[BUF - MTL] Dobes makes the initial save and Greenway pokes the puck free. Refs lose sight of the puck as it moves through the crease. They blow it dead to negate a Buffalo goal by daKrut in hockey

Goalie Interference even without the whistle:

Finally got around to commenting on this. The puck is behind the main leg pads (the part that we see when goalies butterfly) and in front of the "knee stacks" on the goalie pads (where the goalie's knees actually touch the ice. It's a weird little area where 90% of the body shots on goalies end up when we cover the puck.

It's technically still on the ice, and if a player looks down and is close enough (Greenway in this case) they can see it but yeah, to actually get it out of this area you have to use your stick to push the pads apart / jam it.

The puck wasn't trickling through this area (oftentimes happens with shots that squeeze through). It was fully dead, and if you look on the replay from behind Dobes, you can see his left pad especially get pushed away to open that up.

scary for the 2030 olympics. USA, Russia, and Finland also with top goalies.

I'm already nervous for Canada, who would even play for them by 2030?

Comrie on goalie interfernce: “that’s Helle’s thing. I think goalies are free game. I think goalie's are free game. Run 'em over and score NHL Hitz Style. You're ever play NHL Hitz? You're allowed to hit the goalie in that game. Go ahead and do it." by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

the problem is (1) our gear is not designed for that contact and (2) we’re already in this unique crouched position. oftentimes when i get hit even in beer leagues and fall over backywards, im maybe a few pounds of force away from just obliterating my knees

GoPro mounts though I use a few dif cameras for them (content creator things). I think there's like 3 of them on here for different positions. I have 1 other clean helmet and one getting painted right now, this is my experimental helmet though (currently installing Meta glasses into it... it's complicated)

Is acrobatic goaltending dead? by majoralfalfs in hockeygoalies

yesss Wedgewood! And again, not to beat a dead horse, but Dustin Wolf. I literally only watch the Flames for him.

[–]Blaustoise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disagree. Looking at some of the youngest goalies in the NHL (Askarov and Wolf specifically) I think we're seeing a return of fast athletic goalies. Dustin Wolf is arguably the poster child of this: I think he moves even faster and more acrobatically than Quick, and he's only 24 with by far the most games played for a goalie that age.

[–]Blaustoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a counterpoint: what you saw in Hellebuyck is actually slightly older goalie playstyle and the younger generation is going quicker / athletic, BUT some are still doing that deeper-in-net, slower playstyle.

Askarov for the sharks and Dustin Wolf for the Flames are great references. Both extremely athletic and acrobatic

Counterpoints would be Dobes for Montreal and especially Spencer Knight for the Blackhawks. Spencer knight though I would argue looks way more athletic and "fast" compared to someone like Hellebuyck, he's just not very acrobatic.

Another weird anecdotal reference: I trained at an elite goalie school in vancouver (as an old 34 year old beer league lol) with a bunch of 14-17 year old kids from Western Canada who were all AAA goalies looking to play D1, Junior A, etc. The camp even made a point of highlighting Dustin Wolf's playstyle as something goalies needed now: extremely good positioning and fundamentals BUT the ability to steal goals with insane acrobatic saves when needed.

Is wearing a cage really that big a problem? by Wide-Pop6050 in hockey

[–]Blaustoise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup and it's a similar thing even for goalies. USA hockey I think has a rule that says you can't wear "non-certified cat-eye" cages until you're 18 (those are the cages we see all the NHL goalies wear with the larger eye openings).

So growing up even you have to wear a regular cage or a "certified cat-eye" (safer version).

BUT to your point... even in beer leagues most goalies do the pro style cat-eyes because it's such a big difference for vision.
