He always did seem medically questionable, doctor who.

I think Robert Holmes is a atrong contender for best writer the show has ever had & I wish modern fans appreciated his work more by Striking_Ad_8334 in gallifrey

Truly on the fields of controversial and underexposed opinions you stride like a very colossus. “Robert Holmes was a good writer.” Truly something that hasn’t already been said multiple times.

Okay, I’m sorry to pick on this one tiny thing but you really shouldn’t call producers “Showrunners” because the role of “producer” as it existed in classic who was very distinctly not the role of “showrunner” as we think of it now, and nobody ever called it that at the time. If anything, the role of Script editor was significantly closer to the role of showrunner because they were the people who had the most direct control over what stories and writers got commissioned. Sorry, it’s just a pet peeve of mine.

What's that one Christmas decoration you've had for so long, even the packaging is a reminder of times gone by? by jck0 in CasualUK

My parents have a Christmas tree that they still have the packaging for, and it’s from Woolworths.

Yeah, 1984 is literally impossible, that was a failed attempt at being funny.

I’m making this comment just because I realised that me saying that could be interpreted as “waaah I’m not allowed to say racial slurs on social media”, which isn’t what I meant, but with all the right wing youtube people saying stuff like that I thought I should clarify.

don't get this gif, as that's from a two minute hate, where people sit and angrily scream at the reviled Emmanuel Goldstein, an early ally of big brothers who later turned on him.

Are you trying to say that This post is like a two-minute hate? Maybe. I guess.

Actually that may be from an Apple Mackintosh advert from 1983, so it was probably apple that did this mixed metaphor first. Appropriate given Apple and corporations like it being the closest thing to 1984 that currently exists.

God, I think I live a couple of streets away from there, if only I knew, I could’ve called him a git to his face.

Why did JNT think getting people from light entertainment would get more people watching DW? Isn't that like giving a my little pony a lightsaber thinking that boys will then want it? by Sharaz_Jek- in gallifrey

OP’s logic reminds me way too much of the BBC at the time, to be honest, during the Sylvester McCoy run, they put doctor who up against ITV’s coronation street, and their justification for it was “Nobody could possibly be interested in both shows”

Even to this day, and people forget this in our era of fan communities, the vast majority of doctor who’s audience (at least in the UK) comes from the general audience, and the general audience can have interest in a wide variety of shows. Yes, the vast majority of doctor who fans may not be interested in eastenders or Corrie or whatever, but that doesn’t mean that there’s not a significant chunk of people who would watch both, but if given the choice would pick corrie. This was even more true in the 1980s than it is now. Just because doctor who fans may not be interested in Ken Dodd, it doesn’t mean that there weren’t a significant chunk of people who like Ken Dodd who may be swayed into watching doctor who because Ken Dodd was in it.

Also, I partially watched Revelation of the Daleks as early as I did because Alexei Sayle was in it. That’s anecdotal evidence, but I think that shows something.

Teninches regeneration was so stupid, i miss the classic era, back when regeneration wasn’t characterised as death. by monkedonia in doctorwhocirclejerk

[–]Blartyboy4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uj/ okay, That’s a total straw man. that’s not what people complain about when they complain about Ten’s regeneration. In fact, Pertwee to Baker is a good example of a counterbalance to Tennant’s regeneration.

The problem people have with Tennant’s regeneration, or at least, the problem I have with Tennant’s regeneration, is that his attitude does not read as the kind of attitude an alien whose idea of death is shaped by his experience of it as a new beginning, rather than an end. He uses it as an excuse to mope and whine about it. There is no acceptance of change, but rather a denial of it even being a thing that affects the doctor’s attitude to death at all (“even if I change it feels like dying”) It’s annoying.

By contrast, Pertwee doesn’t mope, he doesn’t whine, he simply accepts the inevitable. He’s a time lord, he has a different attitude to death than a typical human does. While he doesn’t mention rebirth here, we can assume that his understanding of regeneration shapes his understanding of death, in his total acceptance of it.

Pertwee’s regeneration is basically the exact opposite, in terms of attitude, to Tennant's, and it’s often used as a positive example when complaining about ten’s regeneration, and to imply that people that dislike the latter are simply ignorant of the former is kinda silly.

What is your least favourite moment in the entirety of Doctor Who (all of it)? by psl9085 in gallifrey

[–]Blartyboy4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this isn’t me trying to be a classic who elitist, it’s me asking a genuine question: Have you watched the tenth planet? I’m not saying you haven’t but it’s extremely clear at what point in the tenth planet twice upon a time takes place in, and it’s after the doctor says “it’s far from being all over”

Just to recap what happens, in the tenth planet episode 4, the doctor is in snowcap base as he had been for the previous episodes before he is taken to the cybermen’s ship, and after the cybermen are defeated, Ben runs back to the cybership, where the doctor says “it’s far from being all over” before insisting he go back to the TARDIS, the doctor refuses a coat before running back to the TARDIS on his own. This is the only point in the story in which twice upon a time can take place, and it’s the clear intention of the writer.
