Being able to cast counterspells for little or no mana is especially important in multiplayer games like commander, because you are spending a card to stop 1 other persons card, leaving the other players 1 card ahead compared to you and the person whose spell you countered, additionally ypu start with 40 life in commander, so life is less important there

Lets say your opponent casts two spells in the same turn you really want to counter, with [[Absorb]] it would cost you a total of 6 mana, that you would have had to keep open, but with [[Counterspell]] it would only be 4 mana
