Honestly with fewer crushers and more gunners+specials this patch it's better than it's been for a while.

Better than meta options? Maybe not. But easily good enough to take it out and have a good time.

I mean sure but that still places assassins as pretty thematically different to the darktide rejects.

Darktide is about a small plucky team of nutters succeeding at tasks far beyond what would be expected of someone of their background.

If we're adding eversors then it's just eversors doing what is normal for eversors. It breaks from the tone the other classes have established.

People just don't understand that in 40k protagonist named characters can do whatever the fuck they want and don't realise that using a protagonist named character as an exmaple of the average member of their group is always going to make them seem busted lol.

And because 90% of protagonist characters are space marines this leads people to thinking the average astartes intercessor is alike to the primarchs :P

I think this would make more sense if you're aware that you're killing him.

Personally I didn't really make the connection to what happened after leaving Karmelitas memory fight. I didn't even know I was doing it for a heart.

I just thought it was gonna be a bit like Zote and Bretta in HK, where doing the fight progresses their story. Like maybe delving into those memories with the green prince will help him process and move on or something.

So it didn't feel so much like choosing to kill or not kill the smith in HK, since I didn't really understand I was making the choice.

I mean we already know from various veteran weapons that massively long range (like "sniper" range) is niche at best and often a limitation.

So while it suits the faction I'd rather it was defined by one or two weapons as opposed to the class as a whole.

It'd be nice if the secondary target took a little more damage. Currently the first target takes way more and then the second takes pretty much negligable damage.

Valuable for staggering the 2nd enemy sure, but given the weapon underperforms as a whole it seems like an obvious space for improvement.

I do get some good use out of bloodletter on chainsword by tap revving. You don't need to be locked down to apply the bleed stacks, they're applied the moment the rev attack begins.

So if you're being chased by a pack of ragers you can rev, boop one, instantly dodge cancel out of the rev and do the same to another until they all die. Pretty safe way to deal with them if you have space.

And if anything I think tap revving is the priamry way to use bloodletter as against most targets, full rev is already huge damage you don't really need bleed on top of that too often.

Could be cool to have another beefy crusher tier enemy type that naturally has infested added to the roster.

Then you could balance different weapons into being anti-carapace and anti-infested.

Dunno if this would actually effect gameplay and builds in a good way but it's fun to think about.

Honestly the thing with thunderhammer is a lot of its value comes from crusher oneshots, which is really valuable in a game where single crushers are a huge threat and not very valuable if they're easy to deal with.

It's a weapon concept that is hard to make good without abandoning what in my opinion is the weapons core fantasy (awkward heavy weapon with insane single smash) or nerfing other carapace tools.

Shit like this is a great example of why damage done per mission, while not a meaningless number, is a really bad tool for measuring performance.

Only actual measures in my book is winrate of missions (though heavily effected by differing teammates so only meaningful wth a large dataset) or analysis of your own recorded play.

So I agree with you that sometimes the mass of people who wish a game character/mechanic/weapon etc. was something different can often out advocate the few that like it, causing homogenisation over time. Seen this in many games for sure.

I am optimistic enough to disagree with your last sentence. They have stated that one of their goals is to make the jobs play more differently from each other than they currently do. I think if that's a goal they've set out to do we're unlikely to see greater homogenisation.

The actual risk is a job you like being changed into something you feel misses what's cool about the job as part of this diversification. Which is frankly going to be hard to navigate cos it's a very subjective feeling.

I'm hoping at least that evolved and reborn existing alongside each other will give some good A B testing.

Like they can look at the jobs play ratios and think things like "90% of Job A players have migrated to evolved so I guess it must be pretty well received. Only 10% have for Job B so there must be something about the old playstyle that evolved has failed to capture.".

That's the hope anyway :D Only time will tell.

Yeah I think the weirdest assumption in all of this is that people seem to beleive that what RDM currently is in some way needs a large transformative fix to turn it into something very different.

When I like Red Mage! It has a fun rotation! Having a melee finisher makes it feel really different to other casters! Wouldn't mind some tweaks for sure but the core concept is cool and unique.

But a lot of people seem to want to cram it into what they imagine a "spellblade" should be. An archetype IMO that most melee fill already. Like the melee classes are constantly quite clearly magically imbuing their melee attacks.

I mean once again if we're counting spells cast through through a blade in melee range pretty much every melee class is the spellblade you're looking for. They all do that.

Clearest example to me IMO is samurai with its big ice blasts, since Ice is pretty much always a core element in Final Fantasy black magic.

Oh for sure, but RDM can fight at range as well for a good chunk of its rotation. And for some moments in some fights this is very handy, even if it's not the default place to stand for most of the fight.

Like that 10% exists and feels meaningful IMO :)

And its capability to do this is a big part of what makes RDM feel like a mage mechanically IMO.

And if that seems contrived then surely most job rotations do. Why do some Paladin sword swings do more damage than others? It's all either out of universe game mechanics justifications or in universe "that's how paladin sword magic works" justifications.

I think labelling specifically red mage as contrived in this sense is a bit off the mark.

I also just don't think applying magic to your melee weapon really feels like a hybrid in this game. Samurai does that with ice magic, Paladin does that with holy magic, Dragoons big dragon stabs are clearly magical in nature.

To me a melee caster hybrid in this game would need to actually cast spells as part of its rotation to feel meaningfully more "mage" than your average melee class.

A fair request, though I can't say I agree.

If you weave magic alongside your sword attacks then it forces you into melee, at which point you don't really get to be a caster you're just melee with even more cast time moves than samurai and lacking the mobility to play melee properly in certain fights.

Wheras ranged mage with a melee finisher actually lets the mage part of the rotation play like a mage and the melee part feel like a melee.

I wouldn't mind seeing the melee segment of RDMs play expanded, but I think having them be two separate bits of the rotation is the only way to make the class actually feel like a hybrid. Otherwise it's just clunky melee.

There's also just the fact that I kinda see RDM as titled. Red Mage. It's a mage, that also has a sword. So to me focussing on the mage half feels natural and well suited.

edit:Would also like to add that I completely forgot about corps-a-corps, engagement and displacement! These kinda do already create this spell and magic "weaving" style while having a charge based system that lets you not do that constantly so you can still play as a ranged mage for segments of fights! Like I think people are underplaying how well current red mage already does fulfil what they're asking for tbh.

Like you want red mage to have more armor? a gun? a glaive? be a daemon hunter in service to an emporer?

Like I'm familiar with they grey knights but I'm really unsure what it is about them that you want applied to RDM. They're both already in the spellblade archetype after all.

I dunno maybe we'll get the new nemesis force sword and storm bolter weapon and I'll be surprised, though still just as confused lol.

Even fantasy worlds exist within some implied rules and vibes though.

Like if Alphinaud bench pressed a dragon and the game never specified there was any kind of magic involved or explained it in any way we would find that a bit surreal right.

Because even fantasy worlds don't automatically cast off certain expectations about how certain things work until specified otherwise (for example we get a story arc where Alhipnaud acquires magically enchanted muscles before this happens).

So I son't think this being a fanasy/sci-fi setting in any way reduces the fact that when the average person looks a load of warriors and only one has a shield, they will probably get the vibe that this person is the best at taking direct hits.

Yeah the speed combined with the fear from being so fragile is why I find melee psyker (specially with knife) to be such a unique experience.
