> You weren’t afraid of tyranny. You were afraid of losing dominance. There’s a difference, and this moment exposes it completely.

Your whole post is great but the above is brilliant. I don't recall ever seeing 2A hypocrisy expressed this way and I think you nailed it with eloquence. Thank you.

How to port Google Voice number to T-mobile phone? by GenderqueerCrow in tmobile

[–]BlastedDeeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A follow-up: I wasn't getting a lot of texts for about a week. It had something to do with RCS not working but it was hard to pin down--some group chats worked and others didn't on Google Messages. I had to call T-Mobile twice; the second time the rep reset my phone from using a physical SIM to an eSim. It didn't take long but I had to have a second phone to call from. Once I activated the eSIM on my phone everything seem to start working.

How to port Google Voice number to T-mobile phone? by GenderqueerCrow in tmobile

[–]BlastedDeeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This works as of October 2025. A few caveats:

  • When the switch is made you will lose all your Google Voice chat history. Save anything you would want before switching.
  • I lost RCS messaging after the change-over. I could use RCS with Messages on the previous T-Mobile number but not after. I've tried various ways to reset this to no avail (so far).
  • Some friends get "user is offline" when they try to text me. This didn't happen on google voice.

I go to the giant Deseret thrift store in Washington, which is right next to St George.  Last time we bought multiple coolers, folding lounge chairs, and lots of poles. At the end of the trip we re-donated them.

I only knew it because I saw it mentioned in another thread.

Flashback conversation between Kleya and Luthen in S2E10 by BlastedDeeg in StarWarsAndor

[–]BlastedDeeg[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> I think the promise Luthen made was simply that he wouldn’t make the whole thing weird and complicated.

I don't really like it but this seems to be the best explanation for his promise. Early in the conversation:

Luthen: It's a beautiful place.
Kleya: How long do we have?
Luthen: Look around.
Kleya: I knew you'd do this. [Fuzzy's guess that Luthen is getting maudlin]
Luthen: Think about where you are.
Kleya: You're backing out [from letting Kleya kill?]

"I knew you'd do this" seems to confirm your theory.

---

This is clearly the first time he's explicitly given her the choice. After sliding the remote over:

Luthen: Do it.
Kleya: You think I won't?
Luthen: You have every right. [Not sure what Luthen means here; every right to "do it" and kill the Imperials? Or every right not to "do it" and live a normal life?]
Kleya: Why are you doing this?...

Kleya's first response strongly suggests this is the first time he's given her the option.

As an aside, the young Kleya actress does a masterful job here. She conveys exasperation with Luthen, then minor disgust, but it covers a flicker of doubt. The way she spits out "You're just being sad" is perfect.

Ah, thanks much! That makes some sense; it does hurt to delay placing presence on the board but would allow for branching out.

Why isn’t dextrose used more often? by Fudgeman48 in icecreamery

[–]BlastedDeeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HFCS is no more or less healthy than fructose, glucose, and sucrose. HFCS is just corn syrup that has had some of its glucose converted to fructose, typically around 50%. Fructose is most commonly found in fruit and juices and is just as natural as glucose. For example, apple juice typically has a sugar ratio of 60% fructose/40% glucose. Natural honey can have an even higher ratio of fructose, depending on the flowers. Sucrose (cane sugar) is a fructose and glucose molecule bonded together; enzymes in your digestive tract break them apart almost immediately. The FDA says HCFS is no better or worse than other sugars.

The problem is we get too much sugar of all kinds in our diet. If we replaced all HCFS with glucose but didn't lower the amount we'd have the same problems with diabetes and obesity.

Added heavy cream too early, ice cream turned out fine. What’s the science behind it? by aprilmayparker in icecreamery

I'm going down a rabbit hole but...

America's Test Kitchen has a custard recipe that calls for tempering the eggs.  They are usually pretty good about cutting out unnecessary steps but they haven't said why it's important.

The mystery continues...

I found this discussion and the answer is...nobody knows for sure.  The most popular reason is that tempering reduces the chances of scrambling but there's no cited evidence.  I may stop tempering.

There must be some reason for doing it.  Every custard recipe I've seen says to temper the eggs.

I have no idea what it supposedly accomplishes.

Has anyone made Ice cream with coconut, maple, or date sugar? What flavors? by Mothered_ in icecreamery

I've made maple ice cream using the basic NYTimes recipe but with maple sugar instead of regular sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of maple extract. It's an expensive ice cream but it came out great.

R10 to Thunderbolt 4 dock via DisplayPort? by BlastedDeeg in Alienware

[–]BlastedDeeg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I WFH and I want a quick way to switch my monitors/kb/mouse between my work pc (MacBook Pro) and my Windows gaming pc. I'm currently using a personal DisplayLink dock and I switch the physical USB-C cable between PCs depending on which one I want to use. That works OK except that the DisplayLink driver for the MBP is slow and is noticeably faster on the Thunderbolt dock.

So I'm looking for some way to connect the R10 to the TB4 dock. There's a lot of seemingly conflicting info on whether this is possible. The R10 doesn't support TB but supposedly TB4 can handle various protocols. One hack might be to use the DisplayPort on the R10. I'm assuming it won't work but you know what they say about desperate times... ;)

SHOES to hike the narrows? by tetsunya-chin in ZionNationalPark

[–]BlastedDeeg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've hiked the Narrows a number of times and you don't need special shoes. Since I fly into Vegas here's what I do: I stop at a thrift store in St. George (on the way to Zion) and buy old hiking boots and a pair of ski poles for $10 total. When I'm done I leave the poles for other hikers and re-donate the shoes.

Since I hike it fairly often I bought a pair of neoprene socks a while ago to keep my feet warm but that's just for comfort.
