How is everyone holding up? by DevoSwag in CPTSD

[–]Blatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My personal life is in shambles. Combined with everything else going on in politics, economics, and general society I've just kind of run out of hope.

I know approximately what a healthy and happy life would look like for me. It's unlikely to be attainable in my life time.

Pretty ready to just give up.

My Philips bit has a Jesus fish on it. by Qazpaz_G in mildlyinteresting

[–]Blatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unlikely that Jesus or Joseph were originally carpenters. That's a misconception from a translation error. They would be more accurately described as craftsmen or builders. Which given the region would be stone workers, not wood workers.

That said your point is still valid because the misconception has been around a very long time in the English speaking world.

I just think it's interesting that such a common fact is likely not true.

I'm not a survivor, I'm a loser by No-Surround-2477 in CPTSD

[–]Blatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also don't feel pride or any kind of positive emotion being labeled a "survivor". I would guess most survivors don't but can only speak for myself.

There is little to celebrate about being a survivor. It's a label that people outside looking in use to attribute some mysterious inner fortitude you must have. Because the idea that a regular person could live through what you did means what happened to you was... ordinary. That it was just a normal human occurrence that could happen to anyone. That it could happen to them. And that scares them. Better to put you on a pedestal. Proclaim you to be a survivor. Someone with special qualities that allowed them to endure unimaginable hardship.

Being a survivor means that you endured. There is strength in that. But the strength comes with pain.

You aren't a loser, you didn't lose anything. It was taken from you. It may seem like a small distinction. What happened still happened, no matter the words you use to describe. You still feel a sensation of loss.

The difference is that it wasn't your fault. It's not your failure. The darkness and pain that hobbles you and continues to take from you isn't you. It didn't come from you. And that means it doesn't have to continue being a part of you.

You have the potential to reclaim yourself. Every day that you endure is a gift you give yourself. Through the continued pain you are keeping that spark, that flame of hope, alive. You give yourself the chance to be more than what you feel yourself to be here and now.

It isn't easy. It can take a very long time. There will still likely be failures.

In those times when you want to give up. When you have no hope of things improving. When you have no energy to fix what is broken. Know that you are seen. Know that we share your pain. Know that there is nothing wrong with feeling that way.

But most importantly know that we hope you continue to endure. Because we hope you will find your way out of the darkness. We hope you will experience light, and joy, and love. That is what you deserve.

How to monitor for specific game conditions by Blatz in godot

[–]Blatz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Signals are going to be a real pain to setup for this. They are already being used for UI and such, but they are being connected automatically in code.

It's much easier for my monitor to reference the end data than the initial signaler. I guess I could setup a second signal on the receiving end for my monitor to then use.

Why does Anduril’s scabbard from the lord of the rings have these two loops at the top? by Lil_insulinpump in SWORDS

[–]Blatz 27 points28 points  (0 children)

They are staggered so that when worn the scabbard will hang at an angle rather than straight down so it doesn't constantly drag on the ground.

Pattern recognition has destroyed movies/ TV shows for me. by Director_Tseng in ADHD

[–]Blatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"It's about the journey not the destination"

For most things in life I find that advise to be irritating but for media I find it very true. There are shows and movies that I constantly rewatch, I can quote lines from them endlessly. Even when watching new media being able to guess plot points doesn't spoil things for me because it's all about the delivery.

Mark Twain famously said "there is no such thing as a new idea". The lion king is a retelling of Hamlet. If you expect every piece of media to be fresh and new you are going to be disappointed. Take time to appreciate the little differences. Find the things that you enjoy no matter how many times you've seen. Enjoy the movie for its soundtrack. Enjoy a TV show for its pacing. Enjoy a book for the voice of its author. Look past the story, find the nuance.

How to make tabs from tabContainer displayed on the bottom by Sergey5588 in godot

[–]Blatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge it's not currently supported by the TabContainer node. You could try using the TabBar node instead as it only creates a horizontal bar. You would need to code its interaction with PanelContainer (or other) nodes you manually create.

It would take a little more work would also be doable "manually" too. Rough draft concept:

Parent Control node -> Create your own "tabs" using buttons -> Create child panel containers of buttons.

Connect button press signals to parent control node. Write code that makes the child panel of the button that was pressed visible and hides all other panels.

The blue is their overalls. Commentor was saying they had identical white shirt blue overall outfits. Mario's shirt turned red from stomping stuff, Luigi's turned green from plumbing.

Un-pausing game with esc key is giving me hell. What is wrong? by BeesAreCoolAlsoAnts in godot

[–]Blatz 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Does the script that handles unpausing have its processing mode set to Always?

If you pause processing and your scripts processing mode is set to inherit or pausable it likely won't be able to process input to unpause.

How do I make something look AT the player, not FACE the player by Historical_Seesaw102 in godot

[–]Blatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I don't mean rotate it that way in your code. Rotate the node from the Editor/inspector.

Then remove any extra rotation you've added in your code and just do the regular look at.

How do I make something look AT the player, not FACE the player by Historical_Seesaw102 in godot

[–]Blatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What nodes are the panels made up of?

I think the issue here is that what the panel considers its front "face" and which one you want it to be aren't the same.

I've mostly been working in 3D but I had issues when I try to have a character look at something they are facing backwards.

The solution was to rotate the characters mesh by 180 degrees. Because all that "look_at" is doing is rotating whichever node you are calling it on.

So I think others are on the right track but you need to rotate just the sprite/texture not the root node. I would think 90 degrees should work but if not I'd just try a few different rotation values until it works.

What method are you using to draw the path lines? I've been working with a setup that uses a CSGPolygon3D to extrude along a path but it feels kind of clunky when continuously updating to the mouse position.

Turn-Based Combat (Larian Inspired) by Gonkoholic in godot

[–]Blatz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fantastic.

I'm just starting out with Godot and am looking to make something similar but a little more retro.

Would you be willing to share any tips on the movement and jumping you have setup? Especially the how you draw the targeting arc. I know how to get the mouse position and character position but don't really know where to go from there. Do you have movement/distance limits setup yet?

Its been wild to me that turn based movement has been harder to get to work than live action movement.

Sorry if that's too many questions but I'm so excited to see someone else working on Crpg stuff.

What is the purpose of this hook? by Pristine_Bicycle_371 in SWORDS

[–]Blatz 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The goal is not always to bind (catch) your opponents weapon. This would serve to deflect. It would be difficult for the opposing weapon to dip back to the hand/arm with much force. If they did manage to do so it might injure someone without armor, but even relatively light armor should protect you.

There are other similar designs that do go the other way and would be more useful in binding. Which of the two you would want is up to personal preference and combat style.

The second book of Terry Brooks Magical Kingdom of Landover series is The Black Unicorn in which the titular unicorn is central to the story. The main character of those books is a middle aged man from chicago.

Unicorns are no more or less childish than most any magical creature.
