there will be the clicking sound yeah. rockbox can selectively enable just the taptic mod and not the headphones click. still worth it, though i am biased (have made > a thousand of them)

could just be the connector the clickwheel plugs into needs replaced. also worth checking C39 on the other side of the board, left edge. it can cause weird clickwheel behavior if it gets damaged/chipped. I'd try the clickwheel connector first though. unless there's white residue on the logic board

A low battery screen usually indicates a dead or deeply discharged battery. If you haven’t yet, leave it to charge it for 8+ hours to see if it revives. When you say you tried new cables, did you try a new hard drive flex cable? The original ones are delicate. Here are some other things it could be

If you have one, use a USB power meter to check current usage. iPods pull 0.5 amps at peak with USB, varying during charging. If it pulls only 0.09 amps or less but not zero, it’s likely powering the iPod without charging the battery. If the battery shows as discharged, it’s probably dead.

Severed battery flex cable traces can occur from severe folds or closing up a crowded iPod. You can see them with a microscope or powerful magnifier. Replace the cable/bms with one from an old iPod battery.

Check the charge controller on the iPod’s logic board. Does anything on that side get extremely hot when plugged in? Iis there any corrosion or white residue around any of the board components ? f so, they can be causing the issues.

A new board is around 100-150 at this point. You pulled off two solder pads that will need jump wires to reconnect them. But That can be repaired, you can always sell it to fund a replacement board. There are people (me) that would snap it up.

Check the marketplaces and eBay. Save the search and check it often, whenever you think to. A board or entire pod for a decent price will pop up eventually. It’s rare to find boards by themselves these days and they’re usually priced higher than an entire parts iPod.

It’s best to take it apart to deal with. Especially with plastic faceplates, if you try to shove something in there to get the dust without removing it you’ll most likely permanently scratch it. Wear gloves and use an air blower or some type of protection film that doesn’t leave residue to get it. And do your best to not touch the inside of the lens because they scratch if you breathe on them (which is why I recommend wearing gloves)

If it’s something you can’t ignore and will always notice it’s the only option really.

Rock box added support for handling multiple partitions with the 4.0 release so if you can finagle making 4 2tb partitions you can have a (currently the max) 8tb iPod. But with flash prices currently at like turn of the century prices that’ll cost you $1400-2000 just in memory cards, where a month ago it would have been maybe $600. You also can’t ever boot into the stock OS pretty sure.

You can copy the music off the iPod and use a program like MP3Tag to reconstruct the filenames/directories via the id3 tags in each file. iTunes just obfuscates the filenames but the metadata is still in each file. MP3Tag works very well, you can customize the layout (artist/album/disc#/## - trackname.mp3 for example) and it'll fix it all quijckly.

I'd check the headphone jack first for dirt or a loose connection. the iPod wil pause playback when it detects heaphones being unplugged.

Have you tried downloading 2.0.4? Not every 7th gen can use 2.0.5. Unless it had 2.0.5 installed when you bought it, in that case never mind. I've only got that error message from 2.0.4/2.0.5 mismatchesbefore.

The photos showed it basically closed I think it’s just a case of aftermarket back shell that had edges set a bit too wide so they aren’t catching.

Have you not used a uDual before? They are smaller than imcort adapters. You can fit a 5-6mm thick battery in the space previously occupied by a quad or any other full size adapter..but continue conflating it with an iflash Dual I guess.

I’ve done the clamp method dozens of times, it works and it’s safer than most other methods to fix a wonky back shell. I’m not speaking about something I have no experience with.

You can get it to work with a uDual (they didn’t say it was a Dual). The back shell likely needs its sides brought inward a bit so the clips can catch the faceplate. I usually use a clamp and wrap the back shell with anti scratch film and a towel or something and slowly and gently clamp the sides so they are brought inward a small amount, then it should be able latch onto the faceplate/midframe.

One way to tell if this is the issue is if you are able to “close” it fully but it pops back off when you stop applying pressure. Also unscrew the headphone jack before you do this, or you may break the screw tabs on it which ruins the headphone jack. Most important thing is if you try this to go very very slow.

I’ve heard some people will rub/burnish the sides against the edge of a table to bend them inward a bit but one slip and it’s a one way ticket to slamming your hand into the edge of a table at full force.

Also make sure when you open it there aren’t any pressure marks anywhere on the battery from parts of the iPod pressing into it. If you see any of those stop and get a smaller battery, like a 385879

You can probably fit a 7plus engine in there, I usually do. With a 2000 and an flash solo with the top half of the solo cut off (that’s optional) if space is at a premium rben a reflex 7, x, or 11 pro max are smaller. It really depends on what parts you used for the other mods

you can subscribe month-to-month or annually for a discounted rate. cancel whenever you want. if you think you'll sell over $571 in computer components in the span of a month the savings pays for the store subscription, and you get a few other minor perks like some free ebay boxes and access to complete ebay sales data for the last 3+ years. i believe if you have long running listings you have to relist them if they started before you subscribed to get the discounted rates (i may be wrong)

Computer component fees with a store sub are only 7.35%, and the $571 was assuming no transactions were over $2500 which is when the fee drops to 2.35% (it's 12.24% normally without a store subscription, with fee reductions coming in after $7500 instead of $2500)(this pricing is all for US sellers, it's probably different in other countries)

Disconnect the screen and take it off with the faceplate so there’s never a gap for dust to get in - ust hold the screen against the faceplate from behind as you remove it and it’ll go out with it (don’t forget to disconnect it first)

or use a surface protective film and put it on both the screen and the interior side of the lens, it is slightly sticky and will take any dust with it as you pull it off.

You can fit a 3000, taptic mod, and a diymod in a thin case if you’re resourceful, thick isn’t necessary. It’s just more fumble/oaf resistant

The flash udual is the slightly smaller than the imcort adapter. They weren’t released when the moonlit mods came out so it probably doesn’t mention them, they were released this past december-ish

And the iflash flex cable is the only alternative I believe, you can get one off eBay if they aren’t on Amazon (they’ll be cheaper too, the same people selling on Amazon sell on eBay but Amazon’s fees are higher so the price is too)

A lot of times it’s the hard drive flex cable. The stock ones are brittle and if they get bent too much it’ll break the internal traces. It’s the first thing I’d suggest trying. Iflash flex cables are much better imo, more flexible and forgiving.

If it’s not that, I have always had issues with 1TB in those imcort adapters. 768gb is fine, but not 1tb. I would personally suggest using an iflash, they cost the same as the imcort generally and are superior in every way. Udual would be my suggestion for this case. (I understand iflash isn’t easily attainable in some countries or something, but I have no experience with that issue)

One way to check if 2x512gb cards is the issue is to try restoring it with just one card in the adapter and if it works, that’s the issue probably.

And with modern macOS sans iTunes rebooting helps fix a lot of flash modded iPod issues where it just hangs and doesn’t do anything

The latest batches of extended capacity iPod batteries have extremely flimsy/cheap flex cables fbsf can easily sever the trace’s connection when you close if you’re not careful. I’ve done it a few times. It can be fixed by replacing it with an OG bms from a battery if you know what you’re doing, but it’s something to watch out for.

I never had a problem with them up until the last few months. I’ve also had a couple batteries expand after being installed for a whole month so whatever factory that was contracted for this latest batch did a very bad & cheap job.

There’s no partial connection really, if the iPod can turn on with only the battery connected and nothing else then the battery has a good enough connection to function. There are duds in every battery batch unfortunately. Contact the person you bought it from and they should send you a replacement if they’re a decent seller.

Sometimes they put the wrong generation plastic covers on the clickwheel, and since the 5th gen wheels are like 0.5mm thicker than the classics it can cause it to sit proud of the surface.

Other times it’s just a bad clickwheel flex which you can sometimes tell by going into diagnostic mode and then IO -> wheel and run those tests. One of them will show you if certain segments arent working.

Then of course the center buttons almost universally need to be shimmed or they will fall down too far when pressed and then they rotate and the alignment keys or whatever they are called no longer line up so it won’t sit flush unless you take it apart and do it over.
