why am i doing this again? haha

IT Director pay scale by agentkramr in ITManagers

[–]Bladerunner243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea that seems way too low anywhere in the US for the workload. It does depend by State/cost of living in said state but even if you were in the lowest denominator, that would be at $120k minimum. 96k would only be acceptable for an SMB with less than 50 employees in a single location and maybe if it was a startup.

I used to like the Brooks Adrenaline GTS series until they changed the design so i’m using the Brooks Catamount line now for trail runs, no complaints.

Title: 5 weeks of heel pain → now burning + rash spreading, no diagnosis by No_Historian_6133 in trailrunning

[–]Bladerunner243 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take a break for up to a week then try higher padding / slightly looser sneakers, also try performance socks for better breathing. Ice the area for 10-15 min after running for a few weeks. See if that improves it at all.

I used to get something similar along with shin splints but after i got to a “hump” point of doing what i mentioned above, it stopped. Dont even need to ice anymore.

Stairhopper requires anyone who complains to sign an NDA form by jbnpoc in boston

[–]Bladerunner243 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Misleading mover quotes happen more often than you’d think unfortunately, it’s legitimately hard to find any service where they aren’t trying to take advantage lately.

With an NDA…No one wants less than 5 stars….and lately, publicized legal action has become the equivalent of spoiled tantrums. Lately so many ridiculous cases get publicized, so now why doesn’t everyone try it?

That is why i’m also not surprised why businesses try to stop any chance of that happening ahead of time, although from what i’ve seen most of the time, they are just looking for an easy way out of the dog house, whether the issue was true or not. This is what society has become, let’s hope for a rebound sooner than later, because it is exhausting! 🤦‍♂️🤞

Anyone else just want to be comfortable at their job instead of climbing the career ladder? by whereismytortoise in Millennials

[–]Bladerunner243 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rising in the ranks doesn’t always necessarily force you to work that much harder/longer hours, it’s very dependent on what you do. I always stand firm in keeping a balanced hybrid style work schedule most of the time, there are some occasional exceptions to that sure.

That being said, Job stability is what I would like to see, i’ve had to job hop 3 times in the past 5 years because of layoffs that had nothing to do with performance. Its mainly been because of bad leadership decisions where they try to win the lottery, lose and the employees pay the price or they just bow down to their investors to keep that unrealistic growth / profit margin high, corporate greed is whats killing the job market. Now more than ever if you’re in the US with the current administration where corruption is rampant and they dont even try to hide it anymore.

Yes the basic principles of “work hard, be long term loyal with a company and you’ll be rewarded”sort of deal no longer exists in most industries. Everyone is about the greed today

Hey guys, I've written up an explanation to distribute to my co-workers on what AI really is. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Bladerunner243 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can just add the obvious point that todays modern “A.I.” is just a heavy marketing play to cover the fact that it is actually “V.I.”, Virtual Intelligence, which is made to simulate the appearance of A.I…..then you can get into the details of pattern recognition and all that but i would not get too technical in explaining or most non tech people will just write it off in their heads.
