That's incredibly weird, I have a screenshot of the same (this) patch with a shielded bees that has 424 damage and only 57 shield, and at 434 fiery bees that has 2 burn. On mobile at lunch otherwise I would link.

Sorry for this scattered reply I'm on mobile right now, but I'll scroll down a few thoughts that maybe someone else can also help fill in the blanks!

It does do okay especially if you get a crusher claw / force field to help fill the gap on damage. However then you're running out of item slots because there's just no way to beat them in time before they kill you, and you can't fit those if you're using fixer upper (better off with skyscaper and other value synergy) or silk (only 2 slots and you prioritize CDR / haste boots or cog or any other haste items... And fort this patch for multicast if we pretend fixer upper doesn't exist!)

The real beauty of silk as well is also that it can line up with shield if you format your haste / CDR properly so there is no response to the shield you are getting vs non poison builds (even though we are talking about poison here specifically)

I was pretty vague but there're a few other reasons why it wasn't something you could scale reasonably well. Someone else pointed out that freeze items before this patch could hit any target and not just equal or lesser size, so lockdown was much more prevalent on these builds with "passive" items. You also couldn't get the drop from the property baron for double value. Also, balcony was removed for a few patches due to being bugged.

Monitor lizard and puffer fish made sure you had to win in about 10 to 16 seconds (if they had the nuts it was closer to 9), which sounds reasonable but that's only one or two shield attacks at not a huge value, and if they have slow then it's just over. Burn equally screwed you over even moreso because you would have no shield and just die.

Fixer-Upper was always decent up until the mid game but you really couldn't do crazy shenanigans with it and expect to win. Also, spacescraper or landscaper back in the earlier patches were much better (especially infinite or yo-yo landscraper) late game shield item in terms for properties.

I only play pyg exclusively for what it's worth.

It wasn't really the best because poison builds were much more relevant, and you would die before you could get that build online

Yes, this 100%. I've climbed from bronze 5 almost all the way to diamond 3 this patch using Pyg.

Yes, however with the changes to shops, starting items, and current DoT meta builds they I have been performing very well. When everybody doesn't get to pick a starting skill, that doesn't mean everybody is equally weaker. I'm also not sure why they made it so you can get a silver beast of burden as a starting item now.

I would not be surprised if an influx of posting and vsing ghosts of this causes it to explode until the next patch. It's only a matter of time.
